One of my favorite oratorios, with that irresistible "hook" in it that makes you long for more. How can JS Bach not be the greatest composer who ever was, or ever will be? Curiously, he isn't my favorite, but almost. Members of voces8 are top shelf, as usual, with quite an ensemble. Thank you all, again and again. The only (minor) downside here is that the taller vocalists are in front, blocking the shorter ones. Still, the sound is overpowering.

Too stuccato How then can joy flow and flower?
@barnabysmith96299 ай бұрын
Yes, this is the interesting debate about this chorus. For me the 'A' section is an exclamation of joy, signalled originally by the drum with its proclamatory gesture (staccato). The choir then picks up this theme as if shouting to the world about this amazing news. To be this joyful and excitable arguably warrants every quaver to be sung. I think It's a different feel to the Gloria from the B Minor Mass, which, although being the same time signature and with the same instrumentation, does perhaps have a more flowing dance-like quality to it, and opens with a trumpet theme not timpani. The drum here really is unusual in Bach's output, and for me gives us all the gestural information we need for the first part of this chorus; a motif which Bach then builds upon with the trumpet rhythms, which are like timpani hits. There is an obvious melisma (lasset) in the opening section, but even this is by its very nature excitable, and so I think shouldn't be too legato. By contrast the opening of the 'B' section, where the text talks about 'serving', is treated very differently by Bach with long melismas, and is given a much greater sense of line and legato in this performance, as though providing the gesture of bowing that the verb to 'serve' perhaps implies. As for your comment about flowering, even though the singing is marking each quaver, I do still believe there is a hierarchy within the phrase structures with the important words being clearly marked out; this to me is flowering. I also think we must remember that the cantata flows for another 20 minutes after this chorus ends, and we are really aiming at the final chorale text; I think it's one long progression, of which this is simply the opening statement. But hey, it's art, and it's subjective and that's the beauty of it. I'm pleased you have an opinion, it means the music reaches you, which as performers is our main goal :-)

Joy is not to be confused with haste, as the conductors of the last thirty years have too often done in this work, and I really love this peaceful tempo, which expresses so much better the serene joy of this oratorio. Excellent singing, as always, and very good orchestra. A bit more articulation and it would have been perfect.
@tillm24819 ай бұрын
it is lame…Bach is not a Prussian or English military exercise…it is Rockn Roll
@thomassavary57649 ай бұрын
@@tillm2481 No. Your comment reflects a totally anachronistic approach. Baroque music - Bach’s is no exception - is indeed based on dance, but not on the music of the twentieth century, on the dances of the time, a time when people travelled on foot or on horseback, before the acceleration brought about by the industrial revolution. The perception of speed and lowness is highly subjective and depends largely on the context in which we live. This does not mean that Baroque music should always be played slowly (there is, for example, a sonata by Scarlatti with the indication ‘Presto, quanto sia possibile’, ‘as fast as possible’, K 427), but that it is essential to know the context and habits of the period, including of course those of the music performance, if one wants to propose an interpretation that resembles as closely as possible what was heard at the time.
@tillm24819 ай бұрын
@@thomassavary5764 it is not only the tempo..it totally lacks compassion…no „Jauchzet, Frohlocket“…only an English puritan stick in the ass performance…just compare the recent performance in Hamburg Elbphilharmonie…also on youtube (Arte concert account)
