Simply put, Marlena is the muse but she is not a woman, it refers to music. In the text "Marlena returns home" she talks about her difficulty in composing texts because she has lost her inspiration. In the song "L'altra dimensione" of the album "Teatro d'ira" Marlena is back and also with arrogance.

Italy has this name of having a really strong operatic tradition, and it is true of we look at XIX-early XX century Italy. It is not true anymore about Italy at least since the 1960's. No, current Italian music is not influenced at all by opera.

English translate: Tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline Coraline as beautiful as the sun Warrior with a zealous heart Hair like red roses Those precious copper-like wires, my love, take them to me If you hear the bella sing you’ll see Coraline crying She takes in the others’ pain and then carries it within her Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline But she knows the truth Not everyone can go on with their heart split in two It’s already cold She’s just a child but she feels like a burden and sooner or later she’ll break People will say: “she’s worth nothing She can’t even get out a miserable door” But one day, at least once, she’ll manage And I told Coraline that she can grow up Fetch her things and then leave But she detects a monster that keeps her in a cage, that covers her way with explosive mines And I told Coraline that she can grow up Fetch her things and then leave But Coraline doesn’t want to eat, no... yes, Coraline would like to disappear. And Coraline cries Coraline is anxious Coraline wants the sea but she’s afraid of the water And maybe sea is inside her And every word is an axe, a wound on the back Like a raft sailing on a swollen river And maybe the river is inside her, inside her I’ll be fire, I’ll be coldness A repair during the winter Whatever you breath I’ll understand what’s inside you I’ll be drinking water The meaning of goodness I’ll also be a soldier Or a light in the evening And I don’t ask for anything in return Just a smile Every little tear of yours is an ocean on my face And I don’t ask for anything in return Just some time I’ll be a banner, a shield, or your silver sword, and... And Coraline cries Coraline is anxious Coraline wants the sea but she’s afraid of the water And maybe sea is inside her And every word is an axe, a wound on the back Like a raft sailing on a swollen river And maybe the river is inside her, inside her And tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths Coraline, Coraline Coraline, as beautiful as the sun She lost the fruit of her womb She never knew love But a father that isn’t father-like at all Told her : “in the city there’s a castle with walls so strong that if you go live inside it nothing will ever hurt you again Nothing will ever hurt you again”

The singer always says that anyone can interpretate the lyrics as he likes the most, but I think that the more accepted interpretation is the following: "Marlena torna a casa" means "Marlena come back home". Marlena is a female name but in the lyrics of this song Marlrena represents their inspiration, thei muse that they need to go on with their art. The singer in invoking multiple times Marlena to come back home ("Quindi Marlena torna a casa, che il freddo qua si fa sentire"="So Marlena come back home 'cause is getting cold in here" "Quindi Marlena torna a casa, che non posso più aspettare"="So Marlena come back 'cause I can't wait anymore" "Quindi Marlena torna a casa, che il freddo qua si fa sentire"="So Marlena come back home that is getting cold in here" "Quindi Marlena torna a casa, che ho paura di sparire"="So Marlena come back 'cause I'm afraid to disappear" ). If you look at the official video of the song you can see that Marlena is represented as a hurt or ill woman who is not capable to come back home.

