As most Filipino singers are. Starting at an early age, Filipino training consist only of copying the original singers to the dot, and as they progress they developed their own style.

Coaching is expensive since the old days, most filipinos would rather learn by heart to themselves than pay to learn. And one of those singing school in ph is "center for pop".

C B I can believe that. Also I think it’s better that they are self-taught, if they were given professional singing lessons, they probably would be constricted to learn it in certain ways. Like Katrina, if she did have lessons she’d probably be a completely different singer! 🤷🏽‍♂️

Filipino singers are mostly self-taught because the training grounds for filipino singers are amateur singing contests. Katrina is an example of an amateur singing contest honed talent. She has joinef at least 300 singing contests in her younger years. Imagine competing to at least 3 singing competitions in a week. It's way better than formal training.

Wonderful commentaries! Considering that Katrina Velarde haven't had any formal training in singing (just pure talent), she really excels in it. I hope you check out her other One Take Covers. She just posted a new cover: Broken Vow. Before Katrina's rendition, I didn't like the song much. But when Katrina did it, she did it so beautifully that I now appreciate the song better.

Auto-tune makes all the same notes executed the same like all the A4s sound pretty much sound and feel the same. This means the artistry of the vocalist is undermined because without auto-tune the execution of the same note throughout the song (e.g. the same part of the chorus the second or third time around) allows for some slight variety rather creating uniformity. The saying goes: "perfection is the enemy of good". Some vocal imperfections are actually enhancing the artistry of the singer at least if delivered by a competent singer. Some producers even choose to leave them in the recording rather than do another take. Examples of this is David Bowie's "Let's Dance" (produced by Nile Rodgers) and Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood" (on the Robert Fripp album titled Exposure - produced by Robert Fripp). You can also hear an obvious intonation problem on a particular part of The Police's "Murder by Numbers" but it still sounds cool (produced by Hugh Padgham and The Police). In the ear of a highly artistic person a flaw can be a strength.
@seansanchez1140

No one use Auto-tune in the Philippines. You can't say you're a singer (in the Philippines) if you use auto-tune here.
@ThelSuperlKing
@ThelSuperlKing 5 жыл бұрын
You have to also note auto-tune is not only used only to correct pitchy notes but also it is used intentionally to create a synthetic artificial poppy sound prevalent in contemporary music even when the pitch of the singer is already great. Some people go for this sound and musical feel. It suits certain musical genres more than others though. Some young people are kinda addicted to this kinda music and sound.
@ellevanroamer487

I think the philosophical lecture on auto tuning implications of popular Western music is in the next video.
@ThelSuperlKing
@ThelSuperlKing 5 жыл бұрын
It is relevant because she brought up the point of using her own ear to judge and even at times correct pitch manually rather than simply use the software's judgement to correct pitch. A professional musician's ear is far more likely to be nuanced and artistic than a robot. She mentioned the robotic perfect sound created by auto-tune is not as intelligent or as good as the sound judged by the professional human ear which can manually adjust some minor flaws using Melodyne creating variety in the same executed notes. You can find this relevant part that I responded to at 12:00 onward particularly at 13:06. She actually did a little lecture once the song ended and I expanded by adding more points by focusing on the point some flaws are artistic flaws not ugly sounds to the ear. Lord GOD 1 Jhun Pangan 0! :P

She haven’t had a professional voice lesson except some coaching when she joined X-factor Philippines a few years ago from Garry Valenciano... she still gets help from him now and then but she’s mostly self taught... the competition stage was her teacher where she started performing on since the age of 6... she even stopped at grade 8 because can’t afford to quit competition which helped her help her family financially and financed her education... amateur singing competition is big business in the Philippines... one is being held somewhere everyday... Philippines is predominantly Catholic and each and every village or city celebrates a saints feast day... most held a competition to celebrate such feast day...😊 that’s one of the secret of how Philippines produce so many excellent vocal artist...😊 you can have voice lessons but they’re relatively very expensive...

I understand that you only started to react in her recently but the truth is half of what your saying about her voice is not true.. She can definitely slay a medley yet still performed amazingly and incredible without tiring or fatigue that you had spoken about. Try her Whitney Houston Medley. And btw, Katrina is a self taught and did not have any professional help on voice lesson. Thats why she is so talented and a gifted one..

Saying that Katrina is 'gifted' negates all the hard work she put in making herself one of the best in the world today. Whatever she has right now, is not a gift, she's one of the best because she works hard for it. At young age, Katrina spend sleepless nights practicing, improving and joining innumerable contests.
@cateson4508
@cateson4508 5 жыл бұрын
@@seansanchez1140 i included the "gifted one" because not all singers or how talented they might seem able to put it all even if it takes a years of experience or hardwork practices. I mean she started it as young as she is and as the "gifted" means it was having an exceptional talent and NATURAL ability. Most of us can sing but we dont have that "gifted" ability and by that means i was able to identified Ms. Katrina as a gifted one...

i think she meant in one song itself , when she takes little vocal breaks the energy is refilled .ofc she can do a medley . she can sing 15 songs in a row without a wrong note. i watched 400 videos of her and cant remember a single wrong note , and i never met a better singer , she also said that she would be already tired at this point singing like katrina and its only a slide. she still would sound amazing. . she rates this very good i think. for the first time and hopefully not the last . you cant expect she knows katskills by watching only 1 song while we watched 300 songs a hundred times. 😊 and when she says ....tired , its not meant katrina needs a nap now 😅 .

Very good vocal & recording analysis Coach...Rhap Salazar her friend helped her set up her home recording. It is very clever for Rhap Salazar to use this dynamic uni-directional wireless Sennheiser mic as it picks up sound unidirectionally upfront. If she were using a condenser recording mic (48Volts Phantom power), it will pick up all the sound 360deg., maybe the neighbors dog, or a passing car and it would be difficult to edit the noise and find the measure where the noise started and cut the waveform to delete the noise, and yes you are right, it can only be edited in its original recorded tracks. Once it is rendered to an MP3 or MP4, it is assumed that it is already clean and adjusted (reverb+delay, compression, noise reduction, panpot etc.) it cannot be edited anymore. The original recording tracks after cleaning up must be rendered into an mp3, mp4 or wav form to reduce the file size. The original tracks of a recording has a very, very large file size.... Here in her recording, it is still in its raw original track form except for the yellow coded track 1 stereo back up minus one music, track 2 coded red is her vocal track which can be quantized and tapered in its ending measures when it is rendered to mp3....Kudos to you coach and you have a very nice voice .

A lot of the things you're complimenting come from the Celine Dion version. Singing softly at the beginning. Straight tone followed by Vibrato… It's not hard if you've listen to the original over and over to do the same thing.

All her ad libs up until 6:15 we're from the Céline Dion version too. I'm not trashing her, I'm a fan. I'm just saying that I kind of wish she would be slightly more original on her covers sometimes. I know she's an impersonator, so it may be hard. I also think it's clear that up for someone who claimed to be a Céline Dion fan, you don't know her music at all, Freya. Lol.

I don't think she experienced fatigue in this song. She has sang more difficult songs and sang for a longer period of time.

Correction: Katrina hasn't had a formal training. She has been always joining competition everywhere in the Philippines when she's young. Fyi Philippines always have singing competition every occasion we have like "Fiesta".

You should react to Celine Dion singing "I Surrender" she is the original singer of the song after all. The Vegas performance of the song was awesome.
