One thing I didn't notice in first watch (and second watch with Sarah) was how Oikawa didn't just bring out the 100% in his teammates, but how he also saw the 100% in his opponents. Sarah and Adam both agreeing that tactically Kageyama shouldn't have tossed to Hinata for the last point is so interesting to me because its actually so multi-layered. The old Kageyama 100% wouldn't have tossed to Hinata because of how weak Hinata is as a player. But the new Kageyama who has learnt to trust his teamates DOES toss to Hinata because he trusts Hinata the most. It's strategically the wrong choice but symbolically the right choice to show how much he has grown as a player. Kageyama is still developing his setter identity, reconciling these two parts of himself and figuring out that balance. And Hinata is forging his own identity as well, since he knows he's the weakest but he wants to be able to be worthy of Kageyama's trust "Don't apologise for tossing to me". This dyamic is always so amazing to watch.
@VladimirMizich11 ай бұрын
You got a great point there, which is something to think about. Kageyama trusts Hinata "MOST". He trusts the others too, but he trusts Hinata most (at least at this point in the story), so he subconsciously tosses to him when he's not thinking or when he's cornered.
@minhnguyenquang991011 ай бұрын
@@VladimirMizich I have another theory. Instead of trusting Hinata most, it could be said that the toss to Hinata is his "most trusted weapon". The quick freak is the attack he have nearly 99% control and involvement. Hence, in time when he is mentally and physically exhausted, he used the strongest attack that he have the most control. This is not to downgrade the emotional aspect of the scene. I just think that at this point in the story, his relationship with Hinata has not developed enough to be a good teammate (oni and oni) but only a trusted weapon (oni and the club)
@ari_ed11 ай бұрын
I know this is off topic but this particular scene when I first saw it I thought it as illogical in somehow like why did Kageyama toss to Hinata, the MB 3 times in a row while he got Asasi or Tanaka as the OH. It just doesn't make any sense. But this year I saw VNL n l loves watching team Japan play. In a particular match of Japan vs Cuba, Sekita (Japan setter) set Nishida (Japan OPP) thrice in a row during a single rally. He did that in two rallies n for both rallies, the OPP got blocked by Cuban MB. But after the third rally, the OPP scores. Now revisiting this moment, so it does happen in real life . Even in professional volleyball scene

This episode with the Kumimi approaches just shows the emotional/mental maturity difference which is a big ongoing theme overall I think. In middle school Oikawa had almost the same mentality as Kageyama, single minded drive without the maturity to understand others around him. As much as his nonchalant cockiness can rub you the wrong way, its a much more emotionally mature approach than just internalising that anger or redirecting it to others. Side note the Oikawa fangirls who clearly knew nothing about volleyball at first applauding a good match at the end always hits me 😭

Just a little fun fact if you guys noticed, the last extra scene was animated by one of the animators of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away! the first time I saw the scene of the boys eating and crying those huge tears, I immediately got reminded of the scene in Spirited Away where Chihiro eats her rice balls while also crying, and turns out it was handled by the same person, Masahiro Anso

I imagine that excellent epilogue restaurant scene takes Sarah back to her first post-defeat meals, where you slowly process that life moves on even after devastating personal 'failures'... And just imagining Sarah quietly sit and contemplate losing, either alone or with teammates (especially with her singular other teammate for beach volleyball tournaments), brings tears to my eyes. "Success has many parents, but failure is an orphan". Considering how true that often is in life, I hope all teams and athletes who experience soul-crushing defeats have had supportive teammates, coaches, friends, and/or family during tough times of professional disappointment.

Like others have said, there are two main tournaments - the Inter-High and the Spring Tournament. The thing that may have caused some confusion is that they are NOT both qualifiers for the same Nationals tournament. The Inter-High that they just competed in is a qualifier for the Inter-High Nationals, and the Spring Tournament is a qualifier for the Spring Nationals. They are out of the running for the Nationals for this go-round, but before the school year ends, they will be able to compete in the Spring Tournament and try to qualify for those nationals as well.

