Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is a long-wheelbase version of the Tiguan SUV. Tiguan Allspace is 21.5 cm longer than the ordinary Tiguan, it has almost 11 cm longer wheelbase, and the boot volume is up to 760 litres, depending on whether you order a 5- or 7-seater model. Besides families with children, who may want a trendy SUV rather than a minivan, Volkswagen also believes Tiguan Allspace may appeal to young, dynamic people, who carry around surfboards, skiing equipment, etc.

Driving around Germany a couple of months ago, I observed Tiguan Allspace driving on the left lane at 200 kph. Seems like Tiguan Allspace buyers in Germany seem to buy the higher end models. Here in the USA I drive a 2019 Tiguan SE 4 Motion barely a mid level with all the cost cutting , great value.

So what's missing from the US model? And could you explain SL, SEL, etc. trim levels? I could never get a hang of those.

There are simple things like the absence of door trims on every trim level. Only the top of the range gets door trims and even then, only on the front doors. Smart LED tail lights, Discover Pro, R-Line pack (as of yet), different rim designs aren't available either. Some more differences can be found throughout the range. For example, the Golf gets a manual handbrake, no hill hold assist, no digital cockpit, no dynamic LED tail lights, no AWD...

So the base model is “S” then there is “SE”.. then “SEL” and then “SEL Premium”... S.) this model doesn’t have many features at all except for backup camera because for all model year 2018, all US Spec Cars under 10k pounds are required to have backup cameras. But the “s” trim has the 6.5” touch system. But that’s about it, and halogen lights and cloth seats.. fog lights are optional. 17” wheels. SE.) This trim has a bunch of features added.. leatherette heated seats. Discover media 8” system. Leather stitched steering wheel. Power driver seat. It also has front assist (forward collision and pedestrian warning) and blind spot warning. Panoramic sunroof and fog lights are optional. Still has halogen headlights only. 17” wheels SEL.) it has everything the SE has, but adds adaptive cruise control and NAV to the discover 8” system. Panoramic sunroof is standard. And 18” upgraded wheels come standard. Halogen lights are still the only option. SEL Premium.) This Is the only tiguan in the US that can have the digital cockpit and full LED headlights. It also adds full leather and sportier seats. And full piece door trims. Fender audio also. 19” wheels. In the US the SE is the best bang for your buck, but it’s quite sad how the only way to get digital cockpit and the cool led headlights is to get the SEL Premium. Hopefully VW will offer it on a lower trim level some time soon. The US tiguan has a 2.0t 184hp / 221 lb/tq and an 8 speed aisin auto (no DSG) Overall it’s a good car but there’s some differences between the EU model and the NA model.. first thing I noticed was the storage in the dash.. in America we have a tray (no latchable cover). And also the tiguan doesn’t have as much lighting in the trunk as the Eu model.. but otherwise they’re quite similar.

Oh. I forgot to mention. 4Motion is optional on all trim levels and comes with the select dial just like the EU model :-)

I get it. peugeot 5008 looks much better from the outside. But far as interior practicality goes Peugeot's got nothing on VW.

Exterior design and interior design( to some extent, e.g. practicality) are very subjective. In my honest opinion i would kill myself before i would sit in a VAG designed car(talking about Seat and Skoda and VW) beacuse their interiors are more or less the same boring old plastic shitboxes. On the other hand, the 5008 seems to be light years ahead, despite maybe some minor inconveniences, but for the average family it will not hinder any kind of experience. Again. Matters of opinion.

I have a 2018 Tiguan R line in Canada. We can only get the R line package on the highest trim and I'm totally happy with the car. It's all I need. Its fully loaded with all the gizmos and driving aids. That being said, I could use a few more horsepowers. It only has 184. The turbo is slightly laggy but you can get around that by keeping it in sport and manually shifting. So far I love the car. Apparently you can get it to euro hp specs once the warranty runs out.

Yeah, chip tuning is not a problem. The lag you're describing is probably an emissions thing. Older VW used to feel punchier despite less hp on paper.

