It gets overshadowed by the high notes, but during that part Geoff is doing an incredible bass line. An ascending subharmonic line followed by a quick two octave jump and then back down to the basement. I love the tenors getting their props but I didn’t want you to miss that! Also Layne just murdering the drums throughout 😏

Any of the three in the center could have hit that high note, but the one that wanted it the most was Cesar (second from the right, next to Layne) and they gave it to him. Officially, he sings baritone with VoicePlay. Life all of them, he has a crazy range. Absolutely great reaction, thanks so much. Love your excitement.. VP are very transparent with what they do... Other reactors have asked about post production etc. Both Layne(vocal percussionist) and Geoff have given interviews with Elizabeth Zharoff, ( the charismatic voice channel) . they explain what they do and what software they use. .. Yeah, thank you! Sometimes I get nervous talking about post production stuff because I'm worried that there are people out there who believe that it's all magic and that their precious (insert artist here) would never need "help". Post production is just part of the process. All the artists ever want is for the listener to get the absolute best version of their performance. And if that means mixing and using things like Edits, EQ, compression, delays, reverbs, or even (god help us all) autotune or melodyne (not that these guys would ever need it) to just nudge a note into place on an otherwise spectacular take.. I once made the heinous mistake of suggesting that Tim from Polyphia might have been using a delay (echo) on his guitar to add extra texture to a particular part.. I must have had 60 comments screaming "nah man!! He is playing every single note!!" People get really defensive. 😆

One thing that I don’t think had been mentioned to you is how generous and caring the guys are. They’ve held several Patron Costume and Props auctions with all of the proceeds going to various children and hunger charities, raising quite a bit of money each time. Items from this video were included in one auction. It was said that Eli (by the way, pronounced L-E - short for Eliezer) did some writing in the journal while they were filming, but no one has come forward to let us know what he said. So we may never know.

Voiceplay is unique, the sounds they produce are amazing and almost always organic. They have an ACA Top 10 series, cartoon, television, broadway, etc that were all recorded live. I was ready for you to dislike this-so often when someone really loves a song so much they can hear it in their heads the original way, the first time through a cover doesn’t sound right because they change it up. I’m glad you appreciated their approach-and I really loved learning about the production side of it. I’m sure I’ll be shamed, but I’ve never seen Nightmare Before Christmas either. Doesn’t matter. This was the first voiceplay video I saw, when it first came out, and it's still one of my favorites. I've watched it, and reactions to/analysis of it, dozens of times. You pointed out things I hadn't noticed or heard anyone mention before. I really appreciate your insights! This is the kind of reaction video I like best. Cesar was actually the one on those high notes, though usually it would have been Eli (Ell-ee) with his rock tenor. Like you mentioned in your last reaction to them, this group doesn't stick to the same parts all the time, they like to mix it up. Oogie boogie is a lot of fun, but I'm glad you're saving it for a bit later. It's really different from the ones you've watched so far. You can actually find them performing that one live, recorded on someone's phone or something, if you want to compare it to the more produced "official" version.

The Oogie Boogie song does blow people away with Geoff's performance but frankly it's the not the best example of what they can do with a song. Maybe get to it sometimes but to my mind there are better examples. And this is one of them. They are great singers but to be fair it's the ones who do the arrangements that you have to thank for the harmonies, etc. The rest mostly sing what they are given to sing, albeit they have musical training. Geoff the bass and Layne the beatboxer do most of the arranging , about 50/50 , with the odd one being done by Eli.. And whoever does the arrangement also does the editing. And yes Geoff on his low notes and Layne do need to be near to a mic do get the sound they want.

Loved your reaction and analysis! Oogie Boogie showcases Geoff's range better than (I think) even other numbers where he actually hits higher and lower notes, but this one definitely gives the other guys and Omar more attention, which they totally deserve. I mean, I know the arrangements are awesome, but I didn't have your experience to know how awesome - my education was strictly classical/acoustic before my ears flopped on me. So thank you for your analysis. ... Oogie Boogie song is very much a solo-plus-backing style, and VP are usually very into passing around the lead, so it's not really typical in that sense. But I promise when you get to it. From the things you pick up and comment on? You gonna have fun. A beta blocker might be needed for Hoist The Colours, though 😈

I love this version of the song. It's more of a pensive reflection of days gone by. As far as production goes, I saw something with the guys and they were talking about how they do stuff in post production sometimes. I saw a video with Geoff and he was saying he doesn't sing super loud because they have microphones.

Yeah! Absolutely, that's just how sound works. It's hard to sing low loudly due to the physics of how air moves through the vocal tract. By comparison think about how easy it is to make a loud sharp noise with a referee's whistle. You can hear it around an entire stadium. It's also why I can hear children squealing over at the primary (elementary) school three blocks away at lunch time. 😆😆

I'm pretty sure (from singing experience, not from beatboxing - I know nothing about that) beatboxing wouldn't exist without amplification. As a classsically trained pianist, I think how they turned amplification, sound effects and mimicry into an amazing artform is brilliant. It's exactly how Beethoven took the newfangled metal frame of pianos to create new styles of playing. And these new a capella bands took the opportunity to create masterpieces

I think at the belt towards the end where had the rock God Eli, Omar, and Ceaser singing the scream. I think Ceaser is the one that went really high, then Omar, and Eli were a note under him, but then ended in unison. Absolutely amazing. I also liked how when they ended they were all singing an F but in four different octaves. Stunning version.

This did brighten up my day! I enjoyed hearing you talk about and point out different techniques. I'm sure they clean things up like you talked about, but that being said, I was shocked the first time I heard live audio from these guys. Layne legit sounds like a drum kit live. I've never really heard anyone make a better snare. I always tell people if you wanna hear what they sound like live, without all the production, just watch some of their older Aca top 10 videos. The sound quality is better than what you can hear from their shows but it's done as is. My favorites from those are the Broadway (this one is several years old but it's just plain hilarious. If you watch it, watch all the way to very end for a tiny blooper reel) and Disney sidekicks.

