I wanted to say THIS VIDEO really recall me how much I love music at the very beginning ! Yes its not music video nor a singing contest but exactly this kind of video where the coach interpret in a professional way dissect into music singing skill Labrador and whatsoever , this is excited me and remind me I love singing I love music in the young days. OMG I’m gonna cry.😂 this is my passion You know this is very professional if you are really into music / singing , this is informative this is interesting oh this can be learning like this or like that , this is knowledge. Interpreting from HK singer (I’m Malaysian) , Jay Fung , to MC , to Jay Chou , I know all of them . Talking from a westernise or we called them ABC , Jay Fung who I know him started in Chinese Idol , to MC Cheung who I knew him lately a new generation talented young guy who make it to his first official big concert by only within his first two year since debuted, a gen Z talented singer who intrigued me lately , to the Jay Chou , I meant my generation , talking about how his vocal doesn’t sounds the standard Chinese vocal interpretation where usually u don’t understand a word from his song , how he is being criticised in the beginning of his career until he make it big . This is all , I meant this talk is all what’s about and interesting and what’s really excite me - Music . Sing . So so much thanks for the video u made and especially I realize I like the conversation between the vocal coach woman and the other 2 off screen , I find it rather boring when some of the video recorded by the vocal coach alone in the video . The conversation between u guys are the most exciting part discussing / fighting each other opinions on a song / singer .im gonna cry again 😂😂😂

I've been saying in other video. JayChou is truly something. When he first debut he was heavily criticised for his mumbling singing. So much so, I kid you not, some reviews gave him something like a 2/10 kind of score, and said they were shock how bad his singing is. He was really ahead of his time, but his songs were cool especially the earlier albums, so people, younger people didn't really mind. Also people start saying after the fact that maybe it was a good thing to mumble because it forces the listeners to read his lyrics. But with regards to rosette talking about the vowels, it's still not exactly the same, I think to her, it sounds better if the vowel is more open. The example JKai give on the pronunciation of the word of southern or something accent, is a gross exaggeration, not of the accent but I mean in terms of picking the accent that differs a lot than jaychou. Jaychou is Taiwanese, they are in general more soft in compared to what people usually have an idea of how mainlander accent is, but jay chou took it a step further. But honestly to me, the way jaychou sort of mumble, to me was felt like it was trying to be cool, because his whole image at the beginning was kind of shy and almost mysterious cool guy and it kind of fit that image that he has. But the way rosette said what she would like to hear from Chinese songs, I think is more about what she's accustomed to. JayChou's singing fit his laid back mixed rnb style, but when he sings more Chinese style or does cover he enunciate and pronounce the words a lot clearer. Also similarly to the way she says vocal technique are tools, the reason JayChou gets away with it is because he can sing normally and pronounce his words clearly but choose not to, its artistic decision. A western singer singing mandarin songs, not pronouncing the words clearly, might sound more comfortable to her ears, but it just sounds like someone who doesn't know what the words to the lyrics are. But I have to say, it's true about the singing along part, I think part of why Jaychou was so popular is because his lyrics are easy to sing along to. I mean we don't know the words to it without reading the lyrics, but we can sort of mumble and sing a long, and it still would've been enjoyable. Ive mentioned this in other videos, if the singer sings clearly and you dont quite catch what they're singing and try to sing along, its not as satisfying when you know clearly youre singing the wrong word, but with jay chou song, it can feel like youre doing it when your really not, you just have to catch the certain inflection of words that are more pronounced. I honestly have never had a similar experience with any other songs of any other language. Although I have to mention, the part where she talks about English singers, changing some of the vowel like the "e" in "me", Chinese singers also do that, but also to the extent that they know the listener would understand it still. Like the word "shuo" can become more "shuoa" so it ends with a more open vowel etc. But it's not really for a lot of words, because ultimately its the same everywhere, you want to hear what they are singing, for most type of songs. I doubt there's a pop song in the west where the pronunciation are as mumbled in English as jaychou is in mandarin.

