It seems pretty common that people report issues when starting the engine and the rev counter doesn’t work, or an oil pressure warning alarm sounds. I had that problem but when you rev the engine it starts up again. After taking a look around the alternator I noticed one of the wires had worked loose. Refitting that wire solved the problem for me. If you have a similar problem you might want to check all the wires are in place and that they are not broken further up the loom. Good luck!

Glad I looked for this, was gearing up to spend £160 on a new alternator! Haha.

Thanks for posting this. I have a bouncing rev counter and oil lamp coming on. Trying to find the cause of this and a few people have mentioned the alternator and or earth fault. Going to get my hands dirty and have a good look around the van 2.5 tdi 2002. BW, Al

@@agon5437 hello sir yes ive fixed it it was a 2 cable that one was cut in the alternator , u will find a hookup tachometer with 2 pins , check the cables if theyre in good condition most of the time u will find them cut by time .

Hi,the video has been uploaded for quite a while,but I have a question and hope you see this. I also have a t4 1.9TD abl,but how do you have this odometer since the factory comes with one plug to connect the odometer?

Thanks for getting in touch, this is one of my videos from before we started the T4 Family channel. Our T4 is a late model 1999 and has the digital odometer that is driven from a wheel speed sensor. Earlier models used a cable driven system and normally showed mechanical numbers for the miles/kilometres travelled. It very much depends on when your T4 was built, most models after 1999 will come with the same dashboard you see in this video. Another difference between them, the earlier models have green backlight, this model originally had blue and red backlights but we have swapped the blue lights for white.

@@T4Family Thanks for the quick reply,my t4 is 1997 and has a digital odometer,I don't have a odometer cable.Because I have odometer problems and I replaced it with one from a 1997 passat b4,but it has a mechanical odometer and mine which originally came with the van,digitally measures them,I only use an inappropriate one for fuel and temperature measurement as a temporary option

Hi there I have a problem with the Rev counter on my be crafter 2011 model, Works one day, then intermittent? Any ideas. Thanks. John.

The crafter would be using a fully electronic system, probably from a sensor connected to the ECU rather than a pulse fed from the alternator. Tracking an intermittent fault is always tricky but I would investigate if you can where that sensor might be and to check the wiring connections for breaks or water ingress. If you know someone with an ODB2 or VAGCOM reader it's worth seeing if the ECU has registered any faults.

Did you notice the squeaking sound? I've got almost the same problem. When I start the engine, I get a squeaking sound, like a belt rubbing or slipping. The engine also seems to run weak and the rev counter shows lower revs than it should be. But when I press the gas pedal to give it up some revs, the squeaking sound stops and the rev counter speeds up to the right number of rpm. I've gone to my mechanic and asked him to check the belts, and he told me that everything is tight enough and that he didn't see any slipping belt. I've also replaced/rebuilt the turbo, but the problem still persists. I've go this problem for around 4 years. It only happens when I start cold, but I couldn't find the reason. I've also checked your solution, but everything seems to be in place. Any idea what's going on? And did you try to find why you hear this squeaking sound in your van? Cheers.

Aris Gardelis yes I did work it out! It is the alternator belt. When I did this video originally the belt was worn and cracked so I replaced it and the squeak went away for a few months but then it came back. Then what I did was undo the alternator bolt at the bottom and using a long bar I levered the alternator away from the engine which tightened the belt, but don’t pull it too far. I’ve not had a problem for the last 3 months
