Well, I understand your tears of joy come with the deep appreciation of Dimash's performance. But the lyrics give reason to tears of sadness. Counter to what the background information, as such very needful and beautiful, Yoshiko Panaguchi / Li Xiang Lan did see China again. She was invited to serve as Japan's Minister of Culture, and in that capacity she paid an official visit to China. While in China she made inquiries about her husband, only to be told that he was dead. She was not told that he had been executed because of his having collaborated an fraternised with the "enemy." Pistol shot in the neck was his fate.

Gloria Wu's treatments are also helpful in understanding the meanings of Singer 2017 Ep.7 "Daididau" which is in Kazakh, and especially Ep.8 "Daybreak", where the intro (use the "cc" button) not only tells of the tragic circumstances behind the lyrics, but also goes into the fact that Dimash lost his voice the day before having to sing it, and got injections to his throat.

Just so you know, Gloria did a great thing by giving us interpretation and story,! The Qazaq language should now, since January 2018, be written in the Latin (Roman) alphabet. The Latinised Cyrillic "Kudaibergen" became the Latin "Qudaibergen." How the Q is pronounced would be the subject of another story, which I refrain from telling now -- it is a bit tricky and complicated, because the English language lacks the phoneme of Q.

Gloria Wu's story is incorrect. The song is simply a love song. It was never about a japanese actress. This has been easily misinterpreted.

The person glorified by Dimash in the song is a Japanese, Yoshiko Yamaguchi who was born in Manchuria China. Since small, she went by the Chinese name of Li Xianglan; she had vocal training by an Italian soprano dramatist. She sang beautifully in Chinese, Japanese and Russian too. Later she had a successful career as an actress and singer in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the USA. At Hollywood she went by the name Shirley Yamaguchi. During the war she acted in Japanese propaganda films. After the war the Kuomintang had her arrested for treason; the popular singer scorned by the Chinese community. Some Russian friends managed to locate her birth papers to show that she was a Japanese thus saving her from being executed by a firing squad. Instead a decision was made to deport her to Japan although she was China born. At the port, ironically the port's speakers were playing her songs before her ship departed for Japan. The original song is in Japanese titled "Ikanaide" sung by Koji Tamaki. She did return to China only 20 years later, as a member of the Japanese parliament. Before she died she did hear this song; she cried.
