Hi, I found this channel about a year ago, and love your work on the mic shootouts. I notice in your space you are rocking the Townsend. I have been using the Rode NT1 for about three years, and like it, but never loved it. Looking for something a bit more refined, and following the herd, I got the TLM103. Just not right for me, I sent it back. I wondered if the modeling mics were more gimmick than substance. How do you like the Townsend? Do you use the modeling feature much? Thanks!! Great vids, I hope more folks see your 'hard truths' vid!

Hey! Greg here, from VOscripts. Yes, in my personal opinion (I don't want to speak for VOscripts as an entity or anyone involved), the Sphere is an incredible microphone with a great modeling feature, and so far it's the best mic I've heard on my voice (even after doing all of these mic comparisons on this channel), specifically the U47 model (for VO, that is). The sphere is quite a bit different than other modeling mics in that it uses two capsules to allow you to model proximity, polar pattern, and axis, making it extremely versatile. Of course, there are harmonic characteristics of a microphone that no modeling system can truly capture, but for the sake that the Sphere itself sounds wonderful even without modeling (in fact, someone I know recorded and mixed a whole album using just the sound of the sphere with no modeling and it sounded great) I think it's a no brainer. As for their mic models, I truly believe that if you had to match a VO done with, say, a 416, and spliced in a spot of a Sphere 416, none would be the wiser unless you told them. What I'm saying is, even if a particular mic model ends up sounding 85-99% similar to the mic it's modeling, that's a hell of a deal rather than spending hundreds of thousands on a mic locker with vintage mics, and that's not taking into account how great the sphere itself sounds. To me, every mic model sounds like 85%-99% close to the mic it's modeling, but with a sheen of smooth top-end from the sphere itself. I can't comment on all of the mic models, of course, like some of the rare vintage ones, but just from hearing it against the SM7b, 416, SM57, and the new U87 model, it's very very close to all of them. There's some dissent online about modeling microphones in general that I think people like to carry over to the Sphere, but I truly don't think the Sphere deserves it (whereas, others ...might) it's a wonderful mic that I can only imagine is going to stand the test of time. Sorry, long comment, but I've honestly transitioned to using the Sphere U47 model as my main VO mic and I haven't taken it off of my mic stand since I bought it. I even just finished narrating a TV series with it. I will say that if you want to get one, you might be waiting a bit - they're in high demand and short on stock, but I can tell they're trying to keep up with demand (Erik from Townsend Labs is a great dude, and has been super transparent about their production delays and high demand). I've had the mic for about a year, and until I come across some reason not to heavily rave about this mic, I'm going to recommend the heck out of it to anyone who will listen. Oh and no, I haven't been paid or in any way coerced into writing such a rave review, haha. I just love this thing and I could talk about microphones until I'm blue in the face. Thanks for watching the channel! We've had kind of a lull lately, but hope to get more videos uploaded consistently in the coming months.

@@gregjohnsonvoice Hey Greg, well, I'm even a bigger fan now... I so appreciate the time you took to give me such a thoughtful answer with exactly the kind of detailed feedback that you didn't have to go into, especially for someone you don't know. Id did morning radio for years, and never gave two poops about mics. Since going into narration a few years ago, I've become mic obsessed! Just one more question for you, do you ever or often use the mic without the modeling? Is there any well known mic you would compare it to in its naked form? Thanks again, I look forward to more vids.

It’s sort of it’s own beast without modeling and not respective of any particular mic that can be thought of. We assume TLabs approach was to make a clean neutral baseline reference mic to use as a control when modeling characteristics of other mics.
