Rihanna's original was the 'Gold Standard' for this ballad but after hearing Angelina's casual, at home, last minute performance with Ivan just adjusting beautifully as the song progressed, this is 'The Platinum Standard' for this song. When you are able to incorporate the inflections of Billie Holiday, that Angelina is expert at doing, the result is 'magical'. Her unique 'vocal chameleon' ability allows her to give the listener the impression that she actually lived the words she's singing when we realize it isn't possible. She is even reading the lyrics off a tablet in this 'one take' performance which further blows my mind.

I've seen and listened to Rihanna's video of this song several times. She's naked in a bathtub and must be pining about whatever the lyrics are saying. I had NO emotional connection with the video or her performance. So, the song never really registered with me. Then along comes 12 year old Angelina about 6 years later with her new microphone and guitarist Ivan Mendez. And I'm just blown away by what she delivered. After hearing her sing this song I felt totally different about it. It's really hard to describe what she is able to do. Absolutely STUNNING!!

I’m the same age as you and I agree much agree with you, except Angelina isn’t a vocal chameleon. Her talent is that she has unique voice and her musical choices are always her own. She doesn’t sound like other singers, and her ability to touch our our heart strings is beyond anyone else’s ability.

These low tech, limited practice, one take, raw performances with Angelina and Ivan are special. There is a certain intimacy in these sessions which almost makes me feel I am in the same room. By the emotion Angeline conveys, I feel the story changed even though the lyrics stay the same. With Rihanna there is a lot of hope and almost certainty that the other will be staying. With Angelina I feel she adds a lot of melancholy and sadness which for me changes the story to a love gone: she is asking the other to stay but she already knows it won't happen.

@@branscombeR You’re welcome! I feel she has a natural melancholy (though of course she has many other flavours :-)). I find it very interesting how just the timbre can change the story of a song. Something similar happens with her cover of ‘Young and beautiful’: Lana sings it in a more haunting timbre and Angelina with melancholy there as well. Lana’s singing gives it more desperation but with hope and Angelina’s version gives me the feeling that she is resigned that once the aging starts it is almost certainly over.

Thanks Valerie for another great reaction/analysis of one of Angelina's most beautiful covers. What makes it even more unbelievable is the fact that 15 minutes before this was recorded they were discussing what song to do. Once they decided on Stay, Ivan went over the cord changes while Angelina got the lyrics on her phone & grandma Mery gets the videocam ready. Angelina says "just follow me" & this is what yo get. The stank face on Ivan is because he is hearing it for the 1st time as she sings it on the fly in one take. That blows my mind. How can a 12 yo girl sing a song, on the fly, as she feels it with no post production, better than original artist's highly produced, multi-take, version? Just to make it easy for you, here is Rusty Shackelford's chronological list of 100 of her best songs. There are a number of these raw unrehearsed songs with Ivan on Guitar when she was 12. Before that, she did the same thing with her Norway guitarist, Egil Clausen, from age 8-12. Thank you for this reaction to our barefoot princess! :) The sessions with Ivan were completely spontaneous, she asked him "Do you know this cool song?", and then they sat down together and recorded it usually in one take. You can see her glancing at the lyrics on her tablet. She is something very rare, a true musical prodigy, people like Angelina, or also Alma Deutscher as another example, are treasures to the world.

