In this week's reaction video, I take a look at the Avril Lavigne controversy! I examine the theory that a vocal change in the performers style is supporting evidence of her death and then replacement (by a different person!). Did Avril get "replaced?" Is it a body double? Is the singing really that different?

A point that should be made; she uses the brighter tone on ALL albums. Easy explanation: she was a teenager pushing against the label wanting to make her a pop star. She was touring with lots of boys and punk artists at that time, and was trying to fit in. She settled back into her natural voice around 2005-2006. I also have videos from her in 2001 before her first album. She uses the brighter tone. It was just teenage angst!

During TBDT era (when she changed a lot) she wasn't that older, just a few years passed from the previous album. Aside from the original Avril "darker" tone, her "s'" sounds always had the lazier "sh" and "ts" sounds, in both singing & speech... VS contrasting performances with a very crisp clean 's' sound instead... (eg: 1:33 vs 1:39). It was this inconsistency in both pronunciation of words, as well as shift in tone, and the way it kept alternating in various performances, which first had me curious... or should I say 'curioush'....

I'm a singer myself and I should be considered the imposter too, because I don't sound anything like I did when I was 15 (I'm 27 right now). I used to be a very low alto, and now I became mezzosoprano due to being in the choir and having vocal training in college. But i guess it's just easier to say you died and been replaced. @J. O. I think she sits at that "high mezzo/not quite a true soprano" spot. But that's probably from lack of training. Katy Perry, until recently!!, does the same thing. Lower larynx position which means a lower secondo passagio. And straining to reach notes below A3. I understand she wants her tone to be rounder and darker but she really should embrace her light lyric soprano voice. I can only imagine what her vocal folds look like. But yes, I agree. She's a soprano who forces her voice type to be something it isn't.

I think a lot of people think about this theory because her voice has changed, not only when she sings but also when she talks. before 2004 she had a fairly low voice and then she became loud. In interviews she says things and from 2004 onwards she says the exact opposite by talking about her personality. Sometimes she seems to have doubts about things in her life before 2004 and it takes her a while to respond by looking around for suggestions. Now I don't say I believe 100% but doubts arise because of these things. Because a person who wrote and sang a song with a certain tone, even if she learned to use a different pitch, would still sing it as it was originally in my opinion, she wouldn't change the musicality of the song just because she learned a new way of using her voice. There are a lot of things and details that make you think, but unfortunately there's no way to know the truth either...

One thing about this whole conspiracy theory that no one seems to mention is before 2003; when ever Avril said the word “Else” she would say it in a way where it sounded like she was putting a T in it like “elTse”. I haven’t yet heard Avril say “else” after 2003 in a video. Go back and listen to the original recording of “Complicated” and you’ll hear it. The Avril I listened to as a kid, was introvert punk rock queen. The [lookalike] is bubbly, extrovert that shows a very different body language completely. If you are 40 years old - YOU WILL have the same mannerism when you were 21 and you will have the same mannerism when you are 75. Either someone brainwashed her with a different persona, or she got super lucky to find someone that looks like her (and perhaps altered herself to Avril's image).

If she had been replaced the vocal coaching could have gone either way. So... you'd think her imposter would have been trained to sound closer/identical to 2003 Avril. Also... keeping up with whoever's trending would influence your sound. Another hugely successful Canadian songwriter (whom would have been a big influence on Avril) is Alanis Morissette. Her look and genre changed drastically as well after "Jagged Little Pill." Now, in 2003 Alanis wasn't exactly trending. But what was..? SEXY that's what. Britney, Shakira etc... but more importantly pop music. But keeping up with the Jones's and perfecting your craft takes time. Avril is smart, and a brilliant song writer (which makes me proud to be Canadian) and the 2003 Avril was no exception to having sex appeal, she could pull it off if she wanted to make that transition. Obviously this would have been a big move for her to transition from punk to pop - with losing fans being a very likely scenario, so she had a tough decision to make but ultimately decided to "Let Go". Punk music has punk followers and what do punks do...? They rebel. The realization that Avril is a follower and not a trend setter leads her fans to get upset, start rumors which leads to conspiracy theories. But you do what you gotta do to keep up and stay current. This whole conspiracy thing is keeping her current as well. It's very creepy and ridiculous, but it's not exactly negative... it's mysterious and intriguing. If everyone just accepted Elvis's death then would he be trending with a hit movie in 2022? All the great ones have conspiracy theories. Again, I think Avril is smart and realizes this, hence why she just laughs it off and doesn't comment much either way. Personally though I don't think her music has changed much. Style (yes) music (no). Those who like Avril's music should be the true fans and come to the realization that it's still her, working hard, contributing, and making beautiful history for our ears and souls.

Now that I'm 26 my voice is a lot lighter than heavy. I can even hit higher notes and hold them. I know in male singers it can be the total opposite where as a younger man may have a higher voice. Then when he get's older the voice becomes deeper, and heavier but my voice is the total opposite. Sometimes I miss that heaviness sound because there was a lot of power there lol. I still have the power but that sound was bad ass for a 15 year old. I love Avril btw !!!!
