Ashley Mazanhi as a trained and professional opera singer, it depends on the fach of the singer. I train vocalists as well and I have women much older than 40 still hitting those notes because they are light coloraturas and that’s their range! La Stupenda sang way beyond 40.

+Chris McLane the chord has a lot of dissonance. Not everything is going to be just major/minor chords. That would just get boring. The chord they sang has a lot of tension and wants to resolve. That's why it's even more satisfying whenever they do eventually resolve it.

I used to watch this every morning in bed with our little boy. He was 2 and mesmerized by it all. Somehow we stopped watching it (at age 3.5 ) when his little bother was born. Today I played it and my son (now 6!) came running, leaning his head on my chest. Holding my hand. He listened very carefully and squeezed my hand with kate’s beautiful high notes. When it stopped he turned, smiled and went back to play with his thomas trains. No words. Magic 😊

For an experienced (trained) singer it's not such a long note. One of my singing teachers insisted on me learning to hold notes for twice that length at the volume, so even though I'm asthmatic i still have plenty left in the tank at the end of this song. Just a case of breathing properly, supporting correctly from the diaphragm, developing a good clear tone (breathy tones have their place, but for a note that long breathy = wasted air!) And I also find it helps to imagine pulling the note (or run of notes) in towards me, rather than pushing it out. Don't know why it works but it really does!

Yes, the high soprano definitely shines in this medley, but it's all the others singing in the background that allow her to rise above as she does. That's the beauty of ensemble singing--everyone is important and necessary. It is so beautiful I have to listen to it alone so I can cry.

Out of interest, Kate belted an F#6 at the end. AN F#6. After a big coda so without having been able to take a breath for a while (assuming that it wasn't part of the production of the track that two parts were stitched together at the end to allow Kate that breath which most humans would have needed, but I like to believe this wasn't how it was done), and she absolutely nailed it. For reference, the average soprano is generally expected to have a range extending up to A5, so say if you are writing a piece for an ordinary mixed choir you would generally want the highest soprano note you could write to be around an E5 or F5 or at most an A5. an F#6 is a full major sixth (not far off an octave) above that top A5. That is ridiculous. Amazing work, Kate (and everyone else, of course).

@@justinekay7461 Justine! How lovely to hear from you :) how are you? I miss it too. This is one of the best a cappella pieces I've heard but it makes me think of all the great things we did too. If I remember correctly the highest note I made sops 1 sing was the occasional super-high B in my arrangement of Feeling Good. For reference that was a B5 and it was really tough for even the highest voices to hit that note, like I probably should have found a different way of writing it (lol) and it only came up as a quick note only occasionally. You all made it sound great anyway :) Compare that with this, where she sings a super long section and then without a breath goes up and holds for ages an F#6, which is more than half an octave up from B5. Pretty crazy!

I wouldn't use 'belt' to describe it because that is normally in lower registers. In opera, eg queen on the night It is more of a fully supported head voice. To be fair ,you either can, or can't hit notes like this, and it is amazing to hear those who can!

Voctave has got to be the most perfectly balanced and angelic sounding a cappella group in existence. Many great vocal groups. But their sound is one of a kind. Wow!
