The alto's voice is like dark velvet. She gets overlooked very often because sopranos get all the glory, and I love it when you hear her voice shine like this.

I've sung it many times in choirs and it's popular in the repertoire of most choirs globally. That is because it is a little masterpiece in 6 voicings. I sing the higher 1st tenor line which is exquisite. The very best section is the last few bars where the whole choir gets louder and then gets quieter and fades away evoking the setting sun, after all is a late afternoon piece.

I heard Voces8 and several other choirs sing this in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart at the end of a concert a few years ago. Magical!

In the end, after five or six choirs singing, the whole church, of which a siginificant part consists of the choristers (as well as many of the auditorium) sings this song. Over 400 people who can sing very well. Magical.

I agree with Flo Schwerdtfeger! One of my favorite pieces of choir music. If our vocal ensemble grows up from four to six, this will be one of the first pieces, we will singing. I will miss Eleonore in this ensemble. This setting is so perfect! I heard many, many brilliant recordings of "Abendlied", but this is the best of all.
