@Mark13333 жыл бұрын
I don't really comment on other people's channels, but I was wondering when this was going to occur, like many people around the world we knew it was only around 20km away from Reykjavik. Like others have commented, it is a fascinating angle I haven't seen before as yet, as well as the many videos of others visiting there who have recorded so much, from not just images, but to technical details, to fire tornadoes, drone footage, the sounds of the volcano, maps, charts, the earth movers trying to protect the road and fiber optic cables, tumbling boulders, the composition of the lava, the walls of the volcano collapsing (many times), the geyser that seems to be regular, the moss burning (making it look like fissures were opening up elsewhere), people making their way up and around and back and right up to, sitting and watching, night time footage and eruptions, the colours of the lava at all stages, panoramic shots, picture in picture eruptions, even the parking area and food van, and the list goes on and on and on. Like krisushi1 stated "I'd rather be watching the volcano anyway than the deplorable television content where I live." Or the news where I live, that shows doom and gloom and no information on this fascinating volcano birth and growth, which can and is being covered by so many people visiting this volcano or even the news there. For particular shots, angles and the like I was looking for, I just had to wait a few days and lo and behold someone recorded it and posted it on KZbin. I really wanted to see the all seven cones (only one is active now) and I did a few days ago as it was posted and it reminded me of the Hawaiian islands, as though they are islands, that's how they were built, one after the other in eruptions. Though this volcano if it continues, could bury all of them given enough time and lava flowing. I have heard that scientists are 'flocking to Iceland' to study this volcano, but you know what, I haven't seen or heard anything really from them on this, if at all and certainly not from the news where I live, for weeks now. Well done to the authorities too for their knowledge and skill at controlling the site, they of course have had centuries of practice of what to and not to do, that some other places in the world could learn from. One last funny point to leave on, is the scientist who said this eruption (when it first began), 'would last only a few days, perhaps a month'. Scientists are always changing their minds on certain subjects or getting it wrong and on this one, I am glad he was wrong on this one and for all the footage every one has supplied us with. So thanks again for your video and all those other ordinary people that have kept us informed, fascinated, thrilled and in awe of Mother Nature at work in the 'land of fire and ice' that is Iceland, where there are other volcanoes too, but to this one in particular. In the last couple of days the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption has been called a 'wonder of nature'.

Yes indeed, it's been a truly interesting and wholesome thing to keep returning to on KZbin, seeing and learning more as it develops in real time, hasn't it?! It's fun to watch. I'm particularly happy for all those Icelandic scientists who got SO close on the very first of days before lava covered the place they'd been standing!! And the undramatic attitude of Icelanders in general! Like advice for hikers: prepare, take care and don't be an idiot.

15th January 2024 and a little over 24 hours ago at this date, the fourth volcano in this region erupted, so we have had them in 2021, 2022, 2023 and now this one, which has two fissures at Grindavik and where the first houses have succumbed to lava flow. Scientists are expecting this region to be continue to be like this for some time to come, (not as disruptive as the 2010 eruption that lasted for a shorter period, but these new eruptions will last for longer). I have made a play list with these (where clips are allowed) and as usual, 'the land of fire and ice' has not disappointed, though sadly, some people will lose their homes in Grindavik at this time, but the town was evacuated weeks ago.

@ursuss1003 жыл бұрын
To make it simple, Iceland is the largest part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises higher than the sea level. It is the exact opposite of subduction volcanism (where plates come together), here the North American and Eurasian plates move away from each other instead, which allows lava to flow between them. For this reason, most if not all Icelandic volcanoes produce fissural eruptions with lava fountains, though volcanoes located under the ice (like Eyjafjoll or Grimsvötn) can produce explosive eruptions when lava contacts the ice and vaporizes, which also poses a danger due to Jokulhlaups (floods caused by melting glaciers bursting open).

Even if the distance to the volcano is bigger than it was in *_Heimaey_* island, I hope that you won't experience the same nightmare than these islanders had in 1973. 😉

Thank you, my father in law lived in vestmannaeyjar during that eruption, woken up in the middle of the night to evacuate the island by boat like the whole population

@ The first time I made a port call in Reykjavik, almost 40 years ago, I went to a _"volcano show"_ and one of the movies they showed was about Surtsey and Heimaey. I was very impressed and since then I kept fascinated by volcano eruptions, esp. in your country. Now, with internet, it's so easy to attend the volcano show in my living room thanks to people like you, which like to share the natur wonders they see.

The biggest worry for the capital area is Hengill...far and away...it could easily level a huge swath of the northern and central parts of the Reykjavik metro if it wanted to.

I want to remind some info - the capital of Salvador has two volcanoes in the middle of city, one of them due to “ action” any day....

This is an amazing view of this historic eruption. I love the background noise of daily living also.

When it spurts, you can hear everyone cheering...! Exactly what I would be doing, if I was a comfortable distance away, and wasn't facing the wind.

Imagine the level of anxiety of all those poor people. A bit like Catania and Mount Etna! May God help you all!!!

Thanks, we're mostly safe, there is of course real danger closer to the eruption site, there always the danger of toxic gasses blowing our way but then we get warnings from the government 🙂

Unless it erupts in Reykjavik (doubtful) they will be fine. Lava already headed for the ocean up from Grindavik.

Is that noise traffic near or the eruption rolling in like thunder ?
3 жыл бұрын
I'd like to say the eruption rolling in like a thunder, that just sounds bad a** but it's probably the traffic

Love it how Icelanders be like, oh, a volcano erupting half a mile high? 'Yeh, you see one, you've seen them all.'

Little side note: this exact mountain (Fagradalsfjall) is the location where one of the founders of the USAF, General Frank Maxwell Andrews, lost his life in a plane crash during WWII. The plane which crashed, a B-24, actually bore the name... Hot Stuff. The cruel irony... :(

Oh dear. Now I start to feel worried about Reyjavik. This shows no sign of stopping or slowing down. Are there plans for where the best place to move Reyjavik town to? Are there plans for how to finance building a new town? Could those coming to look at the volcanoe be asked to start donating? I know that people will say that the lava might not come this way but it is best to start thinking about these things well in advance, very well in advance.
