Loved how much you got on first listen but lol when you said they're models. During their early days they decided to concentrate on vocals and performance because they weren't pretty enough to attract attention through their looks. They caught flak for not coming up to kpop beauty standards, esp Hwasa (the curvy "fatal maknae" w/the jaguar). It was like you were checking off boxes on the list of what makes Mamamoo great - the rainbow range of vocal colors, the unique timbre of each member, the unexpected and shifting phrasing & emotional tone that compels your attention, etc. I think they've started doing something different and more personal than we usually get with pop music. Imo, starting this year with the song Paint Me, Mamamoo has really focused on using a range of vocal techniques to capture the listener from moment to moment - the medium (their voices) is the message. That probably sounds trite but pop songs usually rely on the groove and the melody to carry the tune whereas I think Mamamoo is trying to take us on a journey with their voices. It's like the direct emotional connection a great jazz soloist makes with the listener - the ride is what's thrilling and the point of it all rather than necessarily getting anywhere in particular. Paint Me is a good example because it's a ballad without a climax. Mamamoo certainly knows how to blow up a song and bring the house down with belting & harmonies if they want to but they had something different in mind. This year they're releasing 4 mini-albums; each has a theme color & season. MMM said they're using this 4 album project to explore & express different sides of themselves as artists through the colors & seasons. Paint Me is the theme song for the project and the song & MV reveal the color associated with each member. I think this year they're painting self-portraits in music using the colors & seasons as their palette. Egotistic is from the red & summer album Red Moon. It's obviously red-hot with latin passion and sensuality but you'll notice they each have different "red" qualities in the MV - pole dancing Solar is sexy & strong; Hwasa w/jaguar is wild & fierce; rapper Moonbyul who throws the chair is angry & defiant; fire starter Wheein is a tough, bad ass, hot-tempered chick with nose ring & tattoos. They're confident, independent women "seeing red" with anger at the egotistic lover who wants to treat them as a mere satellite, expressed 4 different ways. Everyone is telling you to listen to Mamamoo on Immortal Songs 2 but many of their best performances on IS2 are a couple years old. They've matured and improved imo and have different artistic goals these days so we're getting different vocal techniques. But you probably know the old Tom Jones song Delilah so you should definitely check out what MMM does with it. Since you like guitar you'll probably catch the quote from Concierto de Aranjuez just before all hell breaks loose on stage and the camera shows jaws dropping in the studio audience. Immortal Songs 2 is a competition show where many of Korea's top pro singers compete with new arrangements of classic songs. Mamamoo is the only kpop idol group to win multiple times on IS2. Kpop idol singers don't usually have the vocal chops to compete with the mainstream artists. Btw, MMM didn't win for Delilah. Interesting that you mention the Kpop beauty standards which I think are garbage. I instantly fell in love with Hwasa, she is mind numbingly beautiful. I love that these girls, like Sistar all look distinct from each other. They are all so naturally beautiful and I love how they seem to embrace that. I also love how they loosely coordinate outfits or not at all. The fact that they are that talented vocally is just the icing on the cake! They have the hugest range in Kpop too, their sound is so diverse. I am a new Mamamoo fan but already crazy about them.

Yohanna67 Welcome to the radish field, in case nobody has said that yet. 😂 This is a great time to get into Mamamoo - there's so much diversity this year between the group albums and their solo projects and collaborations. Moomoos have been saying 2018 is the year of the radish but even long-time fans have been surprised as they reveal more facets of themselves and keep raising the bar artistically. I love that they long ago decided to embrace who they are and not worry about fitting into anyone's mold as women or artists. I think it includes the decision to welcome each member's uniqueness (in fashion, personality & music) rather than insist on group conformity. Their song Yes I Am is all about that grrl power message. It's an empowering and liberating choice that fuels self-confidence and I think it may even have something to do with why they seem to get more beautiful as they age. Confidence is sexy. Mamamoo is a fascinating blend of quirky & relatable distinct individuals with magnificent group synergy.
