Great video. I tried Void a few years ago but I wasn’t ready for the void. Today, I’m using two OSs on two machines. I’m running Slackware and FreeBSD with DWM. I have nothing against Void Linux. It is a fine distribution. However, these days, I’ve moved away from rolling distributions and I’m doing a deep dive into the BSDs specifically FreeBSD. Personally, I don’t care for the direction Linux is going though I understand why it is doing so. It doesn’t suit me. The BSDs don’t seem interested in taking that path forward, so I’m learning it now with Slackware as my backup. Having said that, I’m looking forward to your series on Void Linux. It has always held a certain appeal to me. Take care and God bless.

@@JakeLinux Freebsd is quite the change. I have been impressed with the advances that have been made in the past few years. As with Void, it takes time to figure everything out with FreeBSD. Sorry to be a pain but what is the correct syntax for symlinking services? The void linux handbook says e.g.: ln -s /etc/sv/ /var/service/ Yours says: ln -s /etc/sv// /var/service Notice the difference in the placement of forward slashes between your video and thr handbook? Does this not matter?

Like any distro it has good and bad points. I found it annoying that I had to update the xpbd-installer before getting updates! How very M$ of them. haha xbpd-install is annoying to type all the time. It is fast but again some simple wrappers to do the soft links would be nice. It's a throw back to the old days haha An OS should make management functions easier. Systemd is annoying for sure but an improvement over the old days or rc files and run levels. it's consistent too which is nice. I miss tab completion for package names like apt has. I'm still experimenting with it. I chose to start with XFCE but I plan on following your videos and see what you do with it. Thank you for the video. Others asked about disk encryption, I noticed their website has info on how to do that as well.
@JakeLinux Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm not saying it's perfect, just perfect for me. There are definitely things that could be improved on, but that goes.for any distro. Xbps is by far my favorite package.manager it's fast and I like how it is broken out into individual binaries. I have never used disk encryption but yes it is documented, I will have to check it out and poss do a video on that since it seems to be a popular topic.

The typical guide of a "neckbeard" that don't explain any of the steps, just oh I'll choose "1GB" here and oopsie it is "way too much for a boot partition", so what is the actual right size? Not even a casual Linux user can toggle along. Who is this video for? What I learned is that Void is not worth it, it does not even have a choice of a guided partitioning. I watched both of your videos "install the hard way" and this one. I first was interesting in Void but I'll rather stay on Debian or even use Artix instead. Void what hassle... oh and for the devs good luck getting new users, because your going to need it.
@JakeLinux5 ай бұрын
@@PixelBoarthanks for sharing your thoughts. void is a great distro but it is not for everyone, just like arch isn't for everyone, and Debian isn't for everyone, and Gentoo ism't for everyone. Use what you like and what works for you. By the way, 300-500M is good for a boot partition.
@PixelBoar5 ай бұрын
@@JakeLinux I understand and you're right to some extent, it can never be "good" if there is only two hassle ways in how you choose to install it, as I see it, that means that every other distro that give you a choice is superior i.e. having a "easy" install and guides you through it all even the partitioning part, as well as having a "do it your own hard way". They've put more work and thought into it. Gentoo I can at least understand that it is that way, I don't see Void being that kind of a distro at all. I read about Void it sounded perfect: Minimalism, which I like, something in between "bleeding edge" and "stable"? At least those were the written words. Thanks for the reply and sorry for calling you a "neckbeard".
@JakeLinux5 ай бұрын
No worries, I've been called worse. I am personally working on an installation script for void that will help with partitioning because I do see your point, and others have commented on the installation process as well, which is a shame because in my.opinion it is a great distro choice.
