Hearing Iskall talk about how unfair and cruel the punishment for dying is reminds me that I stopped playing my previous minecraft world when I died, and lost a substantial amount of valuable gear. For my under developed single player world, that represented multiple hours of grinding, and it completely stopped my progress on my current project. It was so punishing that I haven't gone back to minecraft since then. Dropping item on death definitely needs a rework. Lots of recent updates have been all about exploration, yet dropping all your items on death is a great way to encourage players to avoid traveling to new unexplored areas, since it makes recovering your items effectively impossible.

I don't like that the first ghost despawns when you get killed again, tho. Because then everything is gone. In some boss rooms, you have to trigger the boss fight to get to your ghost. But getting a new ghost every time you die could cause problems in a death loop. It would be better if there were only one ghost, and the items added up every time you died. You would get it all back once you killed the ghost.

16:04 talking about it makes me realize that thats why some people dont take risks in their own worlds in minecraft, because the consequences can be so punishing. To grind for enough diamonds to make armor and weapons in itself is dangerous and can be extremely time consuming. Either via villagers or mining. And then risking it all to go to the nether or to the end? Sometimes it doesn't feel worth the risk when you put so much hard work into it. It keeps peoples options limited bc of items de-spawning and the immediate time limit which in the long term can cause more deaths bc of panic and rushing to get those items back.

I think it’s a good idea. I always play with keepinventory on because I hate losing all my items. I’m rubbish at survival Minecraft, I die to mobs on easy mode all the time and it’s massive pain to try and fight off the mobs with 0 gear just to get my stuff back. I enjoy the game so much more with keep inventory on, but for players that aren’t terrible, having some sort of way to get their stuff back without a time limit would be a great thing. When gear is such a long grind, players shouldn’t have to do it all again because they misclicked a water bucket clutch for example
@bengoodwin21419 ай бұрын
For the death mechanic thing, I think it would make sense if the mob was using the exact same equipment you had in your inventory (and equips the best stuff) This would already add a small permanent punishment in that fighting it takes some durability from the armor.

I faced the same problem when I was running a server for friends; it was so demoralizing when they lost items to dying that it'd ruin a night or just discourage them from playing. We didn't have the infrastructure of a server like Hermitcraft where we could just buy new items; and though I made a trading hall and could get new gear in about half an hour, they often had more of a sentimental attachment to the gear they had crafted and grinded for enchantments and the like. We tried Keep Inventory, and while it took away the fear of dying, it also took away any fear of danger. People were jumping off cliffs to teleport back to their bases after mining. I noticed a lack of interest in improving or trying challenging things, because death was so cheap it just meant anything could require a grind rather than skill. We also tried a graves mod, but it had the issue of sometimes deleting blocks or outright not spawning sometimes, and really did clog up areas where you died over and over trying to reach the grave. The solution I found worked best was a combination of Keep Inventory mods. I set it up so that it would remove two thirds of your gear's durability (100% -> 33% -> 11% -> 7% -> 4%) and halve the number of items the stacks you were carrying (the rest dropped where you died). If your equipment was at/below 4% when you died they broke and were lost. If you only had one of a stackable item it would drop, as would certain NSIs you could configure (potions, books, boats, that kind of thing). It made death something to avoid, but not something that ruined your night: and you still had to make the death run to get half your stuff back if you didn't have them in a shulker or bundle. You only had to repair your gear rather than replace it unless you neglected them, and you still lost your levels so XP farms remained relevant. It was perhaps a little too convenient in my opinion, but my friends enjoyed it, so it was a success.

Same here. It’s especially punishing on bedrock because you’ll die to loading errors and glitches. I can’t actually go in and out of the nether in survival mode, I have to quickly switch to creative so the game doesn’t either glitch me into a block and suffocate me while the loading screen’s still up, or spawn a hostile mob on me, again while the loading screen is still up. I made the mistake of going to the nether for the first time in a new world while still in survival mode, because I had a creeper spawn right next to me, blow me up, and then have all my items dropped into a lava lake that was just a few blocks of netherrack below the portal. I didn’t play in that world again for months.

This ghost idea is SO COOL I would love to have that mod instead of just a grave or nothing. I like the idea of it scaling with your armour and gear level but I think there's another accumulative attribute you could use instead... _the game score when you die_ . You could make it pretty transferrable to the stats of the ghost and it increases things like strength, speed, and health (I don't think it should have armour points tho) and instead of trying to match long term players or people that don't die often with something more challenging than just end game gear with no further progression afterwards. For example, when you die and it gives you a score of 51, you get a pretty easy ghost to kill because you haven't been in the world as long/haven't been able to achieve more in the game. But when you die and get a score of 244 that means it falls within a second tier of strength, but keeps the first tier speed and health (make the range something like 201-299 or something) which means people that die more often get a lower score and the chance of multiple ghosts makes it more like trying to find the "true" one that's harder to kill and gives you your stuff back. This would make something like the echo compass more of a tracker than a glorified lodestone and also gives another reason to make the stupid thing in the first place, maybe if you ring a bell whilst holding it the ghost glows when in range like raid mobs? Sorry for the thesis, you pitched an amazing idea, I can't wait to see if anyone can take this further XD
@TheParasiteDk9 ай бұрын
The whole items-despawn-on-death talk is the reason we use the corpse mod, in the modpack I play with, as it leaves all your stuff on a corpse where you died. If you die in the end to the void, you need to find the spot and go down to y-level 0 to get it back, but it's there, and if you die in lava, you need to remove the lava to get to your corpse, so it's still punishing to die, but not rage-quit punishing.

