This song is a lament for the infant children of Bethlehem that King Herod ordered to be killed. It is meant to be the lullaby that the mother's would sing to the doomed children as Herods soldiers came near.

@@QalinaCom ermmm . . . Yes. Probably not a good idea. Hes8 now and not coping well in mainstream school as he has autism. We've had to go private at a cost of £1500 to get an official diagnosis otherwise 'the system' can take many months even years. Hopefully we've found a specialist school not to far away who will take him. This track brings me to tears

I agree to an extent but at the same time vibrato is the natural oscillation of the throat, so singing in straight tone can sometimes be unhealthy

@@nataliel6090 unfortunately not true.....many , especially opera singers use an most unnatural and first of all unmusical vibrato....if ever it has to be developed very carefully towards the end of a tone or a phrase...... Just listen to Emma Kirkby , Maria-Cristina Kiehr , Hana Blazikova or Maria Keohane and you know what i mean !

So truly beautiful. I also love the patience they choose to apply in the tempo of this version. Some versions are a little too rushed for my liking, and whilst they are beautiful, this approach works best. It brings out the best in a stunning composition.

I have literally just heard this for the first time while watching a Carol service on television. It is one of the most wonderful things I have ever heard in my life. So so sad and so so beautiful. It is very moving and performed so well by this group of singers.

Ich habe mir nicht alle 157 Kommentare durchgelesen ;0), also vlt steht das Folgende schon irgendwo: Dieses Lied ist ein englisches Volkslied, das Abschiedslied einer Mutter (vieler Mütter) von ihrem (ihren) toten Kind(ern). Es wurde traditionell in den 12-Nächten gesungen, also in der Zeit zwischen Weihnachten und dem 5.Januar. Dass es solche Wirkung entfaltet, liegt vlt daran, dass diese Klage etwas sehr Universelles hat.
