So it's a hydraulic brake that works via the drive line using fluid dynamics to directly slow the truck. Kinda like at torque converter but in reverse. That is pretty cool.

Had a retarter in a 2003 Peterbilt 550 cat 18 speed and jake hauling heavy oilfield equipment and it worked great. You would be surprised how much braking power it has. 80,000kms and my brake drums were still black. Only time used any brake was to park. ps. It was a option when I bought the truck and it was $8900. Extra .

Many trucks here in New Zealand use Voith Retarders in conjunction with Engine Brakes. Jacobs Brakes on a Cummins provides about 300hp of retarding. A Voith provides up to 800hp of retarding. Using both together means you can descend a steep hill fully loaded without cooking your brakes and therefore able to make a safe stop at any time. Voith Retarders work really well, are super reliable, make for quicker average speeds, shorter trip times, extend brake parts life, and crucially, much safer truck operation. They are expensive and add to tare weight, but if you have hilly terrain and or high gross weights they are worth it.

@sponny6551
@sponny6551 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, in agriculture and construction equipment. Mostly slow moving vehicles which are going very slowly while operating. IVECO engines in trucks or buses are crap. Because these vehicles are moving pretty fast compared to f.e. tractors, the engine wear is bigger, and in my City, 12 buses with IVECO engines burned, because of engine failure caused by wrong facturing procedures. Be happy that you don't have them.

Cant u use it to store the energy for takeoff as well?...kinda like an electronic capacitor...but uses the pressurised oil to drive the turbine and assist the truck in reducing engine load on takeoff...even if it lasted 7 seconds, the reduced engine load would save so much on fuel...like 1st gear is on assist, then from there, motor takes over and builds up air pressure during braking to force the oil to turn the engine on launch after stopping at traffic lights or toll gates
@dumyjobby
@dumyjobby 4 жыл бұрын
it can't because usually there is a lot of time between slowing the vehicle and take off, usually the retarder is used when prolongued braking is needed, often going downhill and rarely we have to stop in such circumstances, also the oil is accelerated in the " turbine" section but when it gets back to the oil tank it has to be slow down before reentering the turbine to create braking force, so the main tranformation of energy os from kinetic energy to heat

I drove some buses that were fitted with retarders and from a drivers point of view and many others driving service buses we hated them , they never came on smoothly , some of them even banging on and off no mater how lightly the brake was pressed , yes they may save on wear and tear but the passengers that were thrown about just blamed the driver and I actually had some heated arguments with them , most were semi automatic but some fully automatic voith push button autos , the way we got round it was to slip the gear change into neutral which made for much smoother stops , but if the company found out you would be reprimanded , this was in the 80 s 90 s so I think judging by the few buses I've traveled on they have sorted it out or just not use them on some of them.

A better solution is to have the PTO drive a hydraulic pump/motor that charges up a piston accumulator during braking. The charged accumulator will then feed the motor to drive the transmission during acceleration via a proportional pressure reducing valve allowing for fine control. That way you do not need the heat exchanger as the energy is recovered. A hybrid system for trucks in essence.

But where do you put the compressed oil when the accumulator is fully charged? The retarder is built for long downhill roads. You can´t save that much compressed oil in the truck. And you would also need a hydraulic motor for restoring the energy to the drivetrain. The system would be to heavy, so less payload.

@huntsbychainsaw5986
@huntsbychainsaw5986 5 жыл бұрын
@Stian Myrdal Laursen an engine brake does not accelerate the wear inside the engine any more than regular engine operation. The engine brake essentially turns the engine into an air compressor (simplified terms) and uses the resistance of the compressed air to make braking force. In my experience exhaust brakes or turbo retarders are extremely ineffective at producing any real braking force and the excessive exhaust heat generated by the restriction can be problematic.

@Stian Myrdal Laursen To be fair I do find European trucks to be superior to North America trucks in build quality and comfort and I would certainly prefer a silent braking system instead of this 15L Detroit screaming at me. That being said the engine wear with or without an engine brake is negligible at best but I get your point.
@huntsbychainsaw5986

@Stian Myrdal Laursen I guess I'm coming at the issues from the frame of mind that anything that adds complexity and involves heat and hydraulic fluid, if its built to the Same quality of the rest of the trucks I drive... It's going to either blow up or burn down.

seems like more tare weight than a conventional exhaust or jacobs brake, thats probly why they are not real common in the states

the brakimg force is way stronger than an exhaust braking sistem. here we have both but i rarely use the exhasut braking since is mich weaker than the retarder, even when loaded i only use the brakes when i have to come to a dead stop and even so most of the braking is done by the retarder, also it saves a great deal in terms of brakimg pads and disks amd finally you have to consider that europe us quite mountanous so just a exaust sistem doesn't cut it here.

@@Doggydoglol Only unmuffled engine brakes are loud and they're rare and only on very old rigs.

Allison builds them into some transmissions, my MD3060 has a retarder, love it.

They are probably not very common in the states because companies do the minimum to fall on the required standards. In europe they get slapped hard for violations.

depends. jakes are good, but very loud. retarders are silent, and make good braking power. its small and relativly light, just have both.

Hope they seal the wiring harness well from moisture and abrasion. If you were relying on it to brake down a grade and salt spray permeates wiring it could think it's overheating and disengage depending on how the sensors work.