You go back to the OG hub region and... there's no way you're getting back before anything despawns, if the person can even find their way back. If there was just a death marker/grave or hell, even a way to re-anchor your main spawn... and if people want to argue "back in the day" well then back in the day there were no elytra or nether portals or even horses you could ride... so... Tbh I am 100% on-board with having the Ghost Mob idea. I'd like to suggest some additional ideas for it: 1: You suggested the Ghost Mob being more hostile or dangerous depending on how strong your gear or weapons were. Additionally, (And I might be overlooking something here), I think the Ghost Mob should change its attacking behavior based on how you died. Like, for example, if another mob killed you, it'd inherit the offensive properties of that mob as well. Or if your death was environmental like falling from a high place, the Ghost Mob would hover above you out of reach like a Wither so you'd need to build up to it or shoot it. Y'know, something like that! I might be overlooking a reason why that can't work, but I think it's an interesting concept. 2: I feel there is a mutual understanding that the Ghost wouldn't pathfind too far away from where you died, like it'd only float around in a radius around your death point. But, just in case it isn't, there's that. 3: This one's for the lore-heads; maybe it could bear a similar appearance to an Allay or a Vex? Kinda like a third floating spirit-type mob? Or maybe its actual NAME would be called the "Spectator" or something? Kinda corny, but it gives this idea that these are what Hardcore players become when they die, since they can only spectate their worlds after the fact? 4: What happens if you die to the Ghost? Does another one spawn, or do your items also get absorbed by the same Ghost? Maybe it doubles in power or something with every death of yours to discourage just running in, getting a few hits in, dying, running back in, etc. until it's dead. My ideas aside, I genuinely hope someone at Mojang watches this video and considers this concept. It's a genius fix to what can be a frustrating mechanic

I think iskall forgets that Minecraft is more than a decade old and was the contributing factor for a lot of the survival mechanics he is talking about. “Have a tombstone” is the same as dropping your backpack in multiple survival games and is pretty much a staple, “fighting a ghost to get your body back” is something hollow knight explored as well as other 2d games to spice up the checkpoint mechanic. All of these games came out after survival Minecraft and were influenced by by it. It’s not Minecraft’s fault it’s 15 years old and has 2 base code versions that are nearly unchanged and shaped the world of gaming as we know it

I love the idea, Iskall. I usually think that the grave mod is the right amount of punishing (because you still have to go to the place, and it's dangerous sometimes), but having to fight a mob would be so much fun! as a casual player, losing everything is really punishing, so in vanilla I usually keep my good tools in the ender chest, and go caving with an iron pick. and Pearl gave the perfect argument: when caving in deepslate is impossible to come back in time to get the items back.

This death mod has my head spinning, I have so many ideas! I think the ghost should just be using your equipment when summoned, because it's your ghost. If it uses an item, like a potion or food, or breaks your equipment, you don't get it back, making another aspect to managing durability. (It can't place blocks; maybe another gamerule?) I also think we should be able to pick up and move the urn, (or at least makea gamerule for it), and fight it where we want. (You'd still have to fight it to get your items back.) It can only be damaged by player attacks, (any player, for adding a social aspect to it). You could intentionally die with gear on multiple times, and have a hoard of ghosts! (Command Block shenanigans for maps?)

There is one more addition that could be used in dying: Not only is it annoying to get your stuff back before dying it is possible to just lose where you died. Like what if you was flying to explore and splatted against a wall with an Elytra? I'd love to see something point to where you last died. That could work with that ghost suggestion. The marking would vanish after you kill the ghost or if you choose to clear it on your own.

A Scythe or a Scikle with a Stick, where you use the first one to attack in wide area or use it in conjuction to Execute for even greater Damage and the Stick for pirmary attack. ⚒️ we can have soooo many different combos.

15:10 i have a mod that, when you die, you get a grave and chest where you died and all of your items are in there. It's a life saver and is much more fun than just having keep inventory

One of the harder modpacks like RLCraft (I don't think it was that one but I get them confused) has it where when you die, you have a grave, and a zombie you appears with your equipment. So that netherite sword with sharpness and fire aspect II? The zombie has that, and you have to kill it to get it back.

Make an enchantment that mirrors Curse of Binding. That attaches the gear to your soul and when you die it spawns the ghost wearing all the gear that has that enchantment. Adds a "grind" to make it balanced and adds Lore.