There's 2 kind of "main" national tournaments in a school year, yes. The year (season) starts in April. The tournament Karasuno tried to qualify for now is Inter-High (takes place around summer), and the next one is Spring High (fall-winter); both have their own qualifiers, national stages etc., but if you do well in one of them, you can get seeded for the other. The scene with Hinata, Kageyama, and Takeda is one of the favorite scenes of the anime producer! And for the final bonus scene, apparently the author made a special healthy menu for the team :")

29:45 There are two tournaments, one in the fall one and one in the spring one. They are currently playing for the fall one which is called the Inter-High preliminary and whoever wins that goes to the Inter-High National Tournament. The spring tournament is nationals, but there can only be one representative so there is the Spring High-Miyagi Prefecture Representative Playoffs, and whoever wins then goes to nationals. For the playoff they seed you based off of how your team did in the Inter-High Tournament. I hope that makes sense. (I'm also pretty sure someone already stated it but not sure) Also I'm learning so much from this perspective, cause I've only really thought it from a show perspective and not a player perspective.

The "YOU" includes Seijoh players, or any other team/athlete, or even person out there. Everyone fails. Winning is fleeting. It's so cliche. But the way Haikyuu tells the story of failure and how to deal with failure is so beautiful and profound up until the very end of the series. Instead of feeling crushing depression, I felt hopeful; something realistic and obtainable I can carry in my daily life. There is no demon king. No one dies. Dreams change. But how you grew as a person is no fiction.

This is my first time commenting. When I was in high school, I belonged to the volleyball club and once participated in this national tournament. As others have mentioned, the national tournaments are ``Inter-High'' (held in the summer) and "Spring High School Volleyball National Tournament" (held in January of the following year),and the tournament where Hinata saw the little giant. In addition to volleyball, inter-high school matches are held at the same time as many other club activities, and third-year students retire after the national tournament or the national tournament preliminaries. The "Spring High School Volleyball National Tournament" was originally held in March, and third-year students were not allowed to participate, but since 2011, the event has been changed to January, so third-year students can now also participate. As the saying goes, this is the last chance for third-year students. In the second season, we are practicing for the national tournament qualifiers to be held in January. Sorry for the long comment. I'm looking forward to your future reactions!

Now there's bad news for the third year that would be explained in the next episode.

I will love that last scene forever. Aside from the community/team aspect of it, it’s also that rush of relief that you get when you’re eating. Kinda like when you’re so tired from work and then you come home to eat dinner. Until that moment, the boys have not yet processed their loss. The shock + the need to get up and get going (to line up and shake hands, to give way for the next players, the fact that they’re in public), they were just holding everything in. And as depicted on Hinata’s face when he took that first bite, the instant rush of relief opened them up to their emotions. So as they take in the nutrients, they’re also letting out their feelings. I love that idea of exchanging energies and filling yourself up again with what you need to move forward and persevere.

It's been a delight watching the two of you go through season 1 together! Will you be watching the ovas? I know sarah watched two of them when she reacted by herself, but there are more of them for each season and all of them are really good!

That eating scene is just everything. When everything is down, you just have to eat and get stronger.

The set choice to Hinata was explained when Iwa-chan asked Oikawa how he knew that Kageyama would go for the freak quick.

This is such a powerful episode, with all the last bits of the match but also such a sensation of the team bonding and the power duo of Takeda and Ukai watching over them and steering them in the right direction😭

Apparently, the person in charge of the meal scenes was Masashi Ando, a former Studio Ghibli animation director who worked on films such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. It's a really good scene that touches your heart.

Love how you both notice things that only pro. Players would def know about. Like why was kageyama on the left side receiving kunimis spikes?

My favorite scene of the entire season comes at the end of this episdoe with ukai talking about how they need to eat and all the players gulfing down food while letting their emotions out. You know they feel incredibly sad in this moment but they will only get stronger from here.

There are so many cool things about this episode. Cannot be a favorite one because it is a sad one, but jeez. 1- That las toss, Seijoh was full on it. Not only they had it blocked but if you notice both Oikawa and the libero were in possition to recieve the spike. So Hinata was never going to get a point from that. 2- Like Sarah noticed, this come full circle on the "winners and loosers" concept. Hinata knew winning and now he gets to know loosing. 3- The cammera angles my GOD. Not only in the last point but also after Takeda's speech, the cammera points in a way Hinata and Kageyama look GIGANTING rising above the scenario where they just lost. 4- And the restaurant scene is just the best. From a nutrition pov, from a teamwork pov, like Adam says, it is so relatable.

They're playing for the Spring Nationals now. There is still the Winter Nationals later on. Usually seniors don't play in the winter nationals if they're serious about college entrance exams.

