In VOB Album - RETAS... This Instrumental track named by VOB as KAWANI meaning BRAVE. The inspiration from West Java Traditional Sundanese Instrumental Music including flute, iron bells, drums, bamboo thingy etc. VOB improvise from Traditional Sundanese Gamelan Instrumental to rock funk thrashy music mixed mesh genre's.

Hello Tim and thanks for more VOB! As it's his request, I'll let Robert talk about the song (thanks Robert!). One point though, it's done in pentatonic scale, very common in Sundanese/Indonesian music. Good call on Steve Harris! Although Widi doesn't list him as an influence (usually she lists Flea and occasionally John Myung), she does have Iron Maiden on her Spotify playlist (along with Muse and Tool, among others)! I definitely agree about the juxtaposition of their appearance vs their sound. It's make it hit so much harder, because it's so unexpected. Same with me for Hanabie, seeing them for the first time, you'd never expect them to sound like that!

Tim mentioned earlier that he really enjoyed good bass parts, so I picked this one out for him. I'm guessing from his reaction that it was a hit. (Nice to see you again bw - seems like you're all over the VoB reactions, with way more information than I've been able to dig up) Yes, you can find this track listed as Sundanese Pentatonic Instrumental in a few places on yt - it's called Kawani on VoB's album Retas. I've listened to some Sundanese gamelan music to try to understand the connection. . .but I can't really hear a direct connection. One similarity that you _do_ hear is the interlocking rhythms, but they come out very differently in a rock trio. I've looked around for examples of gamelan music and the following is one of my favorites - search youtube for: Indonesian gamelan medley from Java, Sunda and Bali. The Sundanese part goes from 2:53 to 5:51. It has a nice accelerando in it that makes it a little zippier than a lot of Sundanese gamelan tunes. Interesting (or not 😊) bit of music nerd trivia - pentatonic scales (with a flat fifth added) are very common in rock music. In fact, the Ningen Isu piece you listened to recently (Heartless Scat) is mostly in that scale (according to a dude on yt who analyzes guitar parts). Which makes it very close to the pentatonic scale that's common in Japanese and Korean music (you may have heard the Korean tune Arirang while watching the Olympics). To hear the rock/blues scale search wikipedia for: hexatonic blues scale. I figure the slightly tweaked pentatonic scale is a natural for Ningen Isu. The Indonesian pentatonic scale(s) is(are) on a slightly different set of intervals from the ones used in Western music (you'll probably notice that if you listen to the gamelan music I referred to above). Because VoB are playing fretted instruments, they're kinda stuck with the Western scale. But they still do a good job of making it sound a bit exotic.

I couldn't tell you which one Kawani is based on.
