The March of the Bangers continues! The girls aren't afraid to call out the hypocrites - good for them! First studio version I've heard from them in a while (probably since my very first reaction); I do kind of miss their live presence :-)

Miss Widi bass as always busy "mumbling" layering in between Marsya riffs / vocals and Sitti magical drumming patterns ... to keep the V.O.B music busy while only have 3 instruments ... Widi bass just act like rhythm guitar to Marsya 😊... great composition by talented 3 young musicians ❤

There's a lyric video of this which is more than just the tune with words - there's some really interesting artwork (some of which echoes the album cover) and animation on it. I highly recommend it (although it shouldn't change how you feel about the music, at least not too much) (tl;dr, as usual. I need some better Brembos) As anatri123 mentions, there are a number of versions of this tune out there. It goes back to at least 2017. The first VoB tune I heard (and saw) was a video of an early performance of this - it went out with their first wave of worldwide publicity (the Guardian, NYT, NPR and a few others). That version had Marsya and Sitti sounding very thrashy and Widi sounding very funky. It's not a great recording and has since been taken down (although remnants of it remain on Instagram - I still go back and listen occasionally, for nostalgia's sake). As usual, it's very interesting to hear the evolution of the piece, as it is with any VoB work that goes back a few years. For all the changes, I think the lyrics and (vocal) melody have stayed basically the same over the years and (if I'm remembering correctly) it's only the bass, drum and guitar parts that have changed. I hadn't connected the artwork at the bottom mid left and mid right with this particular tune, but it's a very good fit, a great depiction of contradiction and hypocrisy. (BTW, the t-shirt from the American tour has the Retas cover artwork on the front, in monochrome gold on black - very classy). The image on the left looks like a mashup of the major religions that co-exist in Indonesia - Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. The wheel behind the figure is definitely the Buddhist 8-fold path. The eyes in funny places are common in Hindu and some Buddhist (esp. Tibetan?) art. The figure has aspects of Kali and Mahakala, but the color comes from images of Satan/Iblis in the Abrahamic religions. Never really thought that much about it until your comment had me looking at it again. The juxtaposition of the two images has me thinking (again for the first time) that it might be connected with a story about Rabia, a story that Marsya, Sitti and Widi would almost certainly know. Rabia was an early female saint in Sufi Islam (I suspect that Sufism has influenced the role of women in Islam in Indonesia, but that's just a guess. Maybe someone out there will know more). Any road up, here's the story (as told by the Sufi poet Attar, in translation): Holding a torch in one hand a bucket of water in the other, she ran through the city of Basra. When she was stopped and asked what she was doing, she replied: “I want to put out the fires of Hell, and burn down the rewards of Paradise. They block the way to God. I do not want to worship from fear of punishment or for the promise of reward, but simply for the love of God”. (rather different from what's depicted, but the artwork, in it's own way, seeks to destroy the conventional images of heaven and hell by mixing up and mashing up their emissaries. It could be a reach. YMMV)

Hello Robert, right you are! The album features a stunning Sufism-inspired cover artwork illustrated by the prodigious Indonesian artist Dede Cipon. “Essentially, I wanted to illustrate the conflict surrounding stigmas, judgmental behaviour, and the fundamental values that would continuously change from time to time because they are always taken at face value. What intrigues me is that despite the existence of this ongoing conflict around them, VOB still keeps soldiering on. Regardless of their obstacles, it seems that the three of them are solely focused on what they love doing: music,” says Dede, who was also inspired by the story of Sufi Rabia al-Adawiyya, also known as Rabia Basri, a female Sufi from the eighth century, for this artwork.

@@robertpraetorius4007 He's got some really wild/cool stuff on Artsy! He's also influenced by Ma'rifa and mysticism. And I saw your reference to Brembos. Are you an enthusiast driver?

@@bw1342 Not really. Used to read the car magazines a lot, decades ago. Owned an '87 Fiero GT, which was a lot of fun (optioned up - pig-skin suede seats, subwoofer, etc.). I remember that the hot Italian cars (and many other high end cars) always had bright red Brembos on them. It stuck in my brain and became a metaphor in different parts of my life thereafter. Good for alliteration when you're looking for some Bs : - ) I've been interested in comparative religion roughly since junior high, although I've never studied it seriously. Gnosis magazine (long since defunct - I discovered it randomly in the magazine rack at Barnes & Noble) turned me on to the Sufis. I've been fascinated by the differences in Indonesia's approach to Islam since (again, years ago) NPR interviewed some Indonesian dude who talked about misogyny in Islam and how it wasn't really part of Islam, but more connected with Middle Eastern cultural traditions and that Indonesia showed how you could have Islam without misogyny. You can see that, even though I wasn't really a metal fan, I was primed for VoB when they came along.

@@robertpraetorius4007 I think that the appeal of VOB crosses musical genres. Their obvious sincerity, humbleness, and relative innocence has opened many hearts and minds! And their ability to deal with a very touchy subject (religion) without any proselytizing, simply by living by example, is extraordinary! And did you ever get the link I tried to send you a couple times for their song 'Jaga Kampung Nyinglar Narkoba'? It's a fascinating song they did at a very early age, with pretty advanced rhythms.
