Lol wow man as a person who doesn't have a car, that's steep!! But then again, even a used Rolls Royce umbrella can cost you a good $3000 US Dollars anyways

My second car was a used 1975 VW Rabbit 2door 4 speed in "orange" (kind of dark orange) same as car in video, I think. It had brown vinyl interior with dash tray and clock. It was simple, basic, but FUN transportation. Loved the way it handled. It never gave me any trouble and I later sold it and bought a 1977 VW Scirocco in light blue. That was also super fun. Would love another but they are hard to find now.

I was a Volkswagen dealer parts man in the early 80s. We sure sold a lot of parts for these cars. A lots of parts failed prematurely. Catalytic converters, fuse blocks, window crank handles, engine fan thermal switches, radiators, etc.

It's funny because nowadays you still see a good amount of Mk1s, they still make a ton of parts for them. I think some of the parts got better over the years.

Yes! My catalytic converter was swapped out four times!! And it wouldn't start when it was hot.

The Rabbit (Golf) shared one thing in common with the Dasher (Passat) and Scirocco - all three were penned by master Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. His company, Italdesign, would later become part of the Volkswagen Group.

Why is everyone here complaining about the golf/rabbit? I have an 84 convertible currently, it's been reliable to me, runs fine, replaced the CV axles but other than that, runs like a dream, took it from Texas to Oklahoma and Illinois, I love this darn thing.

Every car company has lemmons. If yours is still running, you have a survivor or just a car someone spent money on to maintain. I have seen VWs still running at 500.000 kilomiters. Because the ownerd did the mantinence. Every car breaks parts eventually. And some cars and parts are lemmons. Parts technology also got better as time went on. And nome new manufatured part are better than the originals

@@justacentrist4147 haha, you've got a point, I'll do my best to keep it alive, maybe someday I'll resto-mod it once all the original parts give out just so my rabbit can see the next generations to come

The $/DM relationship was such at this point that they had to offer a special stripped-down Rabbit for the US market only, the Rabbit "C" was the base Golf for the rest of the world.

Odd an American commercial but the rabbit pictured in the commercial has European round headlights and not the square American ones.
@markhealey9409
@markhealey9409 7 ай бұрын
The first 5 years of Golfs/Rabbits sold in North America were imported from Germany,until they started making them for that market in Westmoreland County,Pennsylvania,with square headlights & indicators/parking lights not in the bumpers. First gen Jettas were always imported from Europe.

Come on, did anyone ever think that beating the Vega, Pinto, and Fiat was that noteworthy? The Vega was infamous for rusting in the showroom and for the self-warping engine. The Pinto was infamous for exploding in rear end collisions that the occupants would otherwise have walked away from. The Fiat was so bad that it couldn't even compete with the Vega and Pinto, much less Honda and Toyota.
@biaggiwins

your missing the point. under $3,500. they sold the rabbit to compete in the price range of these cars. it was a no brainer. sold very well.
@horseathalt7308
@horseathalt7308 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Hsu When you compared the Rabbit MK1 (Golf) with the competitors it was much better in many ways. Those you name WERE it's competitors at the time. The FIAT Strada was its direct competition and was a good car actually was a better handling and performing, but wasn't built that well so it suffered .

The Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique were worse. They fell apart before 50,000 miles, had a recall and TSB list as long as your arm, and while made from 1995-2000, by 2008, you never saw one.

I think the German-built Golfs (sold in Europe) were better than the Pennsylvania-built Rabbits. They didn't have a reputation for being so fragile.
@nlpnt
@nlpnt 2 жыл бұрын
The '76s were German-built, the PA plant didn't get going until model year 1979. If it's stock square headlights are a sure tell but the parts are interchangeable. VW had been building the same car for 30 years at this point, so they had some teething problems with the switch to the new one that was completely different.
