Created as an updated video of Barney's voice changes throughout the years, I take a look at the vocal evolution of the character as I compare the voices of all of Barney's official voice actors over time, including Bob West, David Franks, Duncan Brannan, Tim Dever, and Dean Wendt.

Absolutely steve! I mean don't get me wrong, I'm all for giving other actors a shot but none of these other guys in my opinion came close to matching the pure magic Bob had in his voice. The man pretty much IS Barney in my view.

His performance involved a lot more than just the voice (voice acting is actually hard work if you do it right - you have to evoke all the feeling of a performance with just your vocal cords). Plus, Bob is a wonderfully funny and nice guy (again, not saying the others weren't!)

You seem to know Barney pretty well from a writing standpoint, so tell me, if Barney could get mad, then what would he actually be mad about, and if Barney could be sad, what are some of the things that would make him sad? I know you couldn’t necessarily explore these things since the show was targeted towards toddlers. And also, what would be Barney’s weakness/Achilles Heel? Superman has Kryptonite, Frosty’s is hot temperature, what is Barney’s?

Let's Go To The Zoo For those home videos I just listed, I really wish Lyrick Studios had just let Duncan Brannan voice Barney alone, without Tim Dever. Both singing AND dialogue wise. Same goes for Barney's Zoo Tour. I also wish they had him voice Barney in the 2001 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade performance, instead of Dean Wendt.

Bob West is perfection. Duncan was great, almost perfect imitation...makes me wonder how Bob West's Chuck E. Cheese would sound (they've both played several of the same characters at CEC at various times...but never Chuck E., only Duncan did Chuck E.) Tim Dever was good, but his Barney was kinda bland in tone. Dean Wendt's early Barney when he was imitating the others was really good...even when he started to let a little nasal come through it was pretty good. When he started going full nasal and made Barney an extension of his normal voice basically, it was aight. But as his run with the character went on, he just seems to have gotten lazier and lazier(he basically stopped voice acting and started talking as himself) and Barney became much less cheerful and exciting. It wasn't awful but it did change the personality and feel of the character, which I don't think needed an overhaul. David Franks seems like he was a good backup. The first unknown guy tried, sounded like they were into it, but unfortunately didn't sound enough like Barney. The last guy was just pure ass and sounded like he was in the studio just talking.

I'm a bit conflicted about Dean Wendt's Barney voice on one hand I do give him credit for doing his own thing with the role instead of trying to be a carbon copy of Bob West's Barney but on the other hand I still have a soft spot for Bob's Barney voice.(from the PBS show) and found the dramatic change in the voice a bit jarring

To be honest, Dean was decent in seasons 7-8. Sure, his voice is a little nasally but was still deep and not annoying. However once season 9 started, his became more nasally and high pitched. Which sometimes grates my ears. The crazy thing is that I grew up with the HIT episodes.

I think the more voice actors come to know who this character is, I realize that it doesn't have to be an imitation of the character. Some of them have completely different takes on the role. My most favorite I am going to say, is Bob West's voice. This is because his voice has been so developed over the years that it is one of the most notable voices growing up. He identified as the character we know him to be, as jolly, funny, and cheerful. Duncan and Tim"s voices were quite similar to each other but they were so different in pitch. I can see why Dean's sounds way different and nasal and that is the reason as to why he chose to make the character his own, because he didn't want to do an imitation. Who is your favorite barney voice, plus on the side note, who is your favorite barney costume performer? Mine is David Joyner.

I was born at a weird time for voices. I'm an '02 baby. Bob West his hands down my favorite. His episodes were still airing on PBS by the time I was born and there's a certain magic in his voice that captivated me. David Joyner is my favorite costume performer because of the energy and how he defined the character's mannerisms. My other favorites would be Rick Starkweather, Patrick McAlister, and a gentleman named Aronzo who performs at the Universal attraction.

I found pictures of the PBS Kids Sprout launch event. Just look on Flickr. Album Title: Sprout launch party. The reason why Bob West voiced Barney at the Sprout launch event because Dean Wendt (the voice of Barney at the time) was unavailable for an unknown reason. Maybe Wendt had a cold, or maybe it was due to a family/personal matter, or maybe Dean was busy filming an episode or a video. I guess we'll never know. Note: Carey Stinson was in the costume during the launch event.

Duncan Brannan voiced Chuck E Cheese from 1993 until 2012 but his voice as Chuck E changed in 1997 due to him impersonating the previous voice actor Scott Wilson. Bob West also voiced Chuck E before Scott did and I believe he was the first person to voice Chuck E Cheese.

I seem to vaguely remember hearing a snippet of Barney years after I stopped watching and thinking a girl voiced him. That wasn't the case but I can see how I thought that since the later voice definitely became a lot higher pitched than what I expected from the character. The original voice from Bob West is still the best. The original Backyard Gang home videos were always my favorites too, it's hard to find plushies from that era that resemble the ones on the show at the time.

Is it concerning that I can’t pick out which Barney was MY Barney… they all sound like the Barney I knew so I cannot credit just one of them for being in my childhood. This is suppose that’s the point and it means they did a good job finding enough people who can do the voice. People should know that like late Muppeteer Caroll Spinney, Bob West was supposed to be in the costume also. So basically like Caroll, Bob was gonna be inside being the puppeteer!! But. Bob was to tall, so that’s why they had to get 2 separate people.

Bob West was very great at playing the voice of Barney. The other actors did okay, but Dean Wendt didn’t do very good at all. He made Barney sound like he got back from Alcoholics Anonymous. I bet the kids were confused to hear Barney’s voice changed. I’m still watching the old classic Barney videos.

I! can remember when the first Barney Dolls came out in stores. THEY had a Black Friday sale the day after Thanksgiving, and a lot of people created stampedes outside of Walmart and other stores just to buy them. A few of the employees got killed in the mobs, because they couldn't get out of the way fast enough. The poor employees had their lives taken, because of the ✊👊🤛🤜FIST FIGHTS people had over the Barney Dolls

I think I know how Duncan got the role of Barney. If you don’t know Duncan, and bob were a part of the Chuck E. Cheese voice cast around the 1990’s. Bob probably said that he would be retiring from Barney and Because bob knew Duncan, he got the role

Cmon *GIVE respect* to the voice actors at least they gave *Barney a great voice!* And also *Dean* is great but he is nasally, but he gave barney a bit *cheerful, joyful, happy and friendly dinosaur!* But still *Bob West* is The BEST! And also *Dever* may gave *Barney a low voice,* he is a bit similar to *Bob West* but not close! And the reason why he gave Barney a low voice is because he tried to copy *Bob* but he can only do the *low version* of it!

Do to the age gaps with my siblings we all kinda watched it together , my big brother Allan was too 'old' for barney but I was young enough to like it , so we watched it. By the time I was a preteen , my younger sister loved it and we just kinda ended up watching it, this sister is now a teenager so she 'shouldn't ' be interested in barney but my daughter loves barney and at least my baby neise is almost 2 years younger than my daughter so they'll kinda be in the same age bracket for a lot of things .
