You asked, "who composed this" All Nightwish music is composed by Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player you see right there. A world-respected Maestro. He also writes the lyrics, this one particularly is pretty emotional, talks about himself during the time he had to let Tarja go (the original singer that you saw on Phantom of the Opera video), and the depression he had about it besides the media storm he had to struggle. He divided the whole song into 5 parts, like a theatre play or something, pretty awaesome.

Was going to write something similiar, but you beat me to it. Good post :)

The sad part is that he is not comfortable releasing things in his own name. "(While Your Lips Are Still Red) is not an official Nightwish track, but Holopainen has stated that he is not comfortable with releasing any material under his own name. " But it is a great song, "Nightwish - While your lips are still red" Not officially a nightwish song and doesn't have any female vocals or guitars. A song made for the 2007 Finnish movie "lieksa".

This is the kind of stuff we need for Super Bowl Halftime shows and Grammys. It’s a shame that bands like these don’t get a lot of mainstream attention here in the US.. Not to mention, while they may be a metal band, they still perform with class. And it’s not focused on a vocalist who thinks she has to bare it all for the world to see. They focus on the MUSIC and that’s what matters. Excellent, incredibly talented musicians.

The entire Metal genre itself is actually considered a "high quality" music genre in scandinavian countries, which means it gets much more attention there. As a metal song writer or musician you are not some weirdo, but you are actually quite a respected person more in the direction "member of a classical orchestra" or "conductor" than a pop musician. Watching you experience Nightwish brings back how I felt when I discovered them. And then you add Floor to it and they are amazing. The other two singers were amazing in their own right. They brought the songs to life in their own way. Tuomas wrote the songs to match each vocalist. The thing with Floor is that she is the most versatile out of the three. So she can do almost all of his songs, where the other two were limited. Thank you for doing these songs from Nightwish. You never know what to expect.............

@TheBlackiwid I know what you are saying. She does sound better in the studio versions. She did struggle with the live shows. Another thing is she had to follow in Tarja's footsteps. Great reaction RVA. A few things, in the original version with Anette, two boy sopranos sang much of the higher passages, plus the spoken segments. Floor can sing the boy soprano parts, but they elected to retain the boy soprano for the introduction. "Sparkle my scenery" was originally sung by a boy soprano, but now Floor sings it. She does so with the thin, slightly unstable head voice of a boy soprano. The woman sings without ego, willing to deliberately introduce that slight instability for effect, not worrying about the critics waiting in the bushes, read to pounce on any perceived error. I've yet to read/hear anyone comment on her stance. Whenever Floor is singing a delicate, emotional passage, she stands very femininely with her feet close together, one slightly advanced. When she goes into power or aggression vocals, her feet are apart and square to the audience, the male power stance, ready to charge or receive the charge. It's one of the bits of her game that I find interesting. Probably someone has already mentioned this in the comments, but Tuomas based this music on the "Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe. The attention to detail - "Three minutes and counting" to the swish of the blade is exactly three minutes.
@vrdr47595 жыл бұрын
Amazing reaction as always. In your Ghost Love Score review I mentioned that this one needs to come with an "emotional impact warning". Tuomas poured his heart, his soul, and all the emotions related to the upheaval of the band firing Tarja and the impact it had on him into this one. I think of it as musical catharsis for the troubling and painful period of his life at that time. It evokes dread, sorrow, fear, happiness, peacefulness, a rush of energy. Just a perfect piece of music.

Hi Rebecca, I'd like to tell you some things about this video : 1- Tuomas, who composed this masterpiece wrote and composed it while he was strugling with severe depression after they had to fire the first vocalist Tarja Turunen, and he said himself that he lost not only a good singer, but also a good friend. It was a really hard time for him and he put a lot of emotions in this song. This is why this song is one of the fans' favorite. And also because the intro is one of the most epic intro in music history. 2- The drummer Kai Hahto is an absolute monster. He is very respected and some people say that he is maybe the best drummer in Finland. He also plays jazz music, just to tell you that he is a fantastic musician. 3- Floor Jansen is a goddess : I totally agree with that. 4- I'd love to see you react to Epica - Chasing the Dragon LIVE Retrospect 2013 : it's a very hard song to sing. I was at the front row for a Nightwish concert when they were doing their Greatest Show on Earth Tour (which you should check out the song Greatest Show on Earth, not so much for the vocal analysis as much as the theatric experience). "Female Freddie Mercury" yesssss! :D Don't be sorry for getting emotional! This song is an incredible emotional rollercoaster even if you have no idea what it's about. Tuomas has almost supernatural ability to channel emotion into his music, he's not only a bona fide musical genius (his idol Hans Zimmer considers him an equal) but damn near a wizard as well. And Floor's musical theatre background (as well as her general brilliance, obviously) serves the song wonderfully.
@petethorley59985 жыл бұрын
You can't possibly compare Floor t9 Freddie Mercury. Freddie wasn't an amazing vocalist. A good one yes, but not as Epic as Floor.. What he was, was an entertainer. Possibly one of the best. In comparison, Floor is an EPIC vocalist. But less of an entertainer. That takes the whole band in Nightwish. And entertain they do. Best live show I've ever seen!!!

