I found this video quite informative. I am looking for the followup on how you replace the assembly but couldn't find it. Any chance providing a link? Thank you for all your hard work providing such amazing content!

Planning on replacing rear brake pads on a 2017 Volkswagen S. It has a hill assist feature with a manual E break. Any pointers on retracting the brake caliper piston?

Hey my brake pedal seems to go down more than what it should and my car is still under warranty. Would the dealer take a look at it without charging? I checked the brake fluid and its find.

They should look at it for free.

Ho! Rear drums memory I remember when I use to do a lot of mk1 ,2,3 and remember the rear bearings were weak what I use to do is seal the cap for the bearing with silicone to prevent water to come contact with the bearing and greese the adjuster is adjusted in one of the 4 holes for the wheel bolts with these aftermarket studs you can't access them you have to remouve one of them in order to get acces use a pointy pick to lift or lower the adjuster put the pick end in the hole for the small spring I remember there was two size of drums on Golf Jetta etc 180x30 and the larger 200x40 mm and the passat TD with the AAZ engine got the monster drums wow! the 2011 jetta on some models got some drums in the back never change a set yet I've been told that they wear fast.
@HumbleMechanic10 жыл бұрын
V10PDTDI I was not really happy when they went back to drum. I have not seen any wear to the point of needing maintenance yet.

At 2:35 when you said you weren't a fan of lug nuts and studs I was like seriously WTF??? So you like having to fight with the wheel to line it up and keep it on the tiny lip of the hub and have it fall off the hub when you take the lugstuds off??? But on a serious note why do you prefer lug bolts over lug nuts. I can't really see any advantage. It's super easy to change a stud (most times anyway) and they make it so much easier to line the wheel up and start the lugnuts.
@HumbleMechanic9 жыл бұрын
+RedneckManWV99 HAHA, that is totally fair. But I see it this way. I have spend 12 years removing and installing wheels on cars with wheel bolts. Wheel studs throw off my rhythm of working. Anything that throws off my rhythm costs me time, and then money. It is just one of the weird things.
@RedneckManWV999 жыл бұрын
+HumbleMechanic Ya man I totally get what you mean, but its the exact opposite way for me lol. Thanks for replying so quickly I really appreciate it You make kickass videos that I have learned a lot from and look forward to seeing each new one as it come out. Keep up the good work. I plan on doing a Saturn TDI swap in the future like the one done here forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=193909 in order to get the same amazingly high MPG that was achieved here and wondered what are your thoughts on it. I love the Saturn S-Series so that's why I chose that car for the swap.

Episode 185. Thank you for a great video. Do you know how to adjust the parking brake on a drum set of a 2011 VW Jetta 2.5 L? I appreciate your help Thank you
@HumbleMechanic7 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's pretty easy. You will want the back wheels off the ground. Remove the little carpet and cover in the center console. Pull the parking brake level up 2 clicks Turn the adjustment screw to the point where there is a bit of drag on the wheels when trying to turn them. Release the parking brake and check it be sure there is no drag on the wheels. Pull the parking brake up and see how far up you have to pull to lock the wheels.

Hi, good informative video. Can you do one about converting VW back breaks from drum to disk? Tks.
@chriswinter57658 жыл бұрын
My rear right on 74 Super Beetle has a slight wobble in and out (not up and down) but nothing is loose. The wobble is there with the wheel OFF and I can measure ~5mm difference while rotating the drum. Likely cause?
@chriswinter57658 жыл бұрын
+Chris Winter Actually now I've watched you pull that drum apart, maybe it's just not seated 100% correctly. I ave zero vibration. Thanks for the video. Think I'll just try pulling it apart and putting it back together.

@landau39010 жыл бұрын
how do you do the brake shoe adjustment or do the self adjust
@V10PDTDI10 жыл бұрын
I like the the electric parking brake system because it doesn't freeze in the winter like cables sure the system is complex could be made simpler what I like about cables in the winter you can pull the e brake for fun or in the case of understeer it helps you make turn that other wise you would end up in the ditch. The best system would be to have a e brake handle but the callipers would close electrically sort of a hybrid e brake system so the system would not need a module just a relay or something. Crazy or not?
@HumbleMechanic10 жыл бұрын
V10PDTDI just a little crazy ;)I actually thought about converting my cabby to e-parking brake. I wanted to get rid of the handle. It is such a dorky reason too. If the handle was not there, my coffee cup would fit perfect between the seats. HAHA

Hi there i really hope someone has a solution for meand fast i really need to finish this today. I replaced my rear drum brakes they are exactly as the ones in the video. I noticed my bearings were shot too so I replaced the bearings on both sides. I am almost done with the job my issue is that I just CANT get the drum back over the brakes on the one(right) side. The other side went back on no probs but this side (came off easy enough)wont go back on. Help please I am at a loss!
@RenaxTM919 жыл бұрын
+Sean Joubert if everything is correctly set up, you may just need to push the little wedge up, and then push the shoes closer together.

The rear shoes arent well assembled.....front upper spring is not mounted in the proper hole, should be put in the 2-nd upper hole, above the upper lever that keeps the shoes apart....clearly someone has made a mess there....good video though !

Please would someone start a video from the VERY beginning of this process of removing and replacing the brake drum system?? From jack and stands safety, to removing the tire, to removing the drum to get to the internal hardware! This video along with all the others I have found is starting in the middle of the repair and that does not help me, I cannot speak for others if they get help from this! I am stuck on the drum itself because there is no way to get a brake release tool inside before the drum comes off!
@Thesaltyseafish9 жыл бұрын
+Anthony “BigTOOT” W if you need someone to show you how to remove a tire you shouldn't be touching the brakes of a vehicle.
@RenaxTM919 жыл бұрын
+Anthony «BigTOOT» W you put a small screwdriver into a bolthole and push the small wedge up, this releases the shoes a little..

There is probably no need to remove the axcel nut to remove the brake drum. By removing the nut you risk damaging the wheel bearing.
@HumbleMechanic7 жыл бұрын
+Terence Krishnasamy nope. The nut holds the bearing and drum on