Nice analysis, as usual. Let my add something that's hard to notice for those who are not fluent in Italian. Damiano (generally speaking) adds unique rhythm to his delivery. For English speakers, I wanna be your slave is an example. Listen to the original and then the one they recorded with Iggy Pop. Iggy of course doesn't need/care to copy Damiano's style but he does struggle with the very specific rhythm in the first part of the lyrics, and you can hear that. To Italian speakers here Damiano does add extra emphasis here and there, to add rhythm as you noticed (it's a very minimalistic - acoustic setup for the band, even if technically a full set of drums is as acoustic as you can get, still their choice is to give Ethan little to do; meaning that Damiano's voice is carrying the song even more). Those emphasis mix and add up with the natural ones of the Italian language, which is a skill in both singing and song writing. What I mean, for Italians is easy to sing along, as far as words and melody are concerned, but not as easy to deliver the correct rhythm. The bridge is even more interesting, as he's playing with rhythm and syntax. Again this is very hard to get for non speakers. Italian is a s-v-o language much like English but the order is not as strict and more often than not the subject is implied and omitted. The core of the sentence is the very tight v-o pair. In the first verses of the bridge "Prima di te ero un pazzo / ora lascia che ti racconti / avevo una giacca sgualcita / portavo [B] tagli sui polsi / oggi mi sento benedetto / e non trovo [B] niente da aggiungere / ..." there are no subjects, not even one. The verbs "ero", "avevo", "portavo", "sento", "trovo" all imply "io" (I) as subject. The v-o pairs carry all the meaning. Damiano chooses to break the sentence and take a breath at the most unexpected time, right in between the v-o pair. If you didn't know (and feel) it was done on purpose, you'd think he ran out of breath. I've marked the breaks with the [B]. This feels very unnatural, almost disturbing, to Italians. I have trouble singing along because of that, it's very off-beat compared to the natural rhythm of the language so to say, but matches perfectly with the broken rhythm of the music. Imagine singing Let It Be like this: "Let it be, let it [B] be / Let it be, let it [B] be / whisper words of [B] wisdom, let it be". This song is also powerful as it tells the story of the relationship of artists with their inspiration (personified as "Marlena"). It's great but of course it doesn't last forever, and the song is a cry to call "her" back. [The rational me argues that it barely makes any sense as you have to be strongly inspired to write such a beautiful song, so lack of inspiration can't be your problem, but I digress]

I totally agree with you. Even for us Italians is hard to sing along with him, in fact if you listen to Italian guys sing this song, as me, we usually start to sing at "quindi Marlena torna a casa perché il freddo qui si fa sentire, quindi Marlena torna a casa perché non voglio più aspettare". This part is easy and the words are pronounced slowly, even though I struggle with the rhythm, because I'm not a singer, but never mind. Anyway I love your comment. It's so specific.
@TheMule71
@TheMule71 3 жыл бұрын
@@stefaniaviterbo8573 Thanks! It's not just you struggling with the rhythm, and even singers would struggle. Non native speakers probably find it easier, for them it's just sounds with a rhythm. For us it's words, with unnatural rhythm. Damiano plays with rhythm in many ways. Breaking mid-sentence is just one way. Another one, even more subtle, is tonic stress. If you pay attention, "e non trovo niente da aggiungere/questa città si affaccèra quando ci vedrà giungere", has a natural rhythm guided by tonic stresses in "città", "affaccerà", "vedrà". But Damiano breaks it, he actually sings the way I've written it, "affaccèra" instead of "affaccerà" (I need to explain to non speakers: in these words the tonic stress is on the last syllable, which is uncommon in Italian). It's very subtle, you need to listen to it very carefully... Damiano sings "affaccèra" which technically is wrong (artistic license) but fits with the rhythm of the music. It's a tiny change, but if you try and sing it, and you sing "affaccerà" (which is correct Italian) you'll find yourself off-beat (w/o really knowing why). These things make it harder to sing along for Italians, in a way. You don't really notice them until you actually try.

the cool thing with these kids is that very few of their songs sound like more of the same.. they dabble in different genres and rhythms and styles with ease... I know doing more of the same band is probably not your thing but I would suggest, if nothing else for personal enjoyment, to listen to Coraline and grab the english lyrics for it..it's an absolute gutpunch... La paura del buio is also worth a listen for Damiano's vocal antics.. but really most of their songs are bangers

