I like how she’s going into much detail about his voice when whole time kurt tried vocal lessons once and said it was a waste of time 😂
@matthewbeach29524 жыл бұрын
Kurt and anyone for that matter will benefit from vocal lessons. Rock musicians especially seem to be anti lessons or something. If Kurt had lived longer, I’m sure he would have felt the effects of his technique. Usually technique like this is pretty hard on your voice. But Kurt was also pretty gifted with his voice, maybe he would have been alright. Anyway the point is, he may have though they were a waste of time, and although he’s one my my all time favorite musicians, that’s just plain wrong. He may have seen a shitty vocal coach that wanted him to change his style. But any good vocal coach like Beth here would be able to help Kurt make his voice and technique more healthy/reliable WITHOUT him losing his style. Take Layne Staley for example. He had a LOT of lessons and the result was that he was honestly a lot more polished of a singer, and still as raw as Kurt. But just like Beth said, the beauty is in the imperfections. So I still prefer Kurts singing. That said, the music is what it is and I wouldn’t change ANYTHING if I could.

Hey Beth! I love your videos. I honestly didn't know what to expect as far as your reaction to this one. I think Kurt was a phenomenal singer with an incredibly expressive voice that ranges from beautiful to blood curdling. As you said, he's not always technically perfect, but he is extremely expressive. So many people don't get that about his voice, and about his guitar playing. They fail to recognize the obvious intensity in his expression and just hear it as someone who can't sing well, completely missing the point and the beauty of it all. To see that a true vocal technician like you not only gets it, but appreciates and marvels at it is awesome.

There are not many singers who care to reveal that much of themselves. But then there's Kurt delivering his message so in your face, that you don't notice that the guy is basically nude. Alice in Chains "Man in the Box" live at the Moore is one you definitely need to listen too. One of the best vocal performances ever.

I watched a video of Dave Grohl at Lemmy's funeral. He told a story about meeting Lemmy (a hero of his) for the first time. He introduced himself and the first thing Lemmy said was "Sorry about your friend!" Oh yeah, do Ace of Spades! 🙂

This song is classic for sure. Besides the vocals though the one thing that stands out to me, especially during the chorus, is how the bass gets a lot crazier, or at least a lot more notey and chaotic. Seems to really emphasize the vocals even more which is just cool.

Kurts screaming songs are great and all, but the i believe beauty in his voice really comes from when he calms it down, his voice can both be powerful and weak when performing softer songs. Kurt had an immense amount of heart and soul, that that i dont think we've seen since, and it really shines when accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Not to mention a wonderfully purposeful country twang he would add. Id love to see a breakdown of any of the unplugged performances with the Meat Puppets, or any of the acoustic home demos from montage of heck.

Loved the reaction and your thoughts about his voice. I gotta admit though, every time I hear him sing and perform it just makes me miss him.

I just say that Kurt Cobain had actually "felt" the lyrics and just THAT made how he sang it all so much more REAL and/or intense.

Hello! I learnt about your channel today just about 2 hours ago. I have watched several of your videos. I incidentally, was looking for vocal coaches commenting on various musicians and for me your content is far far superior. A few of my observations which I though makes you stand out- 1. You don't pretend to hear everything for the first time. 2. You happily admit having listened to many of these songs and artists. Precisely how it should be, people like me are probably searching for someone who has heard these earlier or before to be able to comment else it's just appreciation of the songs and that anyone with half a brain cell can do. From a different uploadeder I saw a video where the presenter said she could recognize the riff from back in black, you'd have to be dead to not know that in an English speaking nation. 3. You admit where you are out of your depth. The Hu videos. 4. You actually comment/explain and give examples. 5. You are very watchable, by that I don't just refer to how pretty you are but your screen presence as well. I hope you keep it up, would look forward to more of your content. Thanks. :)

I still miss him immensely. Saw them live a couple of weeks before this was recorded. Just off the top of my head, think this was recorded in mid December for New Year's 1993-4 and I saw them in Miami, FL the day after Thanksgiving. I tried to model my voice and playing style after him. Miss you Kurt.

Having grown up in the time where nirvana was big when I was a teen, kurt probably had at most the basics of healthy singing advice and just rolled on the pure raw emotion he felt. Voice be damned, shotgun at 27, the message of his pain and how he conveyed the emotion of what he was feeling in his music was the most important thing to him in the moment. Hoon, Staley, Cornell eventually, and so many people who made that music at that time felt that passion to be willing to destroy themselves to try to get across the pain they felt.
