Voldemort, to me, even while he was young, always seemed like a sociopath who committed evil just for the sake of it. Anakin, on the other hand, was more of a tragic figure because of his very noticeable passion, feeling, and empathy; and that's what drove him to the dark side. Darth Vader was redeemable, Voldemort was not.

Vader knew he had to stay with the dark side after he became more machine. There was no way he would ever beat Palpatine after that (he was planning to do it before Obi Wan fought him). He had to play his part as a Sith forever after that.

Tom Riddle was left in a muggle orphanage so of course they couldn't understand what his magical powers were and would be afraid. How could you not empathize with a orphan child who has no one to explain what these weird powers are in the first place and not expect him to act out on the sadness of being left all alone with no one to love him? Tom Riddle was redeemable. In fact Dumbledore stated it was his greatest regret that he didn't take better care of the orphan he was in-trusted to look after. And one of the key reasons he vowed to do a better job with Harry. Tom Riddle became Voldemort, he wasn't born pure evil. No one is. And it's a convenient mistake for humanity to believe so. Even Hitler was an innocent child full of good & promise but at some point later things changed. The parallel between Tom Riddle and Harry's upbringing and that "it is the choices we make which determines who we turn out to be" is what makes Harry Potter's story so wonderful and Voldemort such a fully formed villain instead of the typical stereotype.

Their similarities are narrative tropes that exist in every villain archetype. Aside from plot purposes, it is really unfair to compare the Anakin to Voldemort. Voldemort literally could not love from being born from a love potion. Everything Voldemort does is for himself because he could not care for anyone. Voldemort would have been a sociopath either way. He was hurting other children for revenge and amusement before knowing he was a wizard. Voldemort’s end goal was to rid the world of muggles and live forever even before the prophecy. Anakin wasn’t allowed to have attachments and was conflicted. But he had friends/family and goals that stemmed from that. Anakin’s actions, though misguided, were not purely selfish. Anakin didn’t look down on others; his arrogance was from his own skill, not a superiority complex being told he was "The Chosen One”. Anakin never hurt anyone innocent prior to his mother’s death. His end goal was to be a Jedi master and live happily with his family. And even after turning dark, his goal was to bring order to the galaxy. Vader is not the villain; he is an anti hero equivalent to Snape. -in love with the hero’s mother and had an early friendship with her -physically separated from that friendship (jedi training vs. being sorted in Slytherin) -turned dark as result of losing that love and became a follower to evil -ultimately died helping the hero and brought their boss’s downfall

Vader is more of a tragic hero turned villain. He consciously chose to do dark deeds for selfish reasons and much later realized his mistakes. If anyone is an anti-hero is probably Han Solo before he realized his heroism to help the rebels.

I agree. I don't see Vader on the same page as Voldemort, not even the same chapter. Voldemort was truly evil and seductively gathered a large following for himself. Vader was himself seduced to the dark side and was severely manipulated by the real dark lord of the Sith who exploited Anakin's conflicted emotions. Not a direct comparison to Snape, either, but Vader was still a more complex character than Voldy.

That's a nice way to see it, but I disagree that Vader isn't a villain. You can have complex origins and be conflicted, and yet be villainous. Most tyrants are dangerous not so much because they love to cause evil, but because they think they are correct.

The comparison is odd, these two are very different. Riddle shows signs of psychopathy very early on. He's characterised by a complete lack of empathy and remorse, sense of entitlement (he feels special - even as an orphan, then clings to the fact he's a descendant of a powerful wizard etc), and he manipulates everyone around him and never forms a true bond (he just uses whoever is useful and discards them when the're not anymore). Vader is very different. He does share a troubled childhood that has consequences later on, but that's the extent of it. Anakin does form true bonds: he does feel close to his mum, to Padme and to Obi-Wan. He feels empathy, but not for everyone in al circumstances: the Sand people case is more a case of racism than lack of empathy ("They're animals, they're all bad, the killed my mum and deserved to die!", not "Oh well, who cares about them?") and he does feel remorse when he realises that he also killed the children. He's got awful impulse control and heavy anger issues, but that alone does not make a psychopath. He does have an inflated ego, however, but not so bad as to not be able to recognise the worth of others. When he rejects his loved ones in the end, it's not because he never cared. He becomes paranoid and thinks that he trusted the wrong people, the cause of it being cognitive dissonance: he has to believe that, otherwise he'll realise nothing he did was justified and that he behaved like a monster, then he couldn't live with himself. Turning to the dark side is his last resort apart from suicide. This stays with him, just not on the surface, and when he finally feels empathy again, for his son, he realises he was never justified, and that the best solution for him is to die in order to save his son: doing something good for someone he loves while also ending a life he didn't live the right way.

