How to Chop up Breaks in Realtime on Korg Volca Sample
If you'd like to help out the channel please consider using an affiliate link below. I will make a small profit from any purchase you make after using one of these links:

Amazon UK - Volca Sample 2: amzn.to/3jJSx8V
Amazon USA - Volca Sample (original): amzn.to/3dO677e
Amazon USA - Volca Sample 2: amzn.to/3yuav38
NOTE: Volca 'Sample 2' owners MIGHT be able to skip the section about adding silence to the samples. In the manual the sample start range is stated as 0-100% but I'm getting conflicting feedback from other users about that and I don't own a Sample 2, so try it both ways.
ALSO NOTE: There’s a slight maths error in this video, table of values should be: 0,8,16,24 / 32,40,48,56 / 64,72,80,88 / 96,104,112,120. Thanks to Goat-X for pointing this out!
ALSO ALSO NOTE: Make sure you update your firmware before trying this or you may not be able to use motion sequencing to control the sample start position for each step. Thanks to Kyle Garner for pointing this out!
Here's a video for those of you who wanted to know how I made my recent Drum and Bass video on the Volca Sample by using it to chop up breaks in realtime. Here's the original DnB video:
• Live Volca Break Slici...

www.audacityteam.org/
Remember, times the length of the sample by 0.1111 and add that value to the end.

The drum breaks came from Computer Music Magazine issue 156's cover disc so they're not online to download. This download has a set of jungle breaks that very good though, plus it's free and easy to download:
web.archive.org/web/201708010...
To clarify the process:
In order to slice a loop into 16 sections the start point for the last slice needs to be 93.75% of the way through the loop, but the sample start knob on the Sample only goes up to 90% max (not the case on Sample 2, this goes up to 100%). So we need to add an extra chunk on so 90% is then all the way through the audible part of our sample. The calculation is the same no matter how long it is or what time signature it's in (length in samples * 0.1111 gives the length of the extra section) but you'll need to recalculate it each time for different length samples
I assume most people will be working in 4/4 but you'll need a new table of values when programming the volca for say a rhythm in 3/4. That depends on how many steps it uses. So that would be 128/number of steps=x. The first step is zero, step two is x, step three is x*2, step four is x*3 etc... If the result is not a whole number, round it off to the nearest whole number. Note this is slightly wrong in the video as I made an error in calculations!

In my time testing I have found that adding 10% silence at the end (multiplying the total sample length by 0.1) makes a more precise loop and is more in time. I can confirm that Sample 2 users still have to add the silence at the end to make the breaks loop properly. Hope this helps anyone else looking to do similar things with the Volca Sample.

I made some calculations and +10% is my result as well. Little explanation: Start point knob value for the last step should be 120 (not 119. and all the others should be increased by 1.). This means last step start point will be on 85% of the length of the sample. On original sample start point of the last step is on 93.75% of the lengh of the sample (15/16). We need to make 93.75% we have into 85% we need. 93.75% / 85% = 110%.

NOTE: Volca 'Sample 2' owners MIGHT be able to skip the adding silence bit, the manual says the sample start range is 0-100% but I'm not sure this is correct and I don't own a Sample 2. Also, slight maths error in this video, table of values should be: 0,8,16,24 / 32,40,48,56 / 64,72,80,88 / 96,104,112,120. Thanks to Goat-X for pointing this out. The sample start knob on the Volca only goes up to 90% when we need to control the full range so the silent section effectively shifts the end of the sample to 90% of the way through.

This video helped me a bunch a couple years ago and completely transformed the way that I work w the vSample. And then Pajen firmware changed the game even more to expand general functionality even further. Only recently I discovered the fun of chopping up steps non-sequentially, that is, following this method but then setting parameters of random steps to different intervals of 8 (eg., step 1 is 0, step 2 is 88, step 3 is 88 again, step 4 is 24 etc.), so it can allow for programmable step jumps in a way. And motion record adjustments to other parameters on individual steps like speed/pitch works the same way, naturally. Not exactly as quick as finger drumming chopped pads on an MPC, but makes the vSample such an exceedingly unique instrument for the money. If you have several breaks/parts like this happening at once, you can let that sample knob fly between all of them as they’re playing live to dynamically switch parts up with the ‘step jumps’ and other tweaks already baked in for really wild results.

