Voice Teacher Reaction to Amira Willighagen ~ Live in Concert ~ Amazing Grace

When she began you said, "Wouldn't call it full blown opera." But from the middle to finish it full blowed me out. 😲

Amira was 13 at this concert. Coleske Artists had given her a recording contract early in 2017, and this concert was in June 2017. This was the third piece she sang; the first was "Nessun Dorma"; that was followed immediately by Amira singing the soprano part of the "Flower Duet", with Corlea Botha singing the Mezzo part. Then there was a performance of "Swan Lake" by the Johannesburg ballet group,and then Amira, having changed her dress, sang Amazing Grace. There were 31 items in all that evening; the last was a performance by all the artists, including Amira, singing "MyWay" - they took in in turns to sing a few bars each, then joined in the final chorus. The venue was the Moreleta Park stadium, in Pretoria, which seats about 7500. There were three concerts in all - the Friday night, the Saturday afternoon (that was for the benefit of bushfire victims), and the Saturday night. The musical arrangement for the concert was by Deveraux van der Hoven-Oosthuizen. Coleske Artists also took Amira to Prague in 2017 to record her third album - "With all my Heart". You remark on how calm she is; quite right, she is calm - but you should understand that there is a "plain clothes" rehearsal and a dress rehearsal - everything at those concerts was timed to the split second, and so all the artists know exactly what they are doing at all times. Amira has had all the experience that goes with such a professional group - and they accepted her as a full member of the team.

Amira said in the "Opera over Chocolate Cake" video when Amira was 11, that she wants to show people that opera is not boring but really fun. Valerie certainly emphasizes the fun aspect of opera here. Amira has also said that "the larger the audience (like at this performance) the more fun she has".

In 100 years from now, people will still be watching this video and being moved by Amira's bright light. Just as Amira gives so much to the poor children of Africa, so she gives herself completely in every song, channeling to us all her joy, love, faith, peace, happiness, optimism, and warmth. The positive effect of Amira's singing and presence on people is magical yet real. She is a blessing from God.

She has really come into her own. Her voice and her body have matured in synchrony, and, as a Christian of deep faith, when she sings this song, she can really live it, as well as sing it. She sings another song, "In the Stars", which is a celebration of her grandmother, who died not long after Amira's career took off. That song has destroyed several reactors, by the way, who didn't know what it was about before they listened to it. Can't recall if you have reacted to it. Oh, and about her dresses: her dressmaker is named "Bedazzled". The only reason I know that is because she mentioned it in one of her interviews. And the only reason I mention it now, is because I just heard you say that you loved them. And so do we all.

Amazing Grace is such a beautiful hymn .... written by the Reverend John Newton about his personal reformation and his journey from athiest to a reverend and was written for his New Year Service and though not strictly opera is my favourite performance by Amira

Always loved this performance by Amira and this full orchestra. Their was a performance with Andre Rieu doing Amazing Graze that people thought great. To me thought they used way to many Bagpipes. I love the instrument, to many destroy it. In this show they used just enough and with Amira it is my favorite sung version. Just a side note. The only other instrumental I like was Glen Campbell playing the bagpipes to Amazing Grace. Thanks for another outstanding reaction to Amira. 😊❤

Valerie, I've waited for some time to hear your warm, professionally informative review of Amira's singing of 'Amazing Grace.' Like you, I hope that Amira decides to attend Julliard. Nearly four decades ago, our Dutch son-in-law, Neil Balm, enrolled at Julliard for his Bachelor/Master degrees in classical music and trumpet playing. Amira is something: her voice, her strong faith in God, her foundation "Gelukskinders". Next week she will turn 18 and with that comes her first full-size solo concert with orchestre. Very special stuff for such a young person. Another awesome singer is Jadyn Rylee from Canada. Jadyn is 16 now, and (as Amira) is singing from a very young age, and in my opinion she is as good as Amira is, but in another "department": popmusic.

I did and love Andre Reiu. I saw him live here California. I have to say though his version versus this one, Amira hands down. I love the Bagpipes, but he used too many. They just became a blur. This performance had 3 and it was beautiful

Hello again Valerie, Nice to see you still covering Amira. My initial concerns about her career in the future seem to be more subdued these days. Although I don't see her rising to the top of the genre, she seems to of found and been accepted into a comfortable niche that I'm sure will last quite some time. John McCauley Do you mean one and a half dollars, or 1.5 million dollars? In either case, you're wrong, those "net worth" videos are not accurate - they are based on the approximate KZbin earnings; and they do not take into account the ownership of the copyright. Amira has probably earned more than 1.5 million dollars for Dutch television, Andre Rieu, SONY, and Coleske Artists - but barely any of that has gotten back to Amira herself. Amira said, in 2020, "There are more sharks in the music business than in the ocean". Her first recording contract was with SONY, in February 2014, and it ran for three years (the maximum allowed for a contract with a minor in The Netherlands); her second contract was with Coleske Artists, in about February 2017 (also for three years, because she was still a minor). It ran out early in 2020, and then Covid arrived, and she is now selling on her own label.
