No instruments in this one, but they do sometimes use filters. Whoever arranges their work, in this case Eli with Layne, sends out the parts to each member. They record in their at home studios and send it back. The arranger edits it, tweaks it, asks for additional recordings if necessary. After the first edit, he sends it to Ed Boyer for the final mix. They record the video, usually in one day, the arrangement and audio recording can take 2 to 3 weeks.

Absolutely right. 👌 One shouldn't mistake "acapella" for "live recording". Acapella means, that all sounds (or sound sources) were created with voice or body (clapping, flipping, stomping etc.). Of course, you create multiple layers and use effects on the tracks in post production for a better/complete sound for the final product (which is the aim to achieve: The best possible result for the song, not the "5-guys-live" version).😆 But there are some "live" snippets of Voiceplay on YT where you can find pure live performances - and it's astounding how well it sounds, although some acoustic effects are missing.🥰

Their Patreon includes a surprising number of reactors. (Who all wait until the video goes public to listen and react). You might think about joining and getting some of your questions answered. They often open a feed during a rehearsal or shoot so patrons can watch. They release Behind the Scenes videos for each major video (or sometimes their minis). For this video they posted the five separate rehearsal tracks for the guys, as well as several arrangement tracks so we could hear changes that were made. In addition they have a monthly chat where questions about the videos can be answered, more in depth monthly chats with a single member (Kathy takes a turn also) (some on Crowdcast and some face to face on Zoom), and monthly video chats with individual members one on one. These are spread out over the various tiers, but I think all their patrons will tell you it’s well worth being a patron!

What seems you an instrument is Geoff's voice, either through a distortion filter/pedal or, which would have more or less the same effect as far as I remember from the reel tapes recording era 😇, simply recorded very high so that it becomes oversaturated (and distorted) and then remixed with the rest at the right sound level. 🙂 These guys are just from a different planet, I agree. They're maybe a little "too much" innovative and creative for some, but for me they're just awesome. I love that they go all in with EVERY aspect of the performance and going the a cappella expression to a whole new and different level. 🙂 Enjoyed your reaction quite a lot! See you next time! 🙂

Thanks for another enthusiastic reaction! No instrument at all; just combination of Geoff and Cesar making the guitar sounds with their voices and running it through a filter for distortion effect ( you would also enjoy Voice Plays cover of "Seven Nation Army" for similar effects). I agree with the other comments about becoming a patron of their channel as even the lower tier patrons are appreciated and treated like family. Many other reactors are patrons and do their reactions before checking out any of the behind the scenes and such. The patrons scrolling at the end of their videos are just the top tier as they have about 4000 patrons. I am a patron of both Geoff and Voice Play and it is well worth paying what many pay for a coffee for the extra joy they bring into my life. I think you would love Voice Play's covers of "Valhalla Calling" and "Carryon My Wayward Son".

Loved this from the moment I heard it. My (maybe misguided!) understanding of the guitar-like sound was an effect on Geoff's and Cesar's voices? They really did a great job of emulating the buzzy, distorted guitar sound from this song! IF VoicePlay uses any actual instrument to make a noise, they put it on screen. We see the metal bat Eli drags across the floor in "Seven Nation Army" and the shackles Cesar shakes in "Hoist the Colours" and the violin on the few times when VioLayne plays it. Now, there might probably be a bit of distortion added to what they are actually singing. But, it would be in combination to the sounds they are actually making. We have had guitar sounds before (Cesar in "Hellfire" & Earl in "Queen in 5 Minutes") and we have heard Geoff do a bit of buzz to his bass voice to emulate the electric (versus stand up) bass in "Seven Nation Army". Not to mention the times they have managed synthesizer sounds. (Check their minis/shorts of 'Streaming Services"). When watching those synth sounds in particular, they are obviously several voices combined.

My guess is the guitar sounds are Geoff and Cesar with a filter. Cesar sounds like a guitar without a filter, it's amazing how close he sounds like one at times. Though Geoff can do overtones which gives his voice a very different sound too. Enjoyed the reaction!

What was that?! That was Geoff, lol. I don’t know if they used an effect or he just pulled that guitar off, but it was him. I know Cesar can pull off a guitar; he did it in Hellfire. May I suggest you check out Tomi P covering "NO TIME TO DIE " originally by Billie Ellish, everything (voice) is Tomi, from the lowest bass note up to the whistle notes,and he arranged and produced it, and he's only in his early 20's❤❤

You seem to lean towards rock music, but I’m going to suggest that you react to a little different. As a musician I’m sure you’re familiar with it; even non-musicians know the tune. I’m suggesting Voiceplay’s Hall of the Mountain King. No, they didn’t add words. But Layne still tells a story through the voices and actions during the video. Watch and listen carefully and you’ll catch what’s happening when the music changes.

The soprano in that is worth the watching alone. Like, it’s all amazing, but her control and tone is second to none. I don’t usually like sopranos - I dislike “shrill” or “thin” sounding voices - which many are to my ears. She isn’t. Her voice is full and powerful.
