You two are both pretty spot on about Ushijima's line about unfound confidence, but just to add to that: Remember that Ushijima was pumped up about Hinata challenging him back in S2E1. During that whole interaction, Ushijima was sizing them up, and they passed every one of his metrics. He was impressed! He was looking forward to a great match. And then this first set happens, and Hinata barely plays at all, and sucks pretty badly when he _is_ in. What a letdown.

This was exactly what happened with Kageyama in the very first episode. He was like you have the raw skills needed to be good why didn't you polish them, why are you still at this level, what HAVE you been doing!? What Kageyama said in ep 1 is what Ushijima was probably thinking. Until High school, Hinata has simply never had the chance to be exposed to the kind of training the others have received. Mostly for narrative purposes, because it really shouldn't have been that hard for Hinata to be able to find other people to play with like Mad Dog had done, if he really wanted to get good.

I really appreciate that you guys have a keen insight into Ushijima's personality and intentions! Most people would just quickly and automatically put him in the "arrogant prick" box and leave him there without genuinely thinking about how Hinata's actions look to someone as experienced and skilled as he is. I also like that you acknowledged that Hinata isn't quite there yet, and honestly, I'm proud to say that, in general, the Haikyuu fandom would agree with you there. It's just simply facts! Yes, he's the protagonist, and yes, we're seeing this story through his point of view, but I think it's good to acknowledge that, as of now, he's not that good yet, but he has a lot of potential and room to grow. That makes Haikyuu so exciting to watch - seeing how they all grow and achieve their maximum potential!

Translation correction: At 15:00 The translation of Tsukishima's brother's dialogue is inaccurate. What he actually means is that Tsukishima is "so calm that it's almost disappointing" - in Japanese, "がっかりするほど冷静です" (Gakkari suru hodo reisei desu). This nuance suggests that Tsukishima's calm, composed demeanor feels unsettling, conveying a sense of disappointment or frustration due to his lack of passion or intensity. This ties into Yachi's earlier remark about how difficult it is to block a left-handed player after getting used to right-handed ones. Tsukishima's brother clarifies that Tsukki isn't the type of player who relies on instincts, intuition, or what he's used to, but rather on what he observes unfolding on the court.

Hinata's confidence is very much unearned; that's what makes him so frustrating / inspirational. You cringe at him because he's so arrogant; yet you root for him because he's so greedy and never gives up. Hinata would never have gotten a single opportunity to play without his unearned confidence. He wasn't privileged with a childhood that guaranteed him access to a volleyball club. He was born incredibly short. He doesn't have any volleyball mentors or even connections (like an older brother) to lean on. It's implied that he's relatively poorer than even his classmates, since he lives on top of a mountain and bikes up and down a major highway for an HOUR just for the chance to play. This is not to say that Ushijima or Kageyama aren't right to judge him because his volleyball fundamentals suck! They absolutely do. People like them have been training diligently their whole lives, and then this inexperienced upstart CHALLENGES them? Ofc they're going to bristle at the arrogance. The nerve. And they'd be correct! I've always found it interesting that non-athletes tend to empathise with Shoyo more; but athletes tend to side with Kageyama or Ushijima's assessment of Hinata. That's because Hinata is the underdog we WANT to root for. And his cockiness and refusal to give up makes him inspirational. But from an athlete's POV, we know that yes, life can be unfair, but it doesn't mater. In the end Hinata's worth is only what he can prove on the court...and he isn't there yet. He's just cocky without the skill to prove it. This balancing act of being inspired / embarassed at Hinata's arrogance, greed, and unearned confidence continues throughout his entire arc, and that what makes him so dynamic as a character.

