FYI, the SS454 Monte was available in both the 1970 and 1971 model years (being dropped for 72), with slight visual cue changes into 71, one of which was adding a very slightly more muscular looking blacked-out tail trim piece that included an SS454 emblem on the right in addition to the Monte Carlo script logo (the featured car is correct in not having a tail trim piece, and only has the Monte Carlo Script logo on the right side). The SS454 was only available as an automatic, though a 4-speed could be ordered in 70/71 on any other Monte, with most engines up to and including the the 402 (previously known as the 396 prior to 70) big block. The 70 and 71 brochures show the power team combos available, with the 454 only available in the SS454 package, and the 4 speed available elsewhere but not in the SS package. This is a pretty well established fact, despite the fever-dream of some who will point out the rather cryptic box you can check off for a 'heavy duty clutch' on the back of the 70/71 brochure when ordering your SS454. The 72 brochure, in addition to the dropping of the SS454 option, includes the line 'Sorry, no four on the floor, Monte Carlo is not that kind of car', though you could now order an increasingly anemic 454 across the model range (to be carried over into the 1973 Gen 2 Montes, in ever-decreasingly powerful, yet still fuel hungry versions, before finally going extinct after model year 75). The 70-72 Monte and Grand Prix chassis were not based on the 4-door intermediate chassis, but rather an 'A-special' chassis specific to those models that lengthened things from the firewall forward. One other SS454 package-specific item I don't recall being mentioned in the video is the pneumatic air-ride suspension system, that included an air compressor under the hood, mounted on one of the inner fender wells. My first car in 1988 was a 72 Monte I bought from my older brother, who'd converted it a few years earlier to a (non-factory correct, but easily drop-in part capable)) 4-speed with a hopped up 350. That was a very fun car to drive!
@danjanes8689Ай бұрын
Good reply. Just note that the '71 SS had an SS emblem, not a SS454 emblem, where the non-SS cars had the "By Chevrolet" script.

The Monte Carlo was Chevy's answer to the Pontiac Grand Prix. The car took a couple of years to catch on, and it became a decent seller for Chevy. It did not ride as heavy as the GP. It seemed that it was tough to get these cars from the factory, as Chevy had so many products, including the pickups and Blazer. I know this because I sold these, back in the day.

I believe you could get a Monte Carlo SS 454 in 1971, too. The 15x7 rallye wheels were available on the Monte. I know, because my dad put Ansen 5 slot mags on my mom’s new 1969 Impala fastback, then a buddy of his bought a new 1970 Monte Carlo with the rallyes. He wanted the Ansens, so they swapped. Those rallyes looked really sharp on the ‘69 Impala.

Awesome Monte! I had a 70 I bought in 1983 when in high school. I took out the original 350 ( I know I didn't know any better at the time) and put in a massaged up 454 and a turbo 400 transmission in an effort to duplicate this exact model and then sold it (I know I didn't know any better at the time) for a fraction of what it was worth a few short years later.

The Monte Carlo was not built on the 4 door Chevelle chassis. They are not the same as a GP, either. Montes have a Monte specific frame that fits no other cars. The wheelbase measurement being the same as another vehicle doesn't make the chassis/frame the same. Montes were called A body "special" by Chevrolet.