You'll find "that sound" is related to the pendulum blade imagery and Tuomas's decapitation gesture ;) Short version.. It's about how Tuomas felt some form of internal death upon the sacking of their first vocalist (and childhood friend) and then perceived betrayal of the band's fanbase, leading into the Dark Passion Play and the poet upon the altar and the descending blade, then the release.

In my reaction I teared up at exactly the same moment as you. So powerful. When I did their song Our Decades In the Sun I started bawling when I was talking about it. NO band has ever affected me like Nightwish ❤
@MetalChickCrisis20405 жыл бұрын
As for what it's like to be at a Nightwish show... It's very difficult to put into words because it's so much of everything. The set list tends to include a small fraction of everything, and naturally depending on the song that's playing there might be a range of emotion surfacing within the crowd as well as within the band, but. The best way for me to articulate it is to think of Nightwish like one massive roller coaster with cork screws and loops and massive drops; fast and exhilarating, but it slows down to take you back up the hills only to plummet you back toward the ground before rocketing you once again skyward. It's an experience. You become the embodiment of music along with them because the sound reverberates through your entire body. Floor's voice resonates and sends chills racing down your spine, and she has this uncanny ability to invigorate you when she's on the stage. At times, it becomes too much and you're tearing up, because your heart and soul are just so full in that moment. Seeing them live is like being given a breath of life. You will never forget it. If you ever have the chance to see them, please do. It's one hell of a rewarding experience, and I fear I will keep prattling on here attempting to capture the essence of this beautiful fucking band when words just aren't enough. Just make sure to take some preemptive ibuprofen, lol. Not only will the guys make you want to head bang with their incredible musicianship, but Floor is like an electrical conductor. When she is struck by a lightning bolt of pure metal energy, it goes through her and then splinters out among the crowd. When I saw them live, they performed an older song called "Slaying the Dreamer", and there's a part in the song where the band and majority of us in the crowd, synchronized our head banging as if it were inevitable. It was phenomenal.

Nightwish is incredible live. I took my Dad to see them on the Decades tour as they're one of our favorite bands and it was incredible. He just kept saying "I could have stayed there listening to her voice all night" when the show was over.
@MetalChickCrisis20405 жыл бұрын
@@Nightwishmaster That is awesome, haha. I completely agree 100% with your Dad. When Floor takes the stage, it's impossible not to be mesmerized. When I saw them, the crowd cheered for the guys, but when Floor walked on stage, it was like a wave of renewed energy hit the crowd. It was at a festival, and all of us had been waiting for hours, but the band refreshed us instantly. And whenever Floor would thrust out her arms in that iconic wingspan display of hers, the crowd would scream louder than they were screaming before. It was something else. I've been to a lot of gigs, but I've yet to see anyone captivate the audience like Nightwish does.
@faranyon5 жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better. Seeing Nightwish live is something that will have you reeling for hours, days, even longer. There is no way to define the amount of emotion in you during and afterwards. No better high than that. And I'm sending all the love to Tarja (she's the one that made me fall for the band with Sleeping Sun back in the day), but live shows with Floor have been even more than what they were with Tarja or Anette. Makes me so glad that I'm alive right now and I'm able to experience it all.

This song is something that takes me to places. Just close my eyes, and I can be right in there, you know. A weirdest thing, but some songs do that. How the hell do you compose something like this? You have a vision and suddenly you have like 30 different instruments in your mind that could work for a 10+minutes of a song? Well, maybe I dont have to understand how its done, but Tuomas is nothing short of a genius when it comes to songwriting. And Floor, she is just amazing, time after time. The best thing that could ever have happened to Nightwish and I am so glad that she is singing in the band now. Hopefully it will stay that way in the future also. Thanks for the reaction video. I like it when I see that you also clearly sink into the music and feel it. Thats lovely. Also for me, Who knows absolutely nothing about singing, this is kinda refreshing to learn something about it, you know, where different voices come from (head, chest etc) and all other stuff thats related to it.

And as someone who used to play an instrument (an eternity ago), I still remember what it was like to play in a band and orchestra -- which is why I love the analysis of this song. This piece makes me cry.. there is so many layers in the lyrics here Rebecca.. so many layers and you need to know them to really get what this song is about, it's great sadness about losing beautiful friendship.. people tend to point their fingers on Tuomas blaming him whatever feels good at the moment and forgetting the fact that he was devastated of loosing long time childhood friend, he just knew all the blame will come on his shoulders and he has carried that for too many years now, too many indeed.. it's needs always two to quarrel, and both are as guilty. But we need to understand how artistic person Tuomas is.. I mean if he just could not compose any songs for Tarja to sing anymore .. in my opinion it is quite big thing... He is a storyteller, a storyteller who's soul needs to be in balance and somehow he makes it happen trough his music.. my dear Rebecca, that you must see and his lyrics are full of meaningful things and his soul is delicate and humble..otherwise he wouldn't be able to write this colorful very emotional music for us to enjoy
