The difference is probably that Elis was freaking pissed off when she sang that song. She was singing about the dictatorship she was living at the time. Right now we can sing with emotion but not the anger they felt back then. Mother and daughter have different styles, of course, but that anger that drove Elis is not present anymore and that shows

As I said in your analysis of Elis, this is a protest song, made at the time of the dictatorship in Brazil. When Maria Rita sings, the protest tone gives way to a tribute to her mother. that's why Maria Rita's interpretation sounds more lovely and calm.

Maria Rita was quite criticized in Brazil for trying to "mimic" her mother, which took a toll on her and made her avoid Elis' repertoire. This concert tour is the only time she sang her mother's hits. Apart from that she goes for something quite different and tailored to her voice. A great artist in her own right.
@danilooliveira65804 жыл бұрын
its really sad, because her take on her mother's musics are great. though I agree her own stuff sounds a lot better for her, I love how "sassy" she is when singing.

Beautiful!! The song she is singing was one of the most famous in her mother's voice, Elis: "Like our parents". The lyrics of this song are particularly very important and sad for us Brazilians, because it refers to the tragic period of the military dictatorship in the 60s and 70s, where many people were tortured, disappeared or killed, including many artists.

He was in a birthday party, he was only 7 years, the family pleased to listen that small child. They put him over a table, he closed his eyes and song. When he opened her eyes, he saw tears in the eyes of family, at that moment he understood music is the reason of her life, cause he was born with a great capacity of take soooo many air and with a only breathe.,make fasetto up and down realizing like waves than goes and comes. That, s the reason I, m doing all that. You (sorry for the next words) must meet Antonio Molina. I thing you, re gonna cry cause his voice was unique. So many good vocal tips Beth. I can use them. Often it comes down to the style we sing. Once you start extending the range past c5 (for women) then the technique will change. I think that's where the "mix" comes into play. Maria Rita stays well within the chest voice range so she can "speak" on pitch very effectively. --Edit: I like how she gets her mouth open by tilting her head back rather than just dropping her jaw. This seems to work for a lot of singers.

The difference between the kind of emotion Elis Regina and Maria Rita show during the sing are definetely noticeble, as you point out and, idk if you got to read about Elis during some research or something, but this song was written (by Belchior, another excellent brazilian songwriter and singer) and recorded (by her) during the roughest years of the brazilian military dictatorship. Elis often used to criticize the government (in her songs and during enterviews)and saw many friends being persecuted for protesting against the regime (the main theory is that she herself was not persecuted mainly because of her major popularity and talent - that got her fans even among the oppressors). Anyway, this song is a vivid criticism of the brazilian social and political contex at that time (during the 70's) and she puts her angry and her heart to it (i believe) because she was living it, intensely. Maria Rita, her daughter, however, even though extremely talented as well, recorded the video you used in the review in 2012, when brazil had already 24 years of democracy. The political and social context was completely different and, not trying to diminish Maria Rita in any way, but it wasn't an angry moment for Brazil. We was having then some stability and life, although not perfect, was kinda nice. Nowadays brazil seems to be coming back to that mess we were in the 70's. And Maria Rita is indeed pretty talented, maybe you get to review some video of her singing with the same emotion, passion and angry her mother showed many years ago. I sincerely hope not.

Nice review. Maria Rita finded her style after began very similar to Elis. This interpretation keeps some hommages to the immortal performance of her mother. If I may, I would like to suggest you to listen to Secos e Molhados - Rosa de Hiroshima. It was recorded in the 70’ from a poem by Vinícius de Moraes. I strongly recommend that you read the translated lyrics and listen the great interpretation of the singer Ney Matogrosso. It’s a very short song (aboit 2 minutes), but the message is extremly intense and I am sure that you will be touched. There is no one who can’t feel the power of this song. Everytime I listen I pay attention to each word, all meanings and got emotional.