@@ChrisLodyMusic When I first watched your video, I was amazed at the fact that it was now possible to see the Sample a viable tool for making drum and bass tunes with a handful of other synths samplers I have, with the volca mostly just handling the timestretched break parts. Now after mastering the workflow quirks and experimenting with Pajen (polyphony for playing chromatic notes via midi controller, automated part muting via bar filter, QoL improvements like Part Copy, etc.) I now see it as a really handy machine capable of composing whole finished breakcore tracks all in a single box with significant live performance potential. Thanks again for taking the time to make this tutorial! Would love to see any new ideas or inspirations you come up with for the vSample :)

No problem. So in theory a sample position knob should enable you to start playing the sample from any point, but Korg took the decision to limit this to 90% of the way through to limit the amount of users thinking there unit was broken I assume as playing a sample from the end would make it silent. So the extra gap at the end offsets that 90% position to be at the end of our recorded audio and makes this possible

This is some next level volca-ing! Question: does BPM factor into this at all? Does the overall tempo need to match the tempo of the original sample? I imagine if you are changing samples mid-break that they would sound off if different BPMs? Stoked to give this whirl, thanks for the tips & tricks!
@ChrisLodyMusic
@ChrisLodyMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. General speaking, no it doesn't matter about the BPM matching because we're slicing it up to play back in sections. But you'll get the best results if you're using loops that are close to the Volcas BPM as if we slow it down gaps between the slices will appear. Better to speed them up if anything as the slices will mute each other as the next starts playing which will still sound natural even if the BPM change is quite large. Have fun with it btw 😁

The first sampled break I ever learned how to rebreak. Except that was in a rex file for Reason 1, and that was Recycle. Great little tut on the Volca Sample. I have a small section of loops on mine, taken from my own work, as well as a section containing wav's packed with very short samples of all kinds. I like to essentially double (or more) the pitch/speed of any long samples, before uploading. I only wish Korg had given the Sample just a bit more sample memory.

Not sure if breaks sounds better with 0.1 extra space or with 0.1111. It sounds odd". Could it be because im not setting the samples with thw right sample rate? I will try with 48khz. 0.1 is probably accurate enough for most things. It depends a lot on the original loop tbh. Sometimes they have a tail that can throw a spanner in the works so experiment and see what works for you. Changing to 48khz shouldn't make any difference because samples are automatically converted to 32khz before they're transferred. I never did get round to trying the Pajen firmware. One day maybe 😄

@@ChrisLodyMusic it sounds "better" now with my samples at 0.1. still not close to perfect. A tip would be to have the first sequence of the volca sample only with the chosen break of the pattern1 already set with motiom sequence, then turn off thwe motiom sequence so parameters dont get oveerwritten. Then ,one could be able to use other external sequencer to triggger al dthe other slots samples with other midi channel (pajen firmware). Although , another contra is that I need to check better the matter of sequencing because whenever you dont use the internal sequencer of the volca sample , the break stops being proceessed. Oh I see 😄 Yeah I'd be interested to see if it works. Don't know if you saw my notes in the description but you should be able to skip adding silence on the Sample 2, but not had any feedback from anyone to confirm this yet

@@ChrisLodyMusic yeah mate i saw your notes figured i would confirm no silence needed 👍. Baught this for the exact purpose of chopping break loops, then i wanted to smash it trying to make it happen. So this tutorial was literally the godsend. Much much props

Where can i get a load of sexy drum loops like that?

These loops specifically were from Computer Music Magazine issue 156's cover disc. They aren't available online anywhere so I added a link to some similar loops in the description

I do not know why you transfer a lot of loop samples, I mean, only just one loop sample transfered is really needed, right? And you can load the same loop in every slot
@ChrisLodyMusic
@ChrisLodyMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Well by doing that you can turn the sample selection knob to chop between different samples in real time for more variety. There's no point in putting the same sample in multiple slots as that just wastes memory

@@ChrisLodyMusic sorry I did not explained myself very well, I meant just only one transfer to Volca and then loading the same wav into each step as you did it. So now I've understood that the point is transfering diferent loops and changing between them with the sample knob for obtain that effect of variety loops