I like your demeanor , you are pleasant to listen to and have a very calming way about you. So I have to offer this POV on Angelina's abilities, all of them. My belief is that she has been here before which would be a good reason for her ability to put so much emotion into her singing. I will say that you have the tendency to critique in a way that is still complementary but you are wrong on the preconceived ideas as to your explanation of how she can do the many amazing techniques. I really believe that if you put your mind to it you can listen, watch and feel when listening to AJ with the most objective mindset. Put aside placing a reason or reasoning to any of what you experience with her. Hello Valerie , thank you very much and you are right. Angelina cannot have experienced everything the songs are about herself. And yet she can bring the right feelings into the songs. Angelina doesn't change too much on most of her cover songs. That honors the original because these are all outstanding songs. But she changes enough of the songs to make them sound like her own. And with every cover you can hear it's Angelina singing. I don't know how Angelina does it. But it's typical of her. This is also part of her great musical talent that we love so much. My guess as to how she can emote these love and relationship songs was her friendship with Avicii, a young and handsome Swedish musician that passed at 22 in 2018. He appears to have taken her under his wing for a short time b4 he passed. Total guess on my part, but maybe she had a crush. Then to lose him I think to suicide, may have opened her up to emotions that most young children aren't exposed to. Plus her Grandfathers passing which we all know hit her very hard. This child has figured out a way to express all of her emotions through her most fluid and comfortable language, music, to the benefit of all of us. Angelina with out a doubt is a Musical Prodigy. What being a "Prodigy" actually is, is probably different for each individual. There are a few You Tubers that just don't understand how Angelina is able to so strongly emote such strong emotions from the songs she sings. I think part of the reason she does this so well, is due to her immense Emotional IQ, and generally very intelligent mind coupled with a very unique and larynx and face shape and built in love of music. Let's face it, some people have a such great empathy, they can absolutely understand great emotional content without having to experience personally while there are others that can live 40 years and never quite fully grasp the emotional context of their own experience. What I'm trying to say, I don't believe it is true that one must Experience heart ache and pain to be able to feel it and understand it and express it outwardly. Not all people are created equally thankfully. I remember watching one of her video's where she is at a Christmas school function where her class is singing christmas songs and Darling Angelina has a look of "They are butchering the music" while she refrains from singing. Then you eventually notice a child of similar age sitting beside her completely lost, and then Angelina notices that the girl is lost, and goes out of her way to visually communicate with her at the girls level to likely let her know she's okay and not alone. Then she returns to looking at he mom thinking "This music is getting butchered". The point of the story is, she is quite beyond her years both Empathically, Emotionally and intelligently.

Looks like you have not done "Happier" (a Marshmellow cover), another one on her CoverChannel with Ivan on guitar. There are some other songs they did together where Ivan is not seen in the video. For example, "I Know I'm Not the Only One" (a Sam Smith cover), found on her Fanclub Mosarz channel (the visuals are just footage shot by her grandmother of the family being chauffered to the Belagio hotel in Las Vegas). I believe he was also accompanying her on "How Great Thou Art", which can be found on Yozhik v Tumane's channel (she can be seen singing in this one - and just FYI, it contains the lowest note we've heard from her so far). Also, it looks like you still haven't done any of her recent TikToks, which she started doing about a year ago. I know you've had several of them recommended to you. You could do probably do 3 or 4 of them in the same reaction, since they're mostly really short. My personal favorite is "Love Is a Game". Incredible. "Leave the Door Open" is fun, becuase she sings the opening lines in a way she's never done before. And her current guitar skills are on display in "House of the Rising Sun" (and several others - you can generally tell which ones she's playing guitar on from the thumbnails).