Soooo….. this isn’t really a spoiler. Shiratorizawa does pretty good at nationals. Over the last three years, they have represented Miyagi on the national stage. Usually placing top 4, or top 8. Been Ushijima a constant member of the U19 Youth Team, which made him a top 3, and top 5 ace alongside Bokuto, and a few other players you will get to know soon, alongside their schools. Alongside Kanto/Tokyo Region, Miyagi is one of the “powerhouses” that stay on the top. Eventually, we could talk over THE Seeded teams, which Shiratorizawa tends to be a part of when it comes to the national competition. This time though, they weren’t as prolific as other years, such as the Inter High competition where they managed to represent Miyagi, but fell to other teams, who we may see soon, and some who haven’t been animated yet!
@ChessHistorian2 ай бұрын
MINOR SPOILERS IF YOU CONSIDER HISTORICAL DATA SPOILERS: Ushijima's ranking is as follows: Miyagi Prefecture: he's the number 1 ace Japan: he's the 3rd best ace. As for his team's ranking, the anime never explicitly says, and I don't know if the manga ever says. But I'd wager that we're supposed to infer that Shiratorizawa is among the top 10 high school teams in japan, but that they're not expected to reach National Finals...
@innocentg36742 ай бұрын
This is a bit of a misconception. We are never actually made aware of any order of ranking between them. All we know is that Ushijima, Kiryu and Sakusa are top 3, and that Bokuto and the other guy are both described as being "just outside of the top 3" or "top 5". Also, according to Tanaka, Shiratorizawa has ranked among the top 8 in Japan for several years. Meaning they at least make it to the Quaterfinals of Nationals regularly

Great reactions as always! I understand why Hinata had a cocky attitude towards Ushijima at Shiratorizawa High. Ushijima said that the players at Seijoh are weak, except for Oikawa, and I could see that Hinata was upset about it. I also know that Ushijima is a good guy, just very straightforward; however, he does come across as quite proud since he’s not very talkative. On the other hand, Hinata kept telling Kageyama repeatedly that Ushiwaka is awesome, but Ushiwaka doesn’t know it. I bet this is common among boys at that age.

If you ask me, this season has very good pacing. In fact, I do not have any evidence for this but I believe episodes are structured in pairs. So first two episodes are "introductions". Ep 1 we got all the context of the match, the literal presentations for each team member, and here we are going to be introduced to the MAIN conflict: Ushijima's power (and the fact that he is left handed), and of course Tendo now makes HIS OWN introduction. We are also introduced to something else, but I will mention it after epiosde 4.

8:27 I had to deal with one or two setters that ONLY feeds the tall guy, even when they lose points, had to bitch at him after getting no sets at all in 2 games. Setters like that will only ruin the team dynamic. AND that was a drop in match, not a league or a tournament. Best setters I've played with will use the ACE to boost the team's confidence and then feed some sets to all other attackers, in the first game, to get them into rhythm. First game is essentially the setters CALIBRATING the team offence.

the quote "that's how you get hurt, when you do anything halfway" I longboard to/from work - and i've taken pretty nasty falls going super fast, but I only ever got hurt to where i couldn't ride anymore hen i was going -2 mph and hit a curbcut/crack lmao

For real, to much time to think (going half way) always leads to injuries. Has happened a bunch to me snowboarding.

I also agree with the confidente with no basis Like they are from a team that lost to a team that you constantly defeat, and Hinata is like I am going to take You down like lmao boy

Just wanna add that Hinata said what he said to Ushijima for the sake of Seijoh as well.. (like what Sarah said about infertile soil..) Although what Ushijima said is a matter of fact, Hinata still felt offended because he knows how good Seijoh is, and maybe respect them even more after second match and he won't back down after hearing that. I don't think no one's really at fault, just the fact that each person has their own reason for doing it and we definitely enjoy their banter 😁. Adam's going 🥰 at Tsukki like a proud father.. Tsukki won't change overnight. He still makes excuse (or maybe just a matter of fact) like "I can't win against ushijima" to protect himself but we know deep down he has still fighting spirit and try to change that as well.. you're definitely gonna enjoy next episode!
