Here’s a translation of a moment (35 minutes in) that American viewers will find especially ironic and funny. Everding: People from Louisiana have fever in their blood. Did you carry your fever over to your audiences? Bumbry (perplexed): What was that again? Everding: The fever that you have in your blood as a Louisiana native. Bumbry (smiling like the Cheshire cat): But I come from Missouri, not Louisiana. Everding: Aha! Bumbry: There’s a big difference! Big difference! Europeans always make huge mistakes about this. Everding: Ok, I’ll revise it. [Of course the great African American diva from Louisiana was ... Shirley Verrett]

So regal in her manner - loved every moment of this! I had been mesmerized by her O Don Fatale in a CD that had the title of “Ten Greatest Mezzos” - one of the greatest singers in the 20th century.

@@barahona68 Spekulation, klar.

I have loved Grace Bumbry's voice since I first heard an l.p. of her singing in the Decca/London recording of Handel's Messiah (rec. 1961) I saw her in London singing Tosca in the 1970's and have many of her recordings including Don Carlos in which she gives an incredible performance of Princess Eboli.

If you know at original finale Tannhauser comes back to Venus at Gracy Bumbry you know why. ;) Btw: After premiere at Dresden censorship forced to change finale to a high gothic one. Wagner did but let music.
