my mother was agonizing, barely conscious, when a friend of her came to visit her and started singing volare. my mom woke up for a while and smiled, made an effort to sing, which she couldnt of course, and all the family joined singing. these were the sweetest, saddest and at the same time, the happiest moments we had with her. she died exaclty 2 years ago. everytime i hear this song my face is covered by tears and a smile, and my heart is full of love and gratitude.

Italian is the most beautiful language for me to hear. The way the words are pronounced, the way they use their gesture to accentuate the meaning. I am always in awe when I hear my friend from Milan(Lombrata) have conversations with his mother. Just an incredible language that has many dialects but has been preserved for so long.

@museack It's about being a nation. Hard to understand if you are from some place that is just a country and not a nation. Doesn't matter where you were born, if you are Italian YOU ARE ITALIAN. While in those countries without identity, mainly in the Americas, they just have a country, but not a group of people that understand each other and make up a nation, race and culture with an identity. We all have to do with it, it's our race. Now, if you talk about the Italian State, country, etc. That doesn't really matter. Same you could say about the Jews for example.

Deep Italian voice over rich strings and piano is long-term class. I have no idea what he's singing but I FEEL it, and that's what counts. Drums strike up into a sad dance that wavers between optimism and sadness. Such a great texture of the fast-repeated light piano chords over the quietly-tromping drum beat. Great harmonic richness and a feel that the form of the song is evolving and telling a story. Seems like a pair of short verses and several significantly-longer Chorus refrains? So many little melodic hooks here and there. This was the Number-1 song of 1958 and I can totally see why :)

This song is so beautiful and not nearly as appreciated as much as it should be. I know the first verse and chorus from memory. When I looked up the translation I felt like I already understood exactly what the song was about. I learned some italian since then: Mio nonno era italiano ma abito in Suecia.
