Otsuka and Ran knew each other since they were in their early teens through local youth games. Otsuka went to Rakunan High in Kyoto and Ran went to Higashiyama High also in Kyoto in the following year. The two big volleyball rival schools fought the legendary 41-39 score set when Otsuka was in the 11th grade and Ran was in the 10th. Otsuka and Ran both became the national high school champion, in 2018 and 2019 respectively. They also fought against each other in the college league. They are good friends and they respect each other, though. They are nicknamed “Tatsu Ran” as a duo.

@@faaw3025yes based on physical attributes Japan is very much still the underdog. Their attackers except for Kai are all below 2 meters tall. Their setter Sekita is the 2nd shortest in the league and is often taken advantage of by opponents when he is playing front row. Their MBs are about as tall as the OH/OP of many teams (think michialetto, lavia, romano, patry, faure, tillie, mozic, nimir, marr, swarcz, anderson, etc - are all 2m above) and are a lot skinnier than MBs of other teams (i mean just look at them compared to le goff or kozamernik or holt). Just basing on these stats no one would expect japan to qualify for any major tournament, let alone win in one. But here they are, proving every naysayer wrong. Thats why i love them! Amazing how Japan's blocking, which used to be nonexistent, has become good enough where they aren't bombarded by fast spikes and they can make use of their floor defense to convert into cleaner passes for good sets.
