This is the most beautiful cantata Bach ever composed, and it was almost lost forever.

Imagine what treasures we have almost certainly lost 😢 Maybe one day in heaven, God's court composer (who, of course, is Bach), will play a collection of his cantatas that were lost on Earth.

I actually feel great sadness for all humans who either can't comprehend the genius of Bach or those who don't have access to his music as it is displayed here. It's the very best humans have to offer and we should all revel in it.

I've tried. I've showed this kind of music to many people over the years that are just casual pop consumers. They either say it puts them to sleep, or that it's church music, or that you cant dance to it.... it really is sad and pathetic. The absolute height of human culture and it is vastly ignored by the drooling masses.

Pretentious people, both of you. Of course if someone has never in their life listened to classical and old music, they'll have to listen to it more than just once to really grasp it! No need to look down on them for it.

@@Jarl_Thidrandi not for lack of trying. I just never really got into modern music (my concept of modern is anything 1900s on, even things like late impressionism) however, I do find some enjoyment blind listening to some modern. When I blast baroque in my car, though, my friends universally beg me to turn it off 😢
@misterdiffiCULT1

@@theemutsenfabriekI don't personally look down on people if they don't enjoy baroque, but I do believe that they are missing out. I'm sure that my friends also believe similarly with me because I just really can't name anything modern except for a few things like that Britney Spears did or Billie eilish or even little big. But besides that, nothing. It often feels like two different cultures trying to come together to try to speak the same language but failing so bitterly to try to emulate how much one means to the other. 😅

I am beyond ecstatic! I sang this in college close to 40 yrs ago and could not remember the number or title of the cantata. All I could remember was this amazing page of music where a scale is sung through the chorus and taken up by the violins and that moment has haunted me my whole life. Today I went through a bag of old things from childhood that my brother was holding for me (I live in a NYC apartment...need I say more?) I found the program from the concert that we sang this in (thank God I keep everything!) and immediately looked up 150 here to listen. That moment at 6:24 played and I balled my eyes out. What a glorious piece and and what a gift to be reunited with it again!

From around 6:55 to 7:03, Bach reuses that moment as the ending in the Kyrie from the Mass in B minor.

@@js1757 You have a good ear! That is a Phrygian cadence, popular in the Baroque era, though not used nearly as often as the so-called authentic cadence (a dominant chord to a tonic chord). One of the more well-known uses of the Phrygian cadence is the second movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 in G major, BWV 1048. The cadence has to do with the Phrygian mode. I've always loved it since I learned it there!

I knew that Bach had a special place in the classical music realm, but I had no idea about how blessed and talented this man was, for being able to create such beautiful music out of impressive Bible passages. He truly was making music for THE King, no wonder his name was engraved in history, and his music is still being not only played today, but being studied by the best musicians worldwide. Also, I didn't know about voces8 and the Ancient music academy before, but highly apprecciate their Bach presentations now (and other Hymns they performed as well). Great job guys! Praise be to God, who gave you such talent, and I appreciate all the hard work involved in this as well, thank you for making it accessible, a real gift! Greetings from Brazil, have a blessed Sabbath. PS. Something tells me that small choirs sound much better than bigger ones. Have yet to come across something better than this, to change my mind.

if the music requires power, then a large choir. if clarity, then a smaller one. it's a shame classical music has been cast the way it has been over the years by bottom feeders in the media. but they have done the same to all intellectual pursuits, and maybe to reason itself

What a talented group of singers! Each individually and as an ensemble. And then with the historical instruments played so superbly by these instrumentalists, it’s hard to imagine this exquisite composition by J.S. Bach ever sounding better than what we are hearing here. I myself do not speak a word of German. But the way Bach weaves together the declamation of the text with the elements of instrumental music I practically believe I do understand what is being sung. I think maybe for the first time I experienced the beauty of the German language while watching this video.

This music and this ensemble are a dream come true-! Many thanks for featuring this jewel, Jeff -and thanks to the one suggesting it to you 👍 A bit short on time, I haven’t listened to all of it, but what an immersive, musical experience ⭐️ The big, fancy lute played here is a Baroque Theorbo, or an Archlute, with two necks and two sets of strings, one of them positioned outside the fingerboard, to be plucked open. This is a complicated creature, reaching the height of development at the late Baroque era, and subsequently dying out, replaced by harpsichords etc. It was ungainly and extremely hard to tune (or keep in tune) due to it using mainly pure gut strings. Imagine the nightmare of keeping 14 gut strings in tune. I struggle with the three I sometimes put on my violin ;) Due to its construction tho it had the most amazing range and resonance. Those long, open bass string reverberating along with whatever else was being played… the three sound holes. It was a highly developed amplification system of sorts. The sound is to die for-! The ensemble here, The Ancient Academy of Music -priceless ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Voces8 with their pure voices -also priceless ⭐️⭐️⭐️ My god, when those high notes hit at 2:10 and also at 5:29! Jonah Nilsson’s ‘Farewell’ comes to mind… This is live music at one of its best! Thanks again 🙏

According to my LP Deutsche Grammophon album cover notes, the 4th movement of Brahms' Symphony #4 in E minor is a passacaglia based on an 8-bar phrase from this cantata. I've listened but I don't hear those same chords over the recurring 8 bars. It must be an earlier cantata of them same title because this piece is listed as BWV 150 and the 4th symphony is BWV 98. All that said, this is a gorgeous, haunting composition. Bach truly was the master of them all!

i'm no musicologist, but at 11: 35 the last segment begins with an ascending bass line that repeats incessantly to the end, the passacaglia Brahms refers to. I came here looking for it, and found it! It was a challenge I suppose, turning a hypnotic repetition into the colorful brilliance of the Brahms symphony.

Enhorabuena.