In a way, I agree. Anakin could not be the hero of his own story and could not live with himself, unless he accepted to become the monster: Vader. Anakin hides behind this monstruous Vader personality, because life would otherwise not be bearable.

Danielle Rush maybe I wasn't clear, sorry. Of course, he doesn't kill Sand People just because they're Sand People, but he generalises them so much (yes, the tribe captured and tortured his mom, but he cannot blame the children for it) that he sees them as all the same and better off dead (even though he does show remorse later on). That's what I meant by "racism": some of these people did something awful and to him it was a good enough reason to exterminate them, children included. Granted, it's "racism" on the spot and he doesn't think it's okay once he's had time to reflect on it, but to go so far as to exterminate innocent children, even when heavily distressed, implies generalisation and dehumanisation of the whole people. Side note: Cliegg Lars is clearly racist against Sand People. Again, he had good reasons to be angry, but he also generalises as if every one of them were pure scum.

I never realized how much two of the most brilliant villains in movie history were so similar. Even their final battles are similar In Return of Jedi, Luke wears a Green lightasber to fight Vader's red one. In Harry Potter, Harry uses a Red spell against Voldemort's green one. Great job girls! I honestly don't believe that Darth Vader and Voldemort are all that good as a comparison. For one thing Vader knew love and was far less of an egomaniac compared to Voldemort. I believe the better comparison would have been between Voldemort and Palpatine although it does seem that they are essentially the same person in different worlds.

Also I feel that Draco Malfoy and Vader have more similarity. Both serve as an antagonist to the main hero and are corrupted by dark forces preying on their fears. Both also have some redeeming moments towards the end of their story. Finally both did evil acts but were not completely evil where as Voldemort and Palpatine could be essentially evil incarnate in their respective stories.

Personally I think that Voldemort will always be worse. Even as a child he loved the dark arts and found joy in hurting people. Vader has happiness and love in his early life and could feel love. Ocarinaot 4 nope you’re absolutely wrong and ignorant. Voldemort took over Great Britain, the prison, the ministry, and other schools. Vader didn’t conquer crap accept for killing Jedis. It was Palpatine who worked hard to take over the galaxy. Palpatine was the brain behind the control of the galaxy. Vader has many failures to the point where Palpatine would always send assassins who tried to kill Vader in the canon comic books.

Really great analysis! It brought up a lot of parallels I didn’t see before. I gotta point out that in the case of Darth Vader, his problems with love and emotions aren’t really his fault. The Jedi teach their students not feel emotional or even too strong of a platonic love (let alone romantic), in order to avoid strong attachments. Anakin’s inability to even talk about his predicament with Padme with ANY of his mentors or peers made him turn to the only person who offered guidance (Palpatine). I think the tragic part about Darth Vader’s story is that if the Jedi rules were more sympathetic and understanding towards normal, healthy emotions, Anakin wouldn’t have become evil. The fact that he was isolated from everyone he knew and cared about, and he couldn’t reach out for help for fear of being kicked out, meant that he was desperate for help but couldn’t find any.

Vader turned to the dark because the light made him ashamed of who he was. From day one he was told that normal human emotions were "evil". He was made to be ashamed of who he was and as a result turned to the one person that didn't shame him for these things, Palpatine. If you look at the books, comics, etc Anakin had a very deep relationship to Palpatine beyond just the "he can help me save Padme" bit. Had Anakin believed he could talk to Obi-Wan about losing Padme he would have. They were like brothers after all. However, Anakin was brainwashed into believing that the Jedi would shun him if he talked about his "forbidden love", and this made him afraid to open up (and rightfully so as the Jedi would have shunned him for it.) The Jedi were just as much at fault for Anakin's fall as Palpatine and Vader himself were.

My personal opinion is that Vader has the best story of any villain. A slave boy, unlike Voldemort who could do great things happen in childhood, he’d never done great in the race except Once. Was meant to be The Hero unlike Voldemort. Was training to become a hero. Became a hero. Then lost his mother and feared losing his partner. The primary reason (probably the only reason) he turned to the dark side was to save her, that’s it. But he turned on her at last. This showed that never do a wrong deed for the right reason, not even once. It transforms your character. You kinda forget The Right Reason after doing the wrong deed. It’s a universal law. He couldn’t have stopped himself from killing the sand people though, nobody could have (after seeing his mother suffer, if they’d killed And thrown her, it might have been different)! The originals were better movies but prequels had a better theme. That’s saying something. The originals were about Luke’s hero’s journey kinda like LOTR.