Come Back Home Versioni: #1#2#3 I'm walking through my city, the wind is blowing hard I left everything behind, the sun's on the horizon I see houses from afar, they closed the doors But luckily I've got her hand and her red cheeks She pulled me up from the ground covered with thorns With a thousand snakes' bites, motionless through the coils She didn't listen to those bastards and their cursing With one look she convinced me to pack my bags and leave And this is a journey no one's ever made before Alice and her wonders, the mad hatter We'll walk along this road and I'll never be tired Until time brings white onto your hair Just a paper sheet and half a cigarette are left in my hand Let's stay a little longer, we're not in a hurry Because I've got a sentence written in my head, but I've never said it Because life without you can't be perfect So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back home, I don't want to wait anymore So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back home, because I'm afraid I'll disappear And the sky is slowly becoming transparent here The sun is illuminating the people's weaknesses A salty tear wets my cheek, while She sweetly caresses my face with her hand With blood on my hands I'll climb all the peaks I want to get where the human eye stops In order to learn to forgive all of my sins Because sometimes even angels are afraid of death Just a paper sheet and half a cigarette are left in my hand Let's run away from those who are too thirsty for revenge From this motionless land, because I'm feeling it stifling now Yesterday I was quiet because today I'll be the storm So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back home, I don't want to wait anymore So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back home, because I don't want anymore... Before you I was just a lunatic, let me tell you now I wore a creased jacket and cuts on my wrists Today I feel blessed and can't find anything else to add This city will look out when it sees us arrive I was in the balance between being the victim and being the judge I was a shiver that brings light to darkness And sets you free from these bright shiny chains And I'm in doubt, whether they were deaths or rebirths So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back home, I don't want to wait anymore So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back, because I don't want to disappear anymore, ah ah ah Ah ah, nai nai nai nai So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here So, Marlena, come back home, because I'm afraid I'll disappear lyricstranslate.com/it/torna-casa-go-back-home.html

Let's just hope they don't expire in the craziest commercial music just to make a lot of money. Here in Italy we have a lot of hopes for this band. Because Maneskin represent something healthy compared to the vulgar pop made by abusing Autotune effect.

Sadly the only songs that are playing on mainstream media are their worst songs, for me Beggin is borderline unlistenable and nowhere near as their best songs. I'm hoping commercialization won't ruin them and force them to make more songs like that because they're gonna get more popular like that.

Torna a Casa (Come back home) - the name Marlena in this song refers to their muse/creative inspiration not a real woman - so when they sing Marlena torna a casa (Marlena come back home) they are imploring their creative muse to come back and inspire them. The official video for this is really good too but I would recommend watching a video with the English lyrics translation - or other language translation - as well - see below for one of these for English. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gafYq3-dich9jsU They have another really good acoustic performance for their song Moriro da Re (I'll die like a King) from the same session - see link below. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnOraGuge9GYjLs

Great observations, especially considering that you don't speak Italian. There is a point (about 1:37) where you are commenting on the dynamics but you are talking over the top of one of the most beautiful dynamics in this performance (even more so than the studio version) where Damiano whispers "perchè la vita, senza te, non pùo essere perfetta" (because life, without you, can not be perfect). How does such a young man become such a master of his craft? Sublime. This band are going places.