Angelina is as mythical as unicorns. Thankfully, she's a unicorn that we can see and listen to. Trying to figure out how Angelina can organically put out these impromptu covers. Many have called her an 'old soul', and I believe (sans reincarnation) that she's been gifted to sing as she does. Who am I to claim what God could or could not do when he made AJ? She says of herself "I feel like I’ve lived many years more than my age. I feel like music found me." While her mind is a great mystery to us, we hear her soul coming through in her music. Angelina shared "It is an immense honor to be called a prodigy. I am very humbled, and I feel like I have a bigger responsibility to create more art. I always want to excel. What keeps me going and out of my own head is my passion to connect people through my music. I always want to let the music talk for itself." Yet, Angelina has dropped a few breadcrumbs for us to follow if we want to understand how she does it. At the age of 8, Angelina was asked in an interview how she can sing like she does. She said "I enter another world, and I think about the music. Then I have a good time." Before singing her original "Shield" on a televised show, the host asks her the same question; how do you do it? She (12 y/o) responded "When I sing I go to another world, and the world is like endless, it’s full of happiness and I love it, it’s amazing." I know of no way to quantify or qualify where her inspiration and talent come from. She just does it organically. She sounds like an angel, and draws the listener into her world; and this is significant. When we get swept up into her music, we experience some of that world she's inhabiting. Angelina opens a window into this state of being that she sings from. Who can help but to be swept away by her voice, and I, for one, have no intention of fighting the current. Given her ever increasing talent, she will one day have the very real potential of being a voice that draws the world in. Here's another impromptu cover that Angelina performed at 12. Angelina does have an amazing ability to interpret songs that are beyond her years, even well beyond her years. This was specifically noted by one of the judges on Norske Talenter (Norway's Got Talent) during Angelina's audition there at age 7, where Angelina gave a remarkable rendition of 'Gloomy Sunday' in the style of Billie Holiday. (the first of her videos to go viral) That performance may be the best example of her precocious ability to interpret music, the skill you most focused on in this video. How she renders these adult interpretations is certainly a mystery. Thoughts that I have had about that is that she is able to absorb stylistic patterns and how to apply them from the music she listens to. Perhaps, its comparable in some ways to Artificial Intelligence, where the program learns to extrapolate patterns without understanding what they mean. That is not to take this analogy too far because Angelina is a cognizant and feeling human being. But, an element of something AI like might help explain how Angelina can sing well beyond her years. Angelina is a prodigy on many dimensions. But, it her ability to interpret compositions is where she may be her most precocious. ... I find this performance of 'Stay' to be among her best from an interpretation standpoint, and one of her best performances using her low register. No vocal pyrotechnics, just understated but highly effective musicality and that unique Angelina tone. Brava.

Thanks to another great reaction to another incredible cover/ interpretation by Angelina. IMHO Angelina has been blessed with the GOD given gifts of not only a beautiful voice , but also the ability to emote the essence of each song she sings direct to our hearts & souls which allows us to also deeply FEEL her singing. To me this has been always evident even from her earliest performances at NGT. While I'm not that familiar with many of the original artists that she covers, I'm quite familiar with Adele's work. While both Adele & Angelina have beautiful voices, Angelina is far better at conveying (emoting) the feelings. A great example is Angelina's cover of A Million Years Ago. In fact - for a real comparison - check out the video that actually compares Angelina & Adele section by section throughout the song. Always enjoy your Angelina reactions. Thank you. Angelina was magnificent and, yes, her extraordinary vocal delivery and expressive presentation (while sitting in a chair!) sets her apart from others. Age? Yes, something to talk about but her artistry defies logic and she is, and has been for years, a complete artist, an accomplished artist and continues to master her voice as she grows. I love it when I hear the coaches saying stuff like that. "Oh, you have to live it first before you can sing it." So tell me, how many times had 9-year-old Michael Jackson fallen in love before he fronted the Jackson 5? She - and he - feels the song. They can hear the melody and the tone of the song emotionally and then emote it. Do you see what she is doing as she sings. She looks to her left. That's because she doesn't know the words to the song, and she's reading it off her phone. Whenever Ivan went to her house he had no idea what song they were going to do. The family would sit around, talk and at some point have dinner. Afterward AJ would become inspired and say "Lets do this song or that." They'd listen to it and create a simple arrangement for Ivan and when she was ready they'd record it. Most songs were done in 1 take. Ivan always blamed himself if it took 2. Hello Valerie :-) Thanks for another great reaction to Angelina. This was your 45th reaction to her. Thanks for the dedication! - NOW...... Angelina has 160 covers out. LOL So if you do ONE reaction per week, you have enough for more than two years. PLUS the content she has dropped before that time :-) You have reacted to MANY of my favorites, but there is ONE in particular that has eluded you, and that is her studio recording at ten years old, recording a demo to "I'm Still Holding Out For You". That one sits comfortably on most of her fans' top 5 list, and many have it on the very top. That's how amazing it is. At this stage, there is absolutely NO WAY that you're not going to react to it :-) That is something that you will not regret, 100% guaranteed. I'll give you the link here, and please don't mind the "leaked" tag in the description. Rumours have it that her mother found the lyrics toward the end of the song a little bit age inappropriate for a 10 year old girl to sing, and it was not released at the time. However, a few years later, one of the people from the recording studio dropped it on KZbin as "leaked", hence the tag. Luckily, no attempts were made to remove it, so it seems every party it totally fine with it being out. All of her fans agree that if this performance would have been released, it would have reached the charts instantly. Valerie, thanks for another wonderful reaction/analysis to Angelina Jordan. It is crazy how she can become the song she is singing and convey such tremendous emotion. Even crazier, she can do it usually on the first take with no practice. Alan Papier, on his channel, did interviews with Ivan Mendez (guitarist here) and with Egil Claussen (another guitarist who worked with Angelina). I have said so many times to reactors that the emotion of Angelina all has to do with how she perceives the song And you seem to be one of the only reactors that really gets what I was saying. I saw a video of Angelina in Brazil at the statue of Jesus and she was leaning over a wall singing "Fly Me To The Moon" to Jesus, It was like a prayer, not a love song but a prayer to Jesus these were the lyrics she sang "Fill my heart with song and let me sing forevermore, You are all I long for, All I worship and adore, In other words, please be true, In other words, I love you" She really has a different perspective than most.

