I am 61. I was an only child. My dad and I were super close during my entire childhood. We did things together all the time. He gave of his time to me constantly. He was the best dad a child could have. He was my everything. My mother on the other hand was . . well, I'm going to leave it at that out of respect for the fact that she birthed me, allowing me to have a successful & magnificent life, but we were never close. Unfortunately, by the time I was in high school, my mother had started coming between my dad and I, just like she did with his family and every friend he ever had. She had to have him all to herself. Throughout my adult life I slowly saw my dad becoming more and more like her and we slowly grew apart, but I would occasionally see fleeting glimpses of the dad I knew as a child - almost as if he wanted to be that man with me again. About 10 years ago my parents and I had a final falling out, they changed their cell number and we haven't talked since (I have lived in another country for the past 13 years since I retired, but still have my same cell number & US cell service). My mother left me an 8-second voicemail a couple years ago that my dad passed away after a short battle with cancer. I never heard from her again after that. Obviously my dad never wanted to see me or talk to me before he died. I can't be sure if that was solely his choice or if my mother influenced that. Either way, I can't help but feel that my mom leaving me that message was her one last twist of the knife in my soul. I never shed a tear over my dad's passing. Today I stumbled across this song . . . cried like a fucking baby.

Michael must be a very well grounded, wholesome and emotionally-wise person to write this stuff. I think every father with young kids should watch this video to remind them of how important they are in their child's life and how they will impact their life forever. I've never seen anything else that portrays so accurately and poignantly what a young boy feels like (or wants/needs to feel like) about his dad. If this video doesn't turn a deadbeat dad's life around, nothing will.

I lost my grandfather four years ago today, watching this video and hearing the song reminds me of the kind of loving relationship I got to have with him, but it also reminds me of the pain I felt when I got the news he had passed. I remember when he used to take out his old US Army uniforms and show them to me when I asked. Losing him was the hardest challenge I ever faced, but I will always carry his spirit of love and compassion with me, and my memories of him will live on, just as his own memory will live on through me.

As a child he had to run to the shelter from the Helsinkin bombings and a bomb had hit his home apartment building. He was a biology and geography teacher and loved his students and remembered them even when they were adults. He always mentioned when someone on the local television was one of his students. He remembered them all. I miss him dearly, he was my hero without a cape. Goodbye father, I'll always love you. ;(

All of the perfection nothing will and can be made The old skin has to shed before the new one sees the day Opportunities to find the deeper powers in ourselves Comes when life is breathing and seems more than what it is Go blindly completely You tell me how, I can fly away And believe that all the angels are coming You bring me down, then I will fly again And believe that all the angels are coming The kingdom of the fathers and the heroes where are you I'm talking to you every night more than I should do What awaits and when will be the day When I can wear the cape I'm lying on the ground as always staring to the air Go blindly completely You tell me how I can fly away And believe that all the angels are coming You bring me down, then I will fly again And believe that all the angels are coming The stars are long gone but we can still see their glow Long after they’ve skidded off into oblivion You tell me how, I can fly away And believe that all the angels are coming You bring me down, then I will fly again And believe that all the angels are coming You tell me how I can fly away And believe that all the angels are coming You bring me down, then I will fly again And believe that all the angels are coming

The 1st time I watched it was so hard not to burst into tears because you start thinking about how it would make you feel in you were in his position. Not having a Dad home every day after School or something and being use to him asking how was your day. I'm a person how dad is still alive but 3 1/2 away and it's not easy when you become attached to the person who loves you no mater how many times you hurt his feelings and still saying that I love you and always be by your side till the day I die.

To anyone hating or wondering why they are going soft and not rock or metal like they used to, every great band has tried that. Megadeth, Greenday, Metallica, led zeppelin. But like all those bands they finally go back to where they started, and to be honest I like this song!
@jamesschmid606711 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this isn't a band I see as "going soft". I think they're finding their sound. They've always said who their 3 main influences are and they experiment with different levels of those influences. Back in the day they focused more on the Metallica and Misfits with just a little Johnny Cash mixed in for flavor. Now you're seeing more and more Johnny Cash mixed into their music and I think it gives them a very unique sound. They definitely stand out and sound nothing like all the generic, radio hit, wannabe rock bands.

I wish my dad where still alive, he died back in 09, I just wish he could sit right here by my side and se what a man I am becoming. This song made me cry twice. The music video basically describes what happened. Rest in peace John A. Hoag III and honor first.

Late to the party but I have been listening to Volbeat's catalogue the last few weeks and I am pissed I didn't hear them from the start. Exactly what I want in music. GREAT lyrics. GREAT singer. GREAT band. And the way they deliver their songs it hits me how music should.

Matt Walton didn't you already say this about some of their other videos? Personally I have no problems with his voice except when in a few of their songs he sings really fast. This is easy compared to Scottish, Irish and the like.
