The difference between music from the past and today’s music is that artists used to seek to promote a change in consciousness through it. What artists like Madonna and Michael have is that their music is transcendent. That is something current singers lack. The closest to this so far is Adele. She is organic, releasing her complete music (no deluxe editions, no unnecessary quadruple covers, no extra songs per edition when you can listen to them for free on KZbin) just music, just Adele.

Right. I think context is everything here. This is more of a still moment of appreciation (appreciation of them, their longevity, their careers, their fanbases) than it is a fully realized duet performance. Minimal instrumentation, practically zero production and no choreography. Just the two of them, their history, the music and the audience. As a long time fan of both, this was perfect.

We have the full concert now in a decent quality live from Rio, as usual, her concerts are a journey and the best way to analyze or understand them is to watch the whole thing. Also Madonna's energy was different throughout the tour, I mean, she came back from death. Afterwards she changed I Will Survive for Express Yourself, meaning she stopped feeling sorry for herself. That's the song I listened to in Mexico and it was a very special moment of the show because everyone was singing.

This is a moment in the show where Madonna just plays a stripped down version of a song (usually this or "Express Yourself"). Given Madonna's health scare last year, the more introspective interpretation of "I Will Survive" works well but I don't really care for the song choice in general. Kylie definitely brought a more playful energy to it but it was an impromptu, one-off performance, so it's not a big deal. Madonna had just finished doing a big choreo number (in a leather corset!) so that probably explains the breath control issue in the beginning.

I thought it was lovely just to see them interact on stage - the intro was the best bit. As for the song choice - meh! It was stilted - not a song for either of their voices in this boring arrangement. This was a missed opportunity. Madonna just has to make us listen to her play guitar - she’s not that good at it, always looks like a frozen statue and doesn’t have the voice for this sort of thing - as in, it just doesn’t suit her voice - which is far better with good production and memorable songs around it.