Angelina learned this song as she sang it. She is reading the lyrics as she sings. Go figure. I’m sure she had listened to the song previously but she was not sure of all the words. Thus is constantly looking to her left to make sure. This was not a simple song.

I just watched this reaction again and realized: everything you said is true, of course (she conveys the emotion of a very adult song, makes it her own, "internalizes" the meaning, etc.). But did you realize that she'd never sung this before? This is a "one-and-done," single take recording. You can see this, as she's constantly looking to her left (off camera) to read the lyrics from her iPad (occasionally reaching over to scroll). It's not only amazing for a 12 year old girl to deliver such a beautiful performance, but it's just CRAZY to think that she can do it while SIGHT READING!

I have read that Angelina's musical instruction, from an early age, emphasized the process of 'decomposing' a song, breaking it down into all its constituent parts, then examining each part as to why it was chosen by the original composer/writer/artist and what could be changed about it. Angelina obviously took all this to heart, as she can produce a reinterpretation of this caliber on the fly, as she did in this recording with Ivan.

Dear Valerie. This is simply like one more masterpice from Angelina and Ivan. And your words for this performance is gold. I often think Angelina`s emotional capabilities is rather special among humans. Even unique, and possibly even like a part of her great talent. As you spoke of singers being uncomfortable with minimalist accompaniment, I remembered Angelina's performance for the "Judge's Cut" at Norway's Got Talent. Her a capella version of Billie Holiday's "I'm a Fool to Want You," at age 7 (or 8?) is on YT here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gonOn3-QedSFjLM. With no accompaniment at all, she was confident, comfortable, on pitch, consistent in tempo, and demonstrated her beautiful vibrato and amazing vocal control throughout. Ample evidence all by itself that she's a child prodigy, as I can think of few adults who could do what she does.

Dear Valery, AJ herself told once, in her mind she transforms the love of a grown woman into the love for her sister, mom or something like that. To realize, she reads the lyrics, interprets them to her feeling and sings them in seconds or less. We should also remember she is a 25 year old mind in the body of a 12 year old girl. She does not see herself as a child. Even when 9 yo, in the interview with Ann Lindmo, she spoke of other kids like a grown woman. I believe the idea of reinterpretation of this and other songs that are so far beyond Angelina's years is a far fetched explanation. You keep attempting to place reason and or science where normal rules can't be applied. This young lady is music. I've watched her for several years and can see clearly she has been here before. I wouldn't say she's "reinterpreting" it. I believe her superhuman empathy allows her to mindfully put herself within the story of the lyrics. She is able to feel within herself the pain, sorrow, happiness, and helplessness of break-ups, death, obsessive love, and even slavery by focusing her mind on the story to be told. You can see this in her facial expressions and hand movements as she sings. Her expressions appear to be quite natural and organic; not rehersed or acted out, as evidenced by this almost certainly being a first time/first take of Stay.