Yes, and no. If the children are in child seats in the second row, sometimes adults will have to squeeze back in the third row. I know it's an emergency short trip solution, but still.

Great review Marek! I have contemplated getting a Tiguan. I would like to move to an all wheel drive vehicle and do not understand why, if you are buy a Kodiaq or Tiguan or any SUV, you would get a front wheel drive car, as so many people appear to do. I find it purpose defeating. I have looked at a number of used Tiguans, but unfortunately so many are front wheel drive. One further comment is that I feel that there is merit in looking at an estate/wagon/kombi in all wheel drive over an SUV. I find that the Passat Alltrack is really worth considering, if you want a VW of course, and particularly with its huge boot/trunk. It is just as capable as a Tiguan Allspace, but it has much more room for each of the five passengers it can carry and more for luggage. I guess the only downside, with comparison to the Allspace, is it does not take 2 extra kids in the back.

If you get stuck and need to be towed out of trouble more than twice a year, the all wheel drive versions are certainly worth a look. If you are undecided between a 200+hp and greater than 400Nm torque car, especially one that's likely to tow over 2.5 tons regularly, then get the all wheel drive version. Otherwise think carefully about just why you want 4wd and whether you can justify the extra purchase and running cost of it. You forgot that you sit much lower in a Passat than in an SUV or Crossover. You may like one or the other, but there is a big difference in most models

Brilliant, Marek. Its proportions look like a tiny Q7 from the side. I would prefer this one instead of a regular one not only for that. A bigger mass and longer base usually give you more comfort at high speed. So the longer -- the better. So it would be very interesting to compare two Tiguans side to side in a warmer times of year. The Tiguan Allspace or simply the American Tiguan since we don't get the smaller version. Looks great especially in the cockpit/interior but will it last without problems like earlier Volkswagen SUV's?

Atlas is another cookie altogether. Don't compare it it's HUGE and the engine is shit. Tiguan Allspace is virtualy the same as the Kodiaq, it all comes down to design, badge and price.

Ford Edge is a very under-rated car. I like it very much. Except I don't trust the reliability of its Powershift transmission. Perhaps my doubt about this is misplaced but in my experience the backup from Ford to its products and customers is very poor should anything go wrong.

Don't compare the XC90 to VW/Škoda, compare it to Range Rover and Q7. If you have 80k set asside for a car, go for the Q7 or the XC90 you won't regret it (well at least if Volvo fixes the engine range and adds a 6 cyl).

A Renault Grand Scenic seems much more rational, especially for the price... but then I don't think "SUVs" offer anything of real value over an MPV, and in most cases an MPV offers more space for the same footprint. But I guess it isn't "sporty". ;)

MPV's offer more space than SUV's, period, but like Marek said, if you don't need AWD you shouldn't look at SUV's. MPV's are cheaper and more spacious.

It actualy has 4x4 option with a Haldex which is NOT FOR OFF-ROAD but it's great for slippery conditions and X-DF systems makes it corner almost like a golf. Same as with the Kodiaq. Both have the same oily bits which are superior and more refined than the french ones. If you only need a MPV go for the 5008, but it's not an SUV and the small steering wheel is a pain at long drives (at least for me).

Tough one lol, if you are looking at SUV's and not MPV's. If you don't mind my 50 cents, persoanly i would say go for MPV's which have actualy usable 3rd row. Out of SUV's : Kodiaq 3rd row is bad, 5008 looks cool and is more practical, Kia Sorento is spacious in the 3rd row BUT it costs arround 50k. Alot more choice with MPV's. Would say go for Mazda CX-9 or Ford Everest but they aren't for sale here.

VW Allspace same specs as Q5: VW is still about 15k cheaper, but Audi looks better and is more refined. Kodiaq same spec as Q5 is about 25k cheaper. I personaly would never buy Q5, go for the Q7 it's just 15k more and you get ALOT BETTER CAR.