Omg.....how fun was that?!?! That arrangement of those chord changes that brings the melody and then adds so much "seasoning".....just was incredible. The first slide that had the dissonance to it and ended bright hooked me. The bass line really tied things together. Those runs.....were so perfectly placed. Rewatching this today I have to say that learning vocal exerccises as a child - scales and arpeggios - does train the ear for singing in tune. Even at almost 80 now I can still sing a capella in tune.

One of my favorite things about this arrangement is that you're looking at these three guys who can *all* do the notes we're all waiting for. And you're sitting there thinking "Okay, well Eli makes sense because his belt is tailor-made for this song." But then you're also thinking "Omar is the featured artist which means he'll probably do it and he's clearly capable of like...shattering glass with his high notes." And then you look at Ceasar and you're like "Wait, but Ceasar has also hit notes that would make Mariah Carey jealous these days" and you have no real idea which one it will be and VoicePlay said..."Why do we have to pick just one?" And it's truly so satisfying.

Geoff sometimes posts short clips where he sings live, because his fans requests him to. He has always been transparent with the fact that he cannot produce the lowest notes with high volume (nobody can, if I understand correctly?), but he always uses a microphone anyway, so it’s not really a problem for him. I think he retains volume to A1 or G1, then it drops. Oktavists are the only singers who can properly project notes in the first octave without a microphone. Namely singers like Glenn Miller or Vladimir Pasjukov. Geoff is a low bass, but still high compared to those guys D: He loses resonance on a C2 and below, while more freakish low basses like the ones I mentioned can belt out A1 with a lot of volume and clarity. But yeah, Geoff is much more versatile, despite not having loud low notes. He sings beautifully in all parts of his voice.

I hope you check older video comments....I don't much like making suggestions about my faves on videos that focus on other groups. I don't like to take away from their 'time'. However, it has been quite a while since you did some VoicePlay and you have missed some spectacular songs! In particular, VoicePlay did an unreal version of "7 Nation Army" by White Stripes. And Geoff did a very moving cover of "I See Fire" from the 2nd Hobbit movie. Also, VP did an EPIC cover of "Valhalla Calling" by Miracle of Sound. I'd love to hear your reactions to these!

Wow! apparently only 1 in 200 women are colorblind, compared to 1/6 guys. I am a Strong Protan which means that my colorblindness is pretty severe. It took me a while to understand how the glasses help me. I didn't have the "seeing the world for the first time and start crying" experience that you see in the ads. Now I love them. I finally understand how colours relate to each other. particularly reds and Oranges. orange is my favourite colour now BTW. Just go in knowing that it's not a cure for colorblindness, and even if it was you have spent a lifetime not knowing anything about colours so when you're wearing them, you'll see a new colour and still have to ask someone if it's purple or not. It takes time. Also the glasses aren't cheap, but they are good quality and they have a 60 day trial. I recommend using them for at least a couple of weeks to really get used to the effect. Make sure you use the eye test to determine your deficiency accurately. do the test on a quality screen, like an iPhone for example and make sure the brightness is up high etc. That's my 2 cents! If you decide to try it out best of luck! Oh also the sunglasses seem to work better than the indoor glasses because the effect works way better in natural light outside due to the physics of the lenses.

@PrymalChaos Hey, thanks for the extra info! I have trouble identifying yellows, they drop out when I'm looking at things. Mine isn't super strong, but I have trouble distinguishing between things like turquoise and aqua and yellow-greens, or like pink and coral and orange. My dad was color blind and my mom's dad, so she was a carrier, so here I am! Was definitely thinking sunglasses, it's outside when everyone is talking about how pretty the trees and grass are and they're blending in to the lake that i kind of feel like damn, I'm missing out. I'm also the only person on my side of the family who isn't a professional artist because, you know, blue trees and green sky can only get you so far, although I did do custom textile dyeing for a while. I dyed small samples and had my husband describe the color in detail, like this is a warm green with a lot of yellow undertones or this is a cool green with lots of blue notes, that sort of thing. I also have a much better sense of depth of tone (darker or lighter) than most people, I wonder if I developed that to compensate. Anyway, thanks for the info, I really appreciate it!

Hey Marsha, just to be clear, I wasn't picking on them specifically, in fact I seem to remember being pretty cautious about my wording, mostly because I attempt to avoid the savage comments you attract if you dare mention that there might be any kind of production magic present in an artist's work. There's always an angry mob who 'knows better' just around the corner. Of course the mob doesn't understand the polar patterns or frequency response of a microphone, or what a signal chain is. Or god forbid what autotune or melodyne are, or what their actual functional uses are. Either way I seem to remember that I was mostly talking about their possible (rather clever) use of a flange or phasing effect. I actually really enjoyed that choice! 🤗

Firstly, just cause you are passionate doesn’t make you correct. VoicePlay have said on record many times that they use effects. Everybody does. It’s called production. As someone who has had a recording studio in their house since the 90s I can say with fairly high accuracy whether I hear production or not. Secondly you can 100% accept the fact that someone is orders of magnitude more talented than you are without being jealous. I am in awe of these guys, also Penatonix and Home Free for that matter. Thirdly I believe that you 100% missed the meaning and the tone behind my interpretation of this song and the video as a whole. I loved this, I am always excited to listen to VoicePlay. I’m not sure how you watched this video and missed that, but here we are. Feel sorry all you want, but if you can’t see that I do this because I love music and my videos are universally positive, and the comment sections are almost exclusively filled with love then maybe this isn’t the channel for you. ❤️
