It happens all the time in the US. People checking my door and waking me up by doing so. I went to the expense of getting a remote starter. Thus from the convenience of my own warm cozy bed, I start my van. I've been here a pair or four or even six feet running from my rig. I also often hear expletives of whoever talking to whoever. I highly recommend my Approach, it has helped this gray haired old granny, out on many a night.

You were in a precarious situation that as a parent , I’m hoping you’ve readjusted your trust a little. You have been beyond fortunate to have had such safe passage in dangerous countries. Beyond fortunate? That's a misperception America is not the safest place to be anymore and beyond that the risk may be higher in other countries but the chances are still in their favor. Nowhere are crime rates 9 out of 10 or even 5 out of 10 people experience crime so statistically speaking they are not "beyond fortunate". That was my exact idea. I was also thinking getting a horn found on big rigs would do well to scare them off (only down side is that those are air horns, therefore they would need an air reserve, compressor, and a buck of additional things for it to work right)

@@JGreyJens Air horns aren't really that complicated. They make small but powerful units for motorcycles that would work just as well on vehicles. And they aren't too expensive. Might still be worth a try.

Your experience reinforces for me: Make sure my tow vehicle to buy is my main home, while the cargo trailer is for guests and back up. Have flooding lights. I all ready always lock my doors and I do have protection equipment. I don’t plan to travel in the areas you have been, but I do enjoy watching your experiences. Stay safe.

OMG! you even went to the same beach me and my son visited. Playa las penitas is the beach. Please visit the plaza in Leon and walk through the basilica. Sorry about your border experience. Nica & Honduras at the border is not fun. I traveled back and forth with those aduanas when I lived in Honduras a couple of years ago but just during the day and it was always very sketchy. I just can't imagine the aduanas at night. But the rest of Nica is wonderful country, you get to see what life was like decades ago while also seeing some modernization. Please don't let that experience at the border get you down. It'll be just another one of those experiences you'll be laughing at years to come when you talk about your van life travels through Central America. Don't forget to go to Masaya.

I watched another Van Life video where the van got broken into while they slept and stole all their stuff in the front seat area! U need to strap down both doors together while u sleep so even if they pick the lock they can’t get in. That’s what they started to do. Be safe. Wishing u the best from San Francisco.

I saw a vlog from a korean couple living a vanlife driving around EU, they slept through the night not knowing someone had gone through their front seat stealing all their electronic stuff (ie; camera,laptop etc). They somehow thought the thief had infused gas in the cabin for them to sleep in.... scary thought. Because of that, I have been placing sensor lights & motion alarms around my van to hopefully scare them off. My backup plan is my great dane (which take half of my space in my van anyways) LOL.. We keep a second Car Key Fob (with the Alarm button) on a hanger near the bed to set off the truck's alarm system if we hear odd or suspicious things. If our anxiety increases, we put our stereo on full blast and play Heavy Metal. It scares anything on the perimeter. Volcano boarding? Who knew?

The van is probably just as secure (or more so) as a sticks and bricks. If you were up on a second floor with the bedroom door shut you probably wouldn’t hear someone coming in on the first floor. I’d be a bit freaked out too but breathe in and breathe out and enjoy the journey 😊

So sorry for your night time intrusion!. Everyone on here has had good suggestions for your safe travels. If you have a CB & it has a pa output you could also mount a speaker on the outside & shout into mike "I have a gun or any other deterrent". I like the idea of using the key fob if it has a panic button! Great video. Sorry about the camera but drone shots were great! Like someone already suggested you might buy an camera external mic & use the camera mic jack but there's no assurance that that jack hasn't been effected also! Did you try putting the entire camera in a pillow case to protect it & put that in another pillow case full of rice to dry it out. Or maybe just having it near rice might dry it out. IDK. Always arrive at your campsite early enough to get an idea of any potential problems & preferably stay where there is guard protection. Stay safe & have fun!! Love you all!

Volcano boarding!?! Looked like a blast. Maybe you have heard of this security tip. I came across a You Tube video before which shared a trucker's tip of using ratchet straps inside the cab from drivers door to passenger door handles. Leave the quick release in the middle in case you need to disengage and drive off quickly. Acts as another layer of deterrent should someone pick a door lock.

You should put some flood lights up on top of your van all 4 corners. That way when you hear something you can flip a switch. That would help a lot
