@@Absolute.Virtue Yes and 4 years later she was declared healthy from cancer. Treating cancer is very tough for the whole body and especially the organs surrounding the tumor. If the cancer itself is severe then usually the side effects of the treatment is severe as well, to generalise you can say it takes tougher treatment to get rid of it. Unfortunately that was the case for her. So sad and extremely frustrating to get rid of a deadly disease just to get deadly side effects from treatment instead 🙁. This disease is a monster.

She was pretty damn big in the UK too. Roxette was one of my favourites in school in the early and mid 1990s. It was probably her that pushed me to my current taste in music which, aside from Pink Floyd and Queen, ALL of my favourite bands are fronted by women - Amy Lee, Lzzy Hale, Beth Orton, Birdy, even some lesser known musicians such as Judith de los Santos and Juliette Valduriez. I can't resist a female vocalist, particularly one with a strong, distinctive voice (although in the case of the last one on my list, it's more her guitar work than her voice!)

Per Gessle said it best - "Thankyou for bringing color to my black and white songs." He was the main songwriter, and a capable singer in his own right, but he knew the biggest anthems, power ballads, what have you, would do better with her voice. He has even said that his songwriting improved greatly because he had found such a great voice to write for.

@@chuckmoser8125 I still listen to both metal and Roxette, no shame there. I knew she had been ill for a while but I didn't know she passed. I just visited Sweden for the first time last year and thought about her... a story from the very early '90s: I was at this summer art camp in the mountains and all of us there spread over this meadow to paint. Me and a couple of others (we were 13-14) went to this log cabin to get something or another. There were two older (and much cooler) metalheads sitting on a log with a boombox, listening to Pantera. As Walk ended, one of them changed the tape and Listen to Your Heart started playing. The other one tried to make fun of him but he just shrugged and said "I like the song, dude."

I love her. I couldn't believe it when I heard that she had passed. My dad was successful hairstylist back in the day. He was ahead of his time and did hair shows before they were a thing. We would ride a round in limos like he was a real rockstar. Being the rocker he was, they were all rock n roll. With the exception of having me come on stage to sing "The Three Little Bears" lol. They see always so much fun. He would have people trying to climb on the stage and everything. I was just starting to walk and I would walk accross the stage and throw carnations into the audience with my dad. Whenever I listen to "The Look" it reminds me of that. It was the theme song to his shows. Her death hits close to home for me with my dad having passed two years ago unexpectingly at only 62. It still feels like yesterday.

Lovely reaction to one of Marie's greatest songs - right up there with Sparvöga. I'm a sucker for songs about heartache and this is one of the best.

I used to listen to Roxette and their songs were a lot of fun. Butbthis song is truly beautiful and a worthy composition. It epitomizes the end of the 80s and did so with the grace of a ballerina in a time when we had Eurythmics, Genesis and Sting. The world is a better place for having had Roxette in it, and will be a grayer place now that she has left.

Beth, I think she has almost an Ann Wilson quality to her voice when she would really belt it out. I bet she could have ripped up "Barracuda", although I'm not sure she could have done it in the same key as Heart.

Words can't express how much this video means to me. I first heard Roxette on the radio in 1991. I actually heard this song first, but I didn't connect it to her until later, when "Fading Like a Flower" was big here in the U.S. in late September that same year. In November, I heard "Spending My Time", and a few months later, in February, "Listen to Your Heart". For my eleventh birthday, I told my mom I wanted their album. I mentioned several songs, and only years later did it occur to me that Mom might not remember all of them. but she's good like that, and Joyride entered my world. The rest, as they say, is history. She's the reason I've wanted to sing ever since. She was the first and only person whose voice could all but bring me to my knees. It did make me cry more than once, and her passing devistates me in ways I can't put into words. I found out last Tuesday on my way home from seeing a couple friends, and I put my hoodie up over my face and cried. I think I'm in the denial stage, the "this can't be real, she's really gone?" stage. I hate this, and I wish it had been different. No cancer... My own belief is that things happen for a reason, but I can't reconcile this one. The good ones are always taken from us, it seems. From an analytical perspective: what do you think of the raspy/strained sound to her voice? Do you think it's intentional, or a product of overusing her voice and/or being on tour? There are only a few times I heard it in this recording, which is fascinating to me, since I hear more of it on their albums than in most live recordings. What do you think of the voice breaking mid-vowel or mid-word? I know it's intentional, but I've never heard anyone do it quite like Marie. Have you? Thank you, Beth...so much. You have a new subscriber now. Your sensitivity to her life, and her music, is beautiful, and it did my heart good to watch this.

There are 2 songs written by Marie that are my absolute favorites, unfortunately, they are not available in English...and that is a shame because the lyrics is good too. But I recommend anybody to listen to Sparvöga (literally Sparrow eye but with the feeling of being name) and Ännu doftar kärlek (There is still the scent of love) ...Probably not for a reaction unless you are Swedish but worth listening to

I wonder why they dodge the high notes. Is it to conserve their voices while on tour?
@torston
@torston 4 жыл бұрын
@@AmyAndThePup One of the reasons. The joyride tour they did then was massive so it definitely took a toll on her voice. Also from her voice here, sounded like she had a cold. She coukd sing the high notes live. Look for her early performance in Swedish - Lat mej andas, Efter stormen where she sang live in the studio.
@steveharris1740
@steveharris1740 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, when they tour a lot they have to make some concessions or they can have problems singing at all. It’s very difficult to belt out those high notes say after day. It can cause inflammation of the vocal chords.
