I am convinced that this is the greatest choral group of its generation. They are perfect. Their voices are perfect and they harmonize beautifully. They give each other’s voices incredible support, so that to listen to them is to be transported beyond time. Barnaby Smith is a complete genius. They are also abundantly generous in teaching choral music and voice to students throughout Europe. They deserve every fan and every accolade that can be given, especially in this day when auto tuned and pitch corrected voices are the norm. They demonstrate the beauty and the majesty of the natural human voice with all of the emotion it conveys and brings forth in the listener.

I’m a professional musician and educator with 65 years of life in music. This is the most beautiful music I have ever heard. It has a powerful influence on the state of mind and soul. It is the most powerful painting or sculpture ever created for the ears. No, Mozart couldn’t have transcribed the entire piece from one hearing. Not possible even for a musical genius such as him. His father, Leopold invented the myth to promote his son.
@charlesmurphy8677 Жыл бұрын
It's said he went twice and produced a version similar enough to impress the Vatican to reveal to him the original in its entirety.
@xabulidema9454 Жыл бұрын
Check out the video from "Early Music Sources" about "Falsobordone, the Miserere of Allegri ...". It is very interesting, and states also the the story with Mozart is perhaps just a myth. And Elam Rotem speaks here also about other "musicological errors" regarding this piece. But that doesn't change how beautifully Voces8 sings.
@irisjacobs1139 Жыл бұрын
Perhaps it's not impossible for Mozart to have transcribed the 'Miserere' after only one hearing. The music actually has only three distinct sections: the full choir, the small (concertina) choir and the baritone plainsong. The melodies in these three sections do not change throughout the piece, except the last phrase where the final chord becomes a major rather than a minor chord. Having said all that, the music is sublime, as are Voces8.
@xabulidema9454 Жыл бұрын
@@irisjacobs1139 The question ist not if Mozart could have been able to transcibe this piece. The question is if he did it. There is not any single source, scores, or a letter known about this. And also no contemporary sources from other people, who could have seen the transcription, do exist.

Barnaby Smith is the dynamic life force and center of the group, yet he modestly hides this, letting the sopranos capture most of the attention and praise, while he just smiles his engaging smile. His cultured vitality, endearing kindness, and vibrant countertenor are more apparent when you see them perform in person...he is truly a powerhouse. Before seeing them live, I also fell into the widespread habit of nearly considering everyone else as "supporting cast" for Andrea: this is to wrong these world talents terribly. Seeing them live makes one deeply realize each power and personality here. The soaring soprano is clearly the icing on the very-rich layered cake--undeniably exquisite and sublimely ornamental--but one doesn't want to eat just the icing, you know? Search in the entire cake for the sultanas, the rare spices--each individually savored as well as in perfect blend and balance--and the hidden gold token. : -) p.s. This recording is an absolute dream, surpassing angel-song into that of the archangels: eight of them, each stunningly beautiful.

I have heard this before - still quite beautiful. One thing I always appreciate with VOCES8 is the uniform, regal presentation of the music - posture, dress, setting, clear audio, and video. No namby-pamby or slouchy structure, but one which brings the best of the music. Also I’ve heard many “renowned” singers who may have great range and tone, but you can hardly recognize a word of what they are singing. VOCES8 actually move their tongues and enunciate! You can hear the musical text even as a group. Beautiful women, handsome men, well-dressed, polished - I hope they avoid musical casualism for these types of works Although I listen frequently to VOCES8, I feel like I am missing something when I don’t see them perform. So I am grateful for the videos/audio presentation, who focus on the performers at the appropriate times. Kudo’s to their production team - very refined. I can’t help but to support this group!

So, I wanted to let y'all know that I have been allowing my mind to roam back to the 70's, when I was in college, & I was blown away by the singing group they had at the University I just started to attend. Indiana. Beautiful pieces that were a little 're-worked' before they'd sing in front of very large audiences. I actually had the idea to try-out to sing with them. I had to sing in front of the director, & all thirteen of the singers. I sang two songs, (piano only) Carli Simon's, 'Coming Around Again,' & 'You're so Vain.' I was more than excited when they called me later that night to say, 'YES!' 👍🏻 (I never had much confidence in my singing voice.') The very first 'tour' we went on was after singing an old time favorite we practiced relentlessly on. 'Chattanooga Choo Choo.' It sounded so lovely! 🎵 I've been following your beautiful voices for a few years now. I'm wondering, since I'm older now, if y'all could, would possibly sing that song? It's definitely a very feel-good, summertime song. Thank ALL of you for always adding a smile to my face, as well as my day. ❤

Veni, vidi, vici!!! Pope Urban VIII, and Allegri himself would have blessed this, and the 8 mins belonging to Voces8! Thank you! Best recoding ever!

I have listened so many times, and will continue! The individual voices are so recognizable! The decants are stunning...as always!

The Allegri is my favorite choral piece, hands down and I am excited that Voces8 have recorded this gem! Thank you!

Probably my favorite aria above all. This performance is gorgeous ! Sung it a few years ago as the high soprano, i'd love to sing it again.

The "Miserere" is the the type of "support/assurance" that David is asking God for, after living a life of maliciousness to that point. He has changed his ways and asks for God's assurance of his salvation, in the same form of "support" that a Misericord would support a choral member while they sing in a standing position for the duration of a long piece of music in Church.

The architecture of the space, sound engineering, cinematography, and editing are just about as outstanding as the choir. Everything about this is the work of a master. Also that last chord will haunt me for life.
