Wow! I am a life long parishioner and resident of Saint Peter and Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church here in Wilmington C.A, where the Norbertine Sisters have their convent. I never knew what their days consisted of. I am happy to see them around town and around our parish. God bless our Norbertine Sisters and our Holy Norbertine Priests too! Viva Cristo Rey.

I believe I am in the beginning of discernment as if I was not so sick with autoimmune disease, I would find the live and happiness I have been looking for. My adult children would be stunned, but my mom would have already known. I grew up in a home that looked like a mini shrine anyways. 🌹

I would also like to become a nun, but: 1) do not want to convert to Catholicism; 2) my sight is failing as i age (I’ll admit to being past the age of 45), and talking with a mother superior via email, that would preclude me from fully participating. I serve by using my crochet skills (learned in childhood) to make things for charity.

I think it's better to go and see things for yourself instead of just believing what was said to you. Nor are you truly giving God a chance by just giving in like that. Calumny is a real thing.

How do the convents make money to buy food, pay billls, etc? Also, do the nuns have medical insurance, go for medical or dental visits?
@sandraatkins2539
@sandraatkins2539 3 жыл бұрын
Of course they go to the doctor, and they have medical and dental insurance. Some have outside jobs, and their entire salaries go into the the general fund for the upkeep of the entire community. They accept donations. and any sister wuth retirement income must also relinquish it to the convent. There are various way for each convent to earn income. It depends on various factors as well as on the particular order. Blessings

@@caelicunningham6877 I read Paul, but I have found nothing about nuns. Could you give an example?
@luciadahlquist5069
@luciadahlquist5069 2 жыл бұрын
@@arkadiuszdec2493 I think what he is referring to is 1 Corinthians chapter 7, although there are other places as well, in which Paul speaks extensively on the value of celibacy. Particularly in verse 34: "An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy in both body and spirit. A married woman, on the other hand, is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband." While Paul does clarify that marriage is not sinful, and is in fact the right choice for many, he also is very clear that celibacy is a higher calling that allows for a greater devotion to the Lord. To choose to sit at the feet of the Lord is, as Jesus says Himself, "the better part." So while the word "nun" does not exist in the bible, the idea of a woman consecrating herself to Jesus as a bride of Christ has been around since biblical times. I hope this clears things up!
@arkadiuszdec2493
@arkadiuszdec2493 2 жыл бұрын
@@luciadahlquist5069 Thanks for your response. I know about 1 Cor 7, and I agree that Paul speaks positively referring to abstaining from marriage, but I think, it's not the case. There are many single men or women who have not become a monk or a nun, but they still serve Christ and don't need any monastic life, or even some religious organisation. Celibacy is only one of many aspects of monastic life, but there are also lots of rules required to observe. Unfortunately, many of them are not commanded by God, but by men, by Catholic religion. Because of this, I think, nun or monk is not found in the Bible.
@luciadahlquist5069
@luciadahlquist5069 2 жыл бұрын
@@arkadiuszdec2493 Catholics actually also have plenty of single people who live and serve the church without being a monk or a nun! Some may be consecrated, such as consecrated virgins, while others have just decided to live a celibate life and serve Christ and others. The main vows that a monk or nun take all have biblical backing, chastity is one, as we just discussed, obedience to authority is another (for example, honor thy father and mother, and while your superiors in religious life aren't your biological or legal parents, they act with your best interest at heart like a parent and obedience is also a way to grow in humility by admitting you don't have all the answers. For the record, you aren't compelled to obey if they ask you to do something sinful), and the last is poverty, which Jesus repeatedly holds up as important (blessed are the poor in spirit, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven). Other aspects of religious life, such as living in community, are also biblical (Acts 4:32 says "The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common"). Other parts of the rule may not be exactly word for word in the bible, but are based on biblical principles and are there to help you grow in virtue. There are many things that we do as Christians today that aren't specifically in the bible, it doesn't say "use the internet to spread the Gospel" or "go to youth group on Wednesday nights" but we still do these things because they help us to grow in faith and learn to better serve the Lord. So no, nuns and monks aren't specifically in the Bible, but the principles that they are based on certainly are.

Why is this language always used? As if being a nun and being celibate makes you completely belonging to Christ and that you have a deeper relationship with him due to not being married? I'm not sure that's the best way to spin it....
@hamie7624
@hamie7624 2 жыл бұрын
Its true though. Marriage is an important vocation but the religious life is the highest vocation. They spend their entire lives in deep prayer and penance, so they will naturally have a deeper relationship with Christ.

The call to religious life is essentially devoting yourself entirely to God. It’s an extension of heaven but here on earth. If you are married, you cannot devote so many hours to prayer, especially not with kids