I walk around my city and the wind blows hard I left everything behind and the sun on the horizon I see the houses, from afar, they’ve closed the doors But luckily I have her hand and her red cheeks She picked me up off the ground covered in thorns With the bites of a thousand snakes held still by the coils She didn’t listen to those bastards and their cursing With a look she convinced me to pick up and go ‘Cause this is a journey that no one has taken before Alice, her wonders and the Mad Hatter We will walk this street and I will never be tired Until time brings white to your hair ‘Cause I’ve been left with a sheet of paper in my hand and half a cigarette Let’s stay a little longer, there’s no rush ‘Cause I have a sentence written in my head but I’ve never said it Because life, without you, cannot be perfect So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, I don’t want to wait any longer So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, because I’m afraid of disappearing And the sky slowly becomes transparent here The sun illuminates people’s weaknesses A salty tear wets my cheek while She gently caresses my face with her hand With blood on my hands I will climb all the peaks I want to get to where the human eye stops To learn to forgive all my sins Because even the angels, at times, are afraid of death Because I’ve been left with a sheet of paper in my hand and half a cigarette Let’s run away from those who have too much thirst for revenge From this still Earth because it oppresses me Yesterday I was quiet because today I will be the storm So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, I don’t want to wait any longer So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, because I don’t want to anymore Before you I was just a fool, now let me tell you I had a creased jacket and I had cuts on my wrists Today I feel blessed and I can’t find anything to add This city will show itself when it sees us coming I was caught between being a victim, being a judge It was a thrill that brings light into darkness And it frees you from these bright, shiny chains And the doubt or not, if they were dead or reborn So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, I don’t want to wait any longer So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, I don’t want to disappear anymore Ah, ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah, rai, rai, rai, ra-ah So Marlena, come home, because it’s getting cold here So Marlena, come home, because I’m afraid of disappearing

If anyone ever doubts that Beth is really living for the music, just have a look at this video and how the music grabs her and how she got overwhelmed by emotions at the beginning of the video, even if she doesn't understand the lyrics. Also good job on you Beth for quickly switching back to the usual coach analysis side of things.

Thankyou for the very interesting analysis. I have no technical singing knowledge, All I know is that I love Damiano's vocals and the passion in each performance but it's great to get some insight into what he is doing on a technical level and it makes it even more impressive to me.You picked a great performance for this too and I'm so pleased you picked up that their songs tend play with expectations and tease the listener, they build to crecendos and then drop put unexpectedly and hit your with drops in expected places. It's something I really love about their compositions.

During the last few years in Italy talents mainly linked to other musical genres have been born. This is a fact, but that doesn't mean nothing else was born. In fact, Måneskin can be considered - in the best sense of the term - an anomaly compared to the musical panorama of recent years. They seem to be shaped by the seventies, they are charismatic, eclectic and their latest works have literally climbed the charts.

Those guys makes me proud of being Italian and I garuantee, it doesn't happen often. They truly got the right path. Charme, charisma, music knowledge as well as they know when to make English lyrics (more powerful rock songs) and Italian for ballads. Thx so much Beth!!

"Non mi capita spesso di essere fiero di essere italiano". Come se fosse una vergogna 🙃... Ho capito quasi dall'inizio quando ho scoperto l'Italia e gli Italiani (d'Italia) che è forse il più grande diffetto di molti Italiani questa auto-sconsiderazione permanente.

Honestly I'm not in for a "national fight", not going to ruin Beth's channel, I was just talking about the Italian music scene that isn't really shining above last years, course enraged Italians felt free to provoke and taunt not even trying to understand my point (plus, you really should write English here..) 🤷‍♂️

You always find and react to my favourite bands, I'm so happy! You should react to the video of them singing morirò da re from the same session! And I'm sure people have mentioned the I wanna be your slave live performance! :) It's really nice to see someone do a proper react and talk about the interesting particularities in the singing and Damiano's voice, rather than just being shocked/snotty about "omg sex appeal" like some of the videos YT kept recommending me did, so thank you! 😊I always love learning about things I wouldn't have noticed in vocal performances :)

It surprises me how many great 'love' songs are not actually about love of a person. They might instead be love for a place, or music, or in this case a muse. The similarly named Italian classic "Torna A Surriento" was originally an advertisement to encourage tourists to visit the Bay of Naples. LOL. Edit: Sorrento wanted tourists to return as soon as possible as it was in need of cash to pay for a new sewage system. So maybe a more accurate title would have been 'Return To Smelly Sorrento'. But, of course, that does not sound so romantic.
@Maloenton-Agency
@Maloenton-Agency 3 жыл бұрын
the song "Torna a Surriento" dates back to 1894. at that time the city was in disaster like all other cities in Italy ... not only Sorrento. Today Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast are places frequented by rich people from all over the world!
