Actually not all of them. Tony the tenor 2 with spiky hair is not in voices of liberty but is instead a 4x barbershop international winner on baritone, tenor, and lead. He is the most decorated member ever in the Barbershop Harmony Society and is a friend of the founder since they both worth at Rawlins University in Orlando Florida.

Finally a "vocal coach" who is actually a vocal coach. I can't stand all these people posting videos who think just because you can match pitch and happen to have people who pay you money to try and teach them how to do the same you're entitled to call yourself a coach. This was a great instructional video. I never realized if you mispronounce or leave off certain syllables it actually sounds more like the word. Also hitting the front syllable with an almost staccato glottal hit vs. leaving it open really makes for a big difference in the impact of a word. Neat stuff.

Thanks for the response! I actually find myself singing a lot more just to figure out what sounds better. I wish I'd had a singing coach in junior high. I really love it but instead ended up playing a few instruments. Your hints are like voodoo. Changing how you sing words to make them better than when spoken is just magical. It definitely opened my eyes to something I'd been missing. I was like, "How are some people so much better at singing?" While some do have crazy natural talent like perfect pitch and 5 octave ranges (Mitch Grassi fkn amazing), I see a lot of it is due to proper technique. Thanks!

I think part of the beauty of Voctave is their unity and diversity...so many different types of voices and training, ranges, styles. It keeps it from being bland or purely technical or mechanical. Also, Sarah (red hair) is an alto and Ashley sings soprano/alto. They are wonderful musicians, though, and have adjusted and trained their voices to fit in where needed according to Jamey's arrangement and their vision for the finished piece. Thanks for the reaction to teach us what is going on and give us alternative ideas on how some other trained singers may choose to interpret and present songs.

I was a session player (trumpet) many years ago, so acquired an appreciation for the finer points of a performance. It's really nice to hear your critique and notes about the details of how these musicians do their craft. I would ask that you do a reaction to another Voctave performance - Disney Love Medley with Kirstin Maldonado and Jeremy Lewis. IMHO, this piece is incredibly well performed. Hi Tara, I really enjoyed listening to your feedback. I'm a Master of Music student studying at the Peabody Conservatory. I had a phenomenal vocal teacher at a past institution who stressed, among many other things, good diction. She would ask her choirs to do certain things which, when I told other students with excitement about them, were met with opposition by some solo vocal students here at Peabody. Here's what she said in an email to me about teaching diction, and I'm wondering what you think of her thoughts. 1. I describe the vocal chords/vocal folds, and explain that the membrane on the inner edge, where the folds come together, is called the glottis. When you bring the folds together with a definite action to achieve a clear start to the sound (and here I demonstrate "I Am Always"), you have what is called a glottal. A glottal only applies to words that start with vowels, as there are no consonants (which are created also with teeth, tongue, and/or lips) that precede the pure sound of the voice. 2. Because we lengthen syllables in singing--making them much longer than we would speak them, it is difficult for the ear to determine where one word ends and the next starts. We need to help our listeners know, and we do that by having clear beginnings and endings to words. If we start or stop with a consonant, we make it louder or longer. If we end a word with a voiced consonant (one which has pitch such as "and-uh") we can lengthen it (such as "lovvvvve") and/or add a shadow vowel to give the voiced consonant clarity and finality (such as "and-uh God-uh"). If we end a word with a voiceless consonant, such as "break" or "host" we make the ending consonant louder or more explosive. Equally important to ending consonants are beginnings of words. When words begin with a vowel, if we do not separate them from the previous word, they'll sound like a continuation of that word. We give a very slight separation by starting with a glottal, a slight attack to the vowel. Listen to the difference in this sentence. "I--Yam--Malways" or "I Am Always." We'll apply this principle to the words we sing that begin with vowels.

New fan of yours! You should check out all of voctave Disney songs. Before Kate Lott ( the 1st soprano) joined, there was another lady, she also is amazing. And of course Disney love medley with Kristin Maldonado and Jeremy Michael Lewis, Kate hits a note that will blow you away. Rachel Potter sings with them on a medley but it was E.J Cardona on Out There from the Hunchback of Norte Dame that blew it away. It is actually called Disney trio Animazement instead of voctave but it's still Jamey Ray's voctave. The voctave fly medley is the one with a lady in a green and black striped dress that can hit some notes.

I am very glad you did a Voctave number. I wish you could have evaluated a Magic of Voices number with Jackie Stressman. Have you evaluated one of her numbers?

where are you located and can I study with you???! I LOVED what I heard! Just in this video alone I heard you mention everything that I personally do well and the things I struggle with as a singer. I've had a hard time finding a vocal coach who is able to pull sound out of me the way you just did in a video! I studied viocal performance in college and have yet to do anything significant with it. This actually gave me some inspiration. Thank you

Great video. If you read this, I'd love to know why you feel that unstressed consanants "Voic-Es" need those open E sounds etc? If it's just giving it space I think it needs to be stressed that over cooking a weak syllable can be seen as poor diction as well. It was certainly the fashion for a long time to keep those final syllables open when singing in English but it's slightly frowned upon now if it's too over done. Anyways, interesting videos. Thanks for putting your thoughts online.

Corinne Spencer for sure! But that’s just it. I don’t want my singers to “over cook” the vowel. But if you don’t sing a true “e” you’re actually singing the word wrong and making it sound like “voiciz” which is farther from the original intention of the pronunciation of the word even when spoken. Hope that makes sense and helps!
