I own one and have spent more money on it then any of my other cars, i have lifted it 2 inches, 2 larger borgwarner turbos, front e locker (factor rear), wider injectors, remaped to 300bhp with a bit over 700nm of torque, adjustable air suspension, dsg remap (holds revs longer) momo wooden steering wheel, la cucaracha horn, A/C seats, amazing tan leather sports seats, cooper discoverers stt pros, 18 inch wolf race 7 spokes, powerflow straight pipes, aluminium rock sliders, full underbody protection, dub line matte white with twin black stripes on the right ridgid industries 20inch light bar with orange side lights, k&n air filter with wide bore snorkel, bush wacker flares, 80% rear tint, 50mm wheel spacers, alpine double din unit with android auto and hema support, kenwood subwoofer, 4 jvc 6x9s, 2 sony tweeters, 2 sony mids, extra sound deadening, diesel overnight heater, odssey pc1350, 150amp lithium 120w solar, dc to dc charger, waeco 65l dual zone, maxtrax, gobi rack, trek overland boxes and oh yeah new rubber floor mats factory 1 sucks

This is way by far the best ute I have driven. Love the Ranger, love the Hilux, but this is by far superior, who wouldn't want one of these? So impressive.

Got my stx550 in 2014 for $55000 and no problems at all in 80000kms unlike our two amaroks with continued electrical problems and other issues so much so that we dont take out of town anymore hope this v6 has been sorted out because v6 diesels are the go the stx 550 is a rocket

I see they have not got rid of that old senile man Norm! it is not a recreational vehicle its a proper off-road 4wd the ground clearance is on par with all the others. I also hate it when reviewers like these people bag a car because it does not have "low range" like the others! VW has smarter technology in the 8 speed so as to not need it.

I was at a 4WD show in Victoria 2 weekends ago and not too many ppl rolled up in Amarok's. Mostly Toyota's, LandRovers & Rangers. Would a top set of muddy's help the Amarok in the mud, if it's relying on its standard transmission?

Shark1076 most VW has this function. It's not a fog lamp, it shines the lamp to the side which you are turning into, to illuminate around the bend a bit. Handy when parking at night.

The V6 has the Aisin 8-speed gearbox... Not ZF

nope. its ZF 8-Speed AL552-8qu. its the same drive unit as in Q7 or T-reg.

Just make sure you get your car serviced by a competent and qualified mechanic who uses proper VW certified oils/parts. Otherwise they tend to have reliability issues which many have complained about. There are way too many under qualified and/or unethical mechanics out there.

even though it has more torque and power than the V8 turbo diesel land cruiser you have to remember that the reason a land cruiser motor is so reliable is that they dont try and push the motor to much with loads of power

i know that VW not pushing that engine much because i have driven one before but i was told that is the reason that toyota dont push heaps of power out of their engines. I hope that explains a bit better what i was trying to say

You know, people said the same about the 2L engine, and they will probably say the same about the engine even if it was a V8. Maybe they just cant stand it that a VW can be that good so they have to knock it for any reason they can think of. Never mind the fact that it's the same engine used in the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. You can Google "VW engine problems" and swap "VW" with Toyota, Nissan, Holden and and and, and all of them will have issues of some sort... I personally think it's just an Aussie thing that we love our V8's and when something smaller (maybe better?!) comes along, we simply dismiss it without even trying it at least. So what if it is better?! You dont have to buy it if you dont want to, but good on them for achieving that I say. We need stuff like this so other manufacturers can up their game a bit too else we are stuck with the same old vehicle shapes and engines. How boring would that be. Give someone credit where credit is due. And just so everyone knows, I have both a 70 Series Single Cab for work and an Amarok for the family car. Love them both!

Kyzonify It's the auto that doesn't have low range. But trust me, the trans is that good, steep hill climb is a no problem fyi it is capable to crawl a 100% steep hill with that auto.

a $70k over priced Ute with less airbags than a $20k Kia, (btw a Kia has better safety features) with one of the worse backseat space in the segment is a favorite for 4x4 of the year? you guys should also try stand up comedy!
