Tarja Turunen is a trained Opera soprano , first basics from Sibelius academy in Finland and then to finish her opera training in Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe's University of Music ) in Germany . Markos vocal training , when he started in 1980s was only , music high school , vocal lessons and thats about it , he had some damages to his voice and had an useless operation in 1990s , that left him some vocal nerve damage , later another doctor said , his problem could have been treated with vocal training .

Everytime I hear him singing after he left, I start to realize more and more how much I will miss his musicianship with Nightwish. This guy is one of the reasons I was able to make through the last 3 years, and I don't even know if I have the guts to watch them live without him this tour. The simple act of listening to The Islander has been tearing me apart the last 5 days. Might as well ask for a refund for my tickets.

Tarja is a trained Lyric , Lied singer. Classical is her main thing, though she does add some contemporary technique to her singing, she doesn't go back and forth like Floor, but she includes things like a wide mouth instead of a round one in her singing for example. Uses more nasality at times, so its more of a hybrid. She's still taking lessons with teachers. Her goal was to be a classical singer, when her old high school classmate Tuomas(keyboardist and composer) invited her into his folk band. The only reason Nightwish is metal is because TARJA'S VOICE was too BIG TO HANDLE THE LIGHT MUSIC Tuomas wanted her to sing! Ha! The legendary band as we know it was born.

I would not dare to say that THE reason nightwish is metal is tarja's voice... acctually, for a power metal band, her voice was specially troublesome, because the style itself requires a high pitched, super fast vocalist... it was the norm back in the days, and tarja on the other side... she started with a mezzosoprano, super slow voice. here lies the brilliance of nightwish, this is the gift of tuomas as a composer to the genre: the hability to mix different worlds and create something entirelly new... yes, once tuomas heard the new singing style of hers, he had a brilliant idea... but the real reason nightwish is metal is beacause all the guys in the band where metal heads to begin with, and the HUGE influence of bands like stratovarius and sonata arctica in the finnish metal scene. tuamas was already a metal fan, but he wanted to try something different, he envisioned a proyect with doom influences, atmospheric and dark, but not power metal of course... just like the thrird and the mortal for example, big inspiration for him. So he invited tarja, because he remembered her low and mature voice in high school, the operatic style was a surprise, her voice for sure changed a lot, so big and full of resonance... but is not like he said "oh THIS is a metal voice" because no, it wasn't, more probably he said something in the lines of "oh I CAN MAKE METAL with this, my own kind of genre" , again, having in mind bands like sonata, with acrobatic vocals and technical music both, tarja and tuomas had to adapt and change their styles to fit the music , specially tarja, she had to compromise a lot

@@dalia1598 yes, in the begining they explored an acoustic idea, but nothing was stopping them from making metal, they could have very well started a metal band if they wanted. But the idea was to do something different, tuomas wanted a female vocalist... he remembered tarja's voice, because she was his classmate, warm, very mature voice, perfect for a dark atmospheric sound, but she came with a new style, very dramatic and extravagant, so he was like "mmmm this is interesting, operatic singing is powerful, I coul make my music more heavy, more bombastic, people is gonna be dazzled, let's try it" my point here: yes, when the guys heard the new style of her they thought wow, we could make metal with this, isn't that cool? but is not like tarja was THE reason they went for metal... they had many influences, all of them where metal musicians, all of them where obssessed with finnish power metal at the time, but tarja's voice was not an easy voice to make metal with, that's all I wanted to say, no producer in the world would have phantom the idea of place her in a metal band in those days, can you imagine? let's do this excercise, you are a composer, you have an acoustic band, but the vocalist comes with a different style, is very dramatic, and triggers your imagination, new possibilities are open. Now tell me, wich direction would you go with the new sound? the vocalist is a mezzo, would you go for power metal? I don't think so, as a composer you know it's gonna be specially difficult, the genres doesn't mix well, the outcome can be disastrous my conclusion: her input was important, she refused to change, she kept being herself, but for sure was not THE ONLY reason nightwish went for metal. the guys wanted to make heavy music: the only thing it took to change the sound was that the vocalist could handle it, maybe they didn't expected it from a girl, but once they saw the posibility, they went straight to it, even with all the difficulties, tarja's voice was not an easy voice to mix with power metal, is was a challenge, and the outcome was wonderful

Exactly. I have really gained some hope that maybe he will return one day. Who knows... But I am really trying to understand his decision right now and hope him all the best. Maybe it's just that he has been lately feeling sad and unfortunate, but when he starts to feel better, he will find his inspiration again. I am happy though, that the resignation wasn't about arguing within the band, it was only his personal decision.

I don't htink he want to come back to the industry, as it is. He really made it clear to felt sold out, exploited and are quite drained from it.I do think, he comes back doing his thing, in his time, and not how the lables want him to be. Marko doesn't need NW, and with his hand for good musicians, NW do just fine without him.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this video. It is really a magnificent performance. My late father was why I was calling music snob and I was telling him that there was a fabulous metal band that could perform Phantom of the Opera . He scoffed, so I brought it up on our computer, turned up the sound , and he was just speechless. He was amazed by the size of the crowd, too. It was one of the fondest moments I remember with him. He passed away in 2019 and I miss him so much. Hearing this brought back that wonderful memory to me today

Marko blows me away in this. Tarja is amazing and beautiful and funny. She started out classical but had to learn metal when she started in Nightwish with her friend Tuomas the keyboardist. Islander ,Kiss when your lips ate still red. Marco and Floor are amazing together also. Marko's 55th birthday was on Thursday. You should reactvto Tarja singing a cover from Muse. You should do more Tarja by herself. He has chronic depression and is a little fed up with how the big wigs treat him and artists. He said he was dangerous and had to step out of public for a year hopefully.

Answering your question, yes, Tarja is trained in Lirical Sing. She did it around 2001-2002 in Germany. You should listen and reacting more of Tarja in her solo career. Pude ir a un concierto de Tarja y su voz es bellísima en vivo, además de que te transmite mucho 💓 Lastimosamente Marko ya dejará de ser parte del grupo, él cuenta con varias canciones como solista dentro del grupo, mi favorita while your lips are red.