Best place to cave for diamonds is in underwater caves. Diamonds have a higher chance of generating without any air blocks around them, so underwater the have a higher chance to generate even though it's stilkl easy to see them in the walls

I definitely agree about the death thing. I either won't play a modpack if it doesn't have a grave mod, or if I'm only playing single-player, I'll add one. If I'm playing Vanilla, I do use keep inventory, but it's only because worrying about stuff despawning is just annoying and tedious
@Blackwings45LL8 ай бұрын
I completely agree, I usually play with keep inventory to avoid losing my stuff, but it feels so cheaty then. I want to work for my stuff, but the anxiety of only having 5 minutes to get my stuff sucks. Ghost or gravestone would be so nice to have in vanilla
@Blank3tM0nst3r9 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right about the death mechanic. Runescape is a 25 year old game where if you died, your items could be looted by other players after 1 minute, and despawn after 3. Thankfully, they realized how bad that felt to play with, and so there is a gravestone mechanic where if ypu get back to your gear it was fully recovered, and if not, you visit Death to pay a small fee to recover it.

19:20 In the "Project Zomboid" when you die and turn into a zombie, you create a new character to spawn into the same world and you can find your zombie past wandering around where you have died, you can kill it and take your stuff back.

one of my favorite mods puts the death coords in the chat (the benefit). maybe the balance is that your items go into a chest and gets surrounded by 5 blocks of obsidian. :D

Why I like death systems used in many survival RPG games, like Conan Exiles. You die, you drop everything into a bag/headstone/body. You do usually have a time limit to go retrieve it around 10+ mins. In PVP instances they are usually lootable. Its a fairly level headed system of punishment. In minecraft though, if you spent 40 mins exploring a cave or nether only to die and the container dropped was timed for even 20 mins it would still make little difference in trying to recover. Best move would be a static lootable container with no timer.

Valheim's mechanics for publishing death are good imo. Leave behind a grave so items aren't lost forever, but the trek to get them back can be just as risky depending on where, how, and when you died last due to the biomes, mobs, and ship travel.

In Noita, a roguelike where you craft magic wands and do some other shenanigans, in some of your runs you can meet ghosts which have wands you made in previous runs. The only problem is that sometimes those ghosts can have really OP wands which can easily kill you lol.

I came across this issue myself in singleplayer. Keeping inventory ruins the challenge but losing your items within 5 minutes isnt fun especially early game. The vanilla tweaks gravestone is probably the best solution to it at the moment.

I feel like the reason for why the noodle caves(tiny caves) were added is for 1. Variety(of course) but also 2. At least judging by the Minecraft subreddit there is a surprising amount of people who do not like the big caves. Somehow.

In a similar vein I hate the idea that if your item's durability reaches 0 they're just gone. They made the whole alternative system for the elytra to stick around but be unusable until repaired but it's the only thing with it. Also i think item despawning in general needs a rework, in so many games it only despawns items when there's enough to be a problem, yet Minecraft doesn't despawn them even if there is a problem (I.E. a farm that's out of storage).

I think the ghost idea is really good, but what about it being optional? If you want to race to get your items back after dying you can do that. But if you want to challenge the ghost (because it is fun or you died in the void or cant be bothered to travel a long distance) you need to craft some sort of item and summon the ghost? I love exploring so collecting summoning items could be a fun thing to do too :)

There was a game called ZombiU or something. When you died you respawned as a new character and you could find your zombified character equipped with all your items and kill him. This would fit perfect given that MC zombies are already just dead Steve's.

Yesterday I rode down a waterfall while caving and while jumping out of the water stream I landed near a Creeper in pitch black darkness. It pushed me off a cliff, straight into a pool of lava. I lost all upgrades I did in the week before, all supplies I made to go caving. I just respawned at my bed at cave entrance, saved the game and closed the game. What a brutal punishment for zero gameplay error.

I like the spawning idea. Funniest death I ever had was in the Nether. I had to take my armor back from the four piglins who took my stuff. It was a good alternative to finding the goodies gone.

I like the death system of Stardew Valley. Where you lose some items and money, except your tools, cant ever lose those, and can pay money for someone to retrieve one of your lost items. Also since you only save the game by sleeping, you can always choose to reset the day if you lost something too important

With or without your suggestions the only punishment for dying in minecraft is time, it may as well ban you from playing for a few hours, the punishment would be the same. All keep inventory does is save time for those of us who want to play minecraft instead of getting stuck in death loops and being forced to restart our days or weeks progress.

I started playing ice hockey last year in my mid-20s, in the same kind of adult program that the Tangos did, and it's changed me so much for the better. I had run on a track team as a kid but didn't enjoy it and quit early. The new perspective on sports and team play is so uplifting. I told the Tangos about this when they were on a stream together and it made them so happy haha

I think a good option would be to make graves or ghosts into a totem you carry, so it's something that you can control. It would be fairly cheap/ easy to obtain, but still a resource you would use up. I also think that totems should have their own slot, so they can display floating around a player instead of taking up a hand slot. That way they are visible to other players (which is the only reason they require you to hold them) and are a lot less cumbersome to make use of.
