Follow graffiti artist GATS as he risks his safety and anonymity to paint a poem across the East Bay. The final line proclaiming "The City Is Ours" is completed at a community block party, an apt setting to celebrate how street art can be used to make political statements and enrich the culture of a city.

Gats you keep doing what your doing. I hope two years on your still making these great pieces. Graffiti is something special in the right hands... A tool of powerful protest, emotion, anger. But it must be used in the right way. Don't abuse the power we have artists. People will look at ART and see a picture. People look at graffiti and they see a message. Peace.

how is painting on private property getting back at the system? you are vandalizing someone's property that is living the "struggle" just like these middle class hipsters. seems like hypocrisy to me. i like this dudes fonts and characters but the message, meh.

Just if any one wants this typed up like I did... Born into law. Tempered to adhere. Mechanized Rusting Marking Time. Clinging Toxic at Concrete. This Poem is in its Cage. Each Letter is a Fence. Bleeding the Sum of my Conditioning. To the border of yours. A Sun’s Wealth in a Fortress. The Weight of Excess Rests on Fragile Clouds. Laughing at Your Pitiful Subway Fare. Glass shatters. Descending Shards Pin Skin to The Bounty of Dismantling. The city is ours.

Oakland is the center of the art universe right now, only it's the people's art, not ivory towers and institutions. Graffiti and street art everywhere, industrial sculpture at warehouses like American Steel, bands playing in houses 7 nights a week- this is art from the ground up, for people, by the people. GATS is on the leading edge of this. It's a privilege to live here, and I hope he keeps making our city a richer place through his vision and actions.

yeah i know, and you're right!, but you know..in that case, are we defacing the great structure of nature with our buildings and billboards? i mean it's so relative one thing to another that is really hard to say or judge something, it's just about perspectives, and sometimes perspectives collide in some point, we all are bad in some way, and good in another... there's no grand point, just actions, just people that want their voice to be heard, like you and me, but in a diferents ways..

There's nothing wrong with freedom of expression, but there is something wrong when you step on someone else's. That was someone's business that he put his art on. They probably worked harder for it than the effort it took for him to get up there and deface it. You wanna be respected, you should show respect, and I see nothing but disrespect when I see that. Leave your art for the abandoned buildings that has no one left to actually care about it.

this is single handedly the sicket shit ever. i loved watching every minute and i enjoy the fact that it ended with "the city is ours." a crazy good idea and i praise you guys for this! people need to hear the truth in the world we live in! awesome, awesome video. will remember this forever. thank you so much for your contribution to society and the city.

I don't see how watching the other videos (which I have) validates his actions. The point is to be against the system, not against someone trying to make a living. Not to mention the fact that he also lived there. So he defaced someone's business and home. What message is being sent? Perhaps I'm missing the grand point, but for now I don't see it. :/
