Kevin has studied classical cello since he was 8. A true polymath, Kevin is also a skilled classical saxophonist who graduated from Yale University pre-med. When he was picked to be one of twelve Yale students to study in China the time there affect him so much that he changed his major to east Asian studies and extended his stay to a year and a half while learning to speak and read fluent Mandarin Chinese.

Yes he was classically trained. He's a grandmaster of 3 instruments. If memory serves, it's cello, piano, and sax. I believe he is now adept at 6 instruments total including voice. He also speaks several other languages fluently other than just Mandarin. I have believed for a long time that Kevin is absolutely the most multi-talented artist in PTX. He's also WAY too humble about it all. (in PTX's documentary "On My Way Home", Kevin stated that if he had the talent of the other 4 group members, he wouldn't have to practice. He implied that they don't need to practice because they're so talented but since he isn't, he does. But they practice ALL the time.
@RMoribayashi6 жыл бұрын
@@Anjalena Unusually, Kevin studied classical, not jazz or pop saxophone. Like the euphonium, another underappreciated member of the brass band, it's not found in the symphony orchestra. Because of this there are only a handful of solo, ensemble and concerto pieces for classical saxophone. The one instance online of Kevin playing sax is from 2007 with a 17 year old Kevin playing Rumba by Maurice Whitney (1949) with host Christopher O'Reilly on piano.
@Anjalena6 жыл бұрын
@@RMoribayashi I did not know any of that. Thank you. Very strange then that he would make that choice but he was young yes? Still, that makes him quite unique wouldn't you say? ☺️

So yeah, Kevin is a classically trained cellist, and a world class one at that (he was one of the principle cellists for the Yale Symphony Orchestra, and later went to Berklee), also plays just about every other instrument you can imagine, even saxophone, very well. But aside from music, he speaks multiple languages, including Spanish and Chinese (fluently), and finished pre-med at Yale. He is an absolute machine. He could barely even match a pitch (badly) when they formed pentatonix, it's been awesome to see how far he's come as a singer.

Yes! Kevin is classically trained on the Cello. you nailed it! 😂 He played Carnegie Hall when he was REALLY young. I'm thinking he might have been 10 years old. He also graduated from one of the Ivy League colleges I can't remember if it's Yale or Harvard. I think it's Yale. He was going to be a doctor like his dad is but he dropped out to audition with Pentatonix and ended up touching lives this way. He wanted to help people and he likes when he hears from fans and they talk about how much the music means to them how much their inspired and he said it makes him realize that he is helping people just not in the way he thought he was going to when he had planned to become a doctor. He is so musically skilled! He started taking voice lessons from one of the other group members long ago because he felt like he needed to pull his weight so to speak? Kind of like an obligation to be a contributing member or something. He was already crazy talented and a critical member of this group, they all are. I'm really glad you reacted to this! Kevin just now putting himself out there more as a vocalist and we love these projects he's been doing!

Tara, I don't know how many of these comments you read. I am a subscriber and thoroughly enjoy your informative reactions. I want to thank you because your reactions/explanations have helped me in my singing. I'm 68 and have loved singing all of my life. I actually won a talent competition similar to shows like Americas Got Talent way back in 1956 for singing and dancing on PBS in NYC. Many decades later I was part of a non-Catholic quartet that got to sing for a mass in St. Peter's Basilica for Pope John Paul II. I have lost my hearing in one ear so I don't sing in church any longer. My hearing the organ with people singing all around me gets muddled and I'm afraid of being off-key. So I sing for myself at least an hour every day; all genres of music except hip-hop and rap. Your comments about dropping your jaw and putting my tongue more forward has actually helped my range and clarity. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Sorry this is so long.