30:19 So here's the timeline for Haikyuu!! April: School year started. Hinata and Kageyama enrolled in Karasuno May: Practice match with Nekoma June: Interhigh Preliminaries, where Karasuno just lost to Aoba Johsai July: Tokyo training camp (Season 2) August: Spring National Tournament Miyagi Prefecture Qualifying Rounds Top 8 teams from Interhigh Prelims are exempted from these Rounds. Top 16 teams (the 8 teams that lost, including Karasuno) get a bye in the first round. 48 teams play in the first round, with 24 teams advancing, joined by the 8 teams that got a bye in the first round. They play 2 more games until 8 teams remain, joining the top 8 teams in the Qualifiers, making it 16 teams. August: Interhigh Tournament takes place at the same time, where Shiratorizawa is playing. There is no conflict since Shiratorizawa are among the top 8 teams that skip the Qualifying Rounds. Oct. 25-27: Miyagi Prefecture Spring Tournament Qualifiers. They play 4 rounds until 1 team remain to qualify for Spring National Tournament. January 5-10: Spring National Tournament.

Watching this with you guys is my 4th watch-through and even though I don’t shed tears easily that eating scene at the end hits really damn hard

I like to watch your reactions. Inter-high school competition is in summer, spring Tournament qualifiers begin in October and the main tournament is in January, college entrance exams are from January to March. In Japan, graduation is in March and entrance is in April. It is just the season of sakura blossoms. so Japanese people associate sakura with encounters and partings.

YESSSSS finally, I was so excited to see Adam's reaction to this episode! It's not that there are 2 ways to qualify for nationals, it's that there are 2 nationals every year ^^ however, as far as I remember in the show, teams that were in high tops in the first qualifier have to play less matches in the second one

In Haikyuu, there’s 2 national tournaments: IH (Inter High) and HQ (Haru-Ko) IH: Japan school years starts in April, and high schools only have less than a month to build up a team to start the preliminary matches. And as Sarah explained earlier, you have to win in preliminary to go to the actual national tournaments. Every team only have probably around 2 months to build up their team before preliminary starts. And due to this reason, usually IH you see mainly third years playing and first years probably still learning to get along with the whole team. Karasuno is being special here to have 3 first years at starting position. If you win in preliminaries, then of course you still have nationals to play in later months. But if you lose, then it’s time for third years to quit clubs and focus on their academics (need to prepare for college exams) HQ: (aka Spring Tournament) Haru = Spring Ko = High school The preliminary for each province is a but different, but definitely after summer break. The national starts in January (after New Year and before the college exams in February) This was original held in Spring, but since students had to prepare for exams and future, it’s moved to each January instead.

Just to add, while both “Inter-High” & “Spring Tournament (Haruko)” are the 2 biggest tournaments for high school VB, Haruko is organized at a larger scale (i.e., venue, media coverage, attendance numbers). Possibly due to Haruko being the last tournament for high school seniors. A handful of great Japanese players won Haruko and became MVP (e.g., Yuki Ishikawa, Ran Takahashi, Sarina Koga, Mayu Ishikawa etc.) Highly recommend you to check out those real life Haruko tournaments 🤍

This one is for the inter-high tournament and the other is for the spring tournament. Two different tournaments in one year school calendar

I just noticed that Kageyama was receiving on the left too. But yes good point that they were receiving. I think maybe because that was Kageyama's current position in the rotation and it was a chance ball for Seijo due to Oikawa's serve. So minus the anime dialogue, they didn't have time to switch positions to get ready for the attack. And then Seijo had another chance ball via Kunumi's attack and still retained that position. Just an observation. Hehe

I really wish that Takeda-sensei goes in your houses or Even one of them. He is the reason why the team got a chance, he is just a literature sensei that doesn't have to pester Ukai or Nekomata? Couch of Nekoma, Even learn about volleyball. But he does it, and is suportive, wise and headstrong... I think he deserve being in the house because he does all that for his sincere love to his students. And sorry for put pressure in You, I know You have the right to include the character you like and every decisions you make are right because we all are free to make them.

Thank you for the new video as always, Sarah and Adam! I haven't slept so much and watching this regained my energy to go through the day. Sarah, as of this episode, there's a new Haikyuu movie (sequel of Season 4) premiering in Japan today! I hope you'll get to watch it soon once the movie arrives internationally! P.S About the nationals, there are two national tournaments annually in HS Volleyball there: Inter-high and Spring Tournament. Inter-high Nationals: Around summer Spring Nationals: Around January You're watching the Inter-high qualifying tournament at the moment and they lost at their 3rd round. Whoever wins the qualifying tournament gets to be the representative team for their prefecture (Miyagi in this case).