I think the hatred for the son figures symbolises the anger caused by how vulnerable they felt when they were themselves younger. They were parentless and helpless but couldn't accept that on a psychological level because they had to survive. As a result they became seemingly independant and strong by giving in to the darkness and the idea of a young and helpless person that might even have a support system like friends that, in their eyes, prolonges this weak state enrages them.

I think there's another interesting comparison you might've skimmed over, but it's important to both the dark father archetype and their shared origins: Both Vader and Voldermort had powerful, sage-like but initially naive father figures of their own (Obi-Wan Kenobi and Dumbledore) that they wound up betraying and inevitably became obsessed with destroying. Only to have that father figure best them, survive, and go on to help train their "sons", acting as both teacher and quasi-spiritual grandfathers. Grandfathers who try to learn from the mistakes made with raising the dark fathers, and who try to lead the sons down the right path. Yes, those sons had to come of age on their own terms, but it's still an integral trope in these types of fantasy stories.

Now understand, Kylo is doing to Rey what Vader did to Luke. He wants befriend her because she is more powerful than him and he knows it. Reylo will never happen because I think not only is Kylo ren a brat but also he is a self deceptive evil. He wants to get Rey on his side and subordinate her later because he envies her.

Luke was never more powerful than Vader, he won because Vader was done being Emperor's bitch boy and he wasn't trying to kill his only child. I always thought Vader held back in his fights against Luke based on the immense force powers we see him use on others that he doesn't even attempt on Luke.

nick794, i believe Kylo Ren wants to finish what Vader started, and that was to end the sith and jedi altogether. Vader couldn't do it his way cause he got burned and became machine. He even stated that he and luke should team up and kill the emperor and bring order to the galaxy (although that was evil order). Vader would have called himself something else other than Sith. Luke might have decided to not call himself a jedi after. But that never happened because both sith ended up dying with Vader coming back to the light. Luke was the only jedi left. Years after, the new jedi order has been rebuilt, but the dark side is always there and Snoke revealed himself. Took Kylo and probably told him what Vader's true mission was. Kylo killed off the jedi and Luke was still the last jedi left, Kylo and Snoke do not call themselves sith, the sith are no more. They only use the dark side of the force for power. Snoke told Kylo that he sees so much balance of light and dark in him, and this might be what Kylo Ren is trying to do. Snoke wants the power to be completely evil, Kylo might be different. Use the dark side of the force for power while still believing to be fighting for the light. He even claims to let the pass die, and then "kills" Snoke, the last remaining person to really know anything about the dark side's history. Luke dies on his own, and thus there is no jedi and no sith left. Rey is not a jedi yet, and it is unknown if she will call herself one. Kylo realizes she is very strong in the force (mary-sue or not), and realizes that she may in up being a new jedi ect in the future. Tries to keep recruiting her so they start a new way for the force. Maybe that what's it all about. But then again, maybe im listening to much theories and reading the books to help out the theories but who knows.

@1:46, I believe both Anakin and Tom, both chose the dark arts... To overcome their fear of death. Anakin fears death, because of the loss of his mother, he's fear of losing Padme, and his desire to eventually overcome death itself. Palpatine promise this to Anakin, in exchange for learning the dark arts from him. Tom, on the other hand, chose to split his soul into horcruxes in an attempt to achieve immortality. (think of a lich and his phylactry) to achieve both of their goals, both did terrible in heinous things. Vader killed all the Jedi save for two. Voldemort murdered seven people to split his soul into 7 separate pieces. One of the biggest cautions that I take from Voldemort and Vader is understand that what you want has serious repercussions and consequences and you should be careful about how you go about achieving your goals.

a small remark. While Vader was driven by the idea of cheating death, in order to save Portman, Palpatine managed to achieve immortality, without shattering his soul and loosing physical appearance (see old canon), unlike Voldy, who used to be #1, but due to his mental instability (Hitler's reference), Tom lost most of his powers, yet managed to get some of them back over and over again. to make it easier, Voldemort is consumed BY turmoil, while Sidious CONSUMED the turmoil. Sidious doesn't need to understand the value of love and friendship, because he managed to use the Dark Side through his pure mind, thus concentrating the most destructive force, in comparison with Voldy's powers or than nuisance called love and friendship.