Appreciate the analysis and really learned so much from a professional perspective in terms of vocal techniques. But regarding to the final part of the video, as a Cantonese native speaker, my question would be, is it necessary to sing a song "as close to English as you can not speaking English?" And does it have to let "English ear can wrap itself around"? As mentioned in other comments, Cantonese language itself has its restrictions when it comes to being less "choppy". By making it "smoother" it's actually minimising the characteristics and it can change the words into a completely different meaning. And making it smoother or not in this context is rather an artistic choice than technique or not. From a cultural perspective, I would question, shouldn't we have the confidence in keeping our language characteristics? I think it's crucial to remember that music should have the rooms of being interpreted differently based on different cultures and languages. It would be more fair and healthy to just simply think that we develop different preferences based on the languages we speak and the culture we grew up in. I would not expect a musical vocalist to sing like Jay Chou because there is a purpose for singing words clearly in such context. And in Cantonese culture as well as the language, it is crucial to hear the lyrics word by word because our culture pays more attention into the depth of the literature than the tune itself. (Though I personally think both are equally important). From a storytelling perspective, it's easier for people to understand what the song is about when words are clearly pronounced. I hope the above explanation helps you understand more of the language and the reasons why Hins' interpretation was more "choppy". A little side note, as Hins was from Guangzhou, his preference on the pronunciation of Cantonese should be different based on the regional difference as well. Anyway, thanks so much for choosing Hong Kong singers as your examples. Appreciate that!

廣東話太多字係p、t、k尾,香港聽眾不接受歌手唱歌時有懶音,所以出唔到周杰倫這類歌手,將歌詞融入曲中時,讓聽感行先。 香港聽眾很着重歌詞意思和韻腳,也出咗不少優秀填詞人,歌手需要咬字咬得緊先令聽眾清楚了解詞意,令首歌聽感變得choppy 😅

I speak all 3 languages (English, Mandarin and Cantonese) and I totally agree that a huge part of it is the language itself. My mother tongue is Cantonese and from a Cantonese perspective, even Mandarin can be quite flexible and smooth, and English is just way way different. The problem with Cantonese is that on top of our tones, our words sometimes have hard stops at the end like K, T, P sounds. If you drop any of them, you lose or change the meaning entirely and it won't even be considered Cantonese.

That girl is not right. MC is not from Canada. In MC’s interview with Stephen Chan Chi Wan, he said that he was mistreated, if not bullied, by some English speaking Chinese Canadians because he could not speak English when he immigrated to Canada with his now deceased father. Cantonese is his first language, he is able to read and write Chinese. On the other hand, English is by far Jay Fung’s first language; he received all of his education in Canada. He is not westernized but a real westerner with a Chinese face. He spoke choppy Cantonese when he first came to Hong Kong. I bet he thinks in English. Of course MC cannot match his agility or fluency in English. For me, I prefer MC because I prefer power and emotion over agility. You bet you I prefer Jenny Tseng over Teresa Tang.

Back in the days when Jay Chou released his first album in Taiwan, he still got a lot of criticizes saying that he sings with a egg in his mouth and no one would understand what he sing. Even the way we speak Mandarin in Taiwan is already much softer and much less curly tongue than the Mandarin spoken in Mainland China still Jay's style can't be accepted by the main stream pop musicians in Taiwan who insist singers have to sing each word clearly. However, the rise of Jay Chou changed the trend totally just like what Stephen Curry do in basketball world.

Why put so much emphasis into comparing Jay Fung and Jay Chou? Why's that even important? And the guy sound sooo offended when Rozette said she liked Jay Fung more. I mean can't someone like JF more? :/

Cantonese words mostly end with "n" or "ng" sound. Maybe that's why it sounds "deng deng deng deng" (choppy)

Actually, it is just a matter of personal preference. If a singer wants to sing a Mandarin/Cantonese song like singing in Western Style, just go ahead. Otherwise, sticks with the culture.
