Voltron Legendary Defender Review

I just finished the new Netflix original series Voltron Legendary Defender. Not a whole lot of people have talked about it yet so here is my take. Check it out.

Netflix didn't create Voltron DreamWorks did. DreamWorks contracted the team that is making Voltron not netflix. Netflix is purely the platform they are using to put their tv content on.

I agree with most things, except Lance and Keith are vastly different characters. I do hope we get more back story on these two characters though, especially Keith because we still know little to nothing about his background.

I found this reboot to be a very enjoyable average - 7/10, wearing my nostalgia goggles. I have my issues with some aspects (that background music for instance did nothing for me), was impressed by others (kept the spirit of the original while building a solid identity of its own), but nothing blew me away nor really disappointed me. That's all moot I guess, since I wait with baited breath for the announcement of season two. No better sign of a success than that.

well i think it's okay for allura and coran's design to be a bit more fantasy-ish, cause they are over thousands of years old, so they have that old time feeling that none of the other characters have

while your review was fine I may want to add some things, if you don't mind of course: while you were listing off the shows you may have wanted to add that Lance and Finn from Adventure Time share the same voice actor (seriously though, without even looking it up I could pick it perfectly) though similar to each other Lance and Keith aren't necessarily the same, instead they seem to represent two sides of the same coin; with keith being the hot headed socially inept loner and Lance being the occasional voice of reason (with hunk of course) with an almost 'go with the flow and have a good time' attitude (their dynamics reminded me quite a bit of Zuko and Sokka) and as a side note, maybe it was just me but the first time I saw the lions I almost had to force myself to keep watching (the style of the robots tend not to work well with anything that's not CG and the models look like an early 2000's anime car model.) luckly after the initial disdain I do admit the lions did grow on me a bit and I fell in love with the show. Can't wait for more episodes!

SPOILER ALERT also I figured out the "major plot twist" within the first episode, though it was more of a suspicion at the time, though I suppose that could come from my experience with dealing with traps in anime. IDK whenever a character is designed that and acts like that red flags are immediately raised and between being distracted by Finn and questioning who they were (the picture honestly gave it away though it doesn't really click until you see the brother)

I had Pidge figured out after the Second Episode... Nothing New Under The Sun. Too early to Grant her the "Most Interesting Character" mantle yet... That Title may have a Serious Contender in the Original Black Paladin..... 8^)

I think the reason Lance and Keith seen interchangeable is because they have the same hot head show off base personalities and when the team splits up they're almost always paired together, while Shiro, Pidge, and Hunk seem very comfortable on their own or working in a group. However, there are some major differences in motivation that the show plays off suprisingly subtle in the rare times Lance and Keith are apart. With Keith, what you see is what you get. He's passionate about a lot of things and doesn't understand why others aren't equally as passionate. But this often means he'll fall for traps and he doesn't really think through situations. Lance on the other hand is much more complicated. With his brash and passionate personality, you'd think he'd love being in voltron and showing off his skills, but really he genuinely laments not being home with his family. In the Balmera fight episode, whenever Keith wanted to jump headlong into a situation it was generally Lance who pulled him back and thought of something clever. His devil may care lady killer attitude often falls flat because it's more something he poorly tries to project rather than something he believes he is. He's a walking contradiction. Lance and Keith are intertwined with each other. They were tied together as rivals even before the series start, and since are almost always visually together on screen. They work as mirrors and foils of each other at the same time. I have not doubt their story arcs will be equally as intertwined in the next season. Heck, given who's the creative team, I would understand if they were actually made into a couple (although I'm not holding my breath either. There's still some limitations to the demographic they're working with). I know Lance and Keith are the last popular characters, but to be honest they're what I watch this series for. I think they have the most potential.

I felt the exact same way about Lance and Keith! It was kind of disappointing, especially because they have the potential to be such interesting characters. However, I have to disagree with you about King Alfor's death. I had honestly forgotten about him, and I think the writers did, too. My thoughts on his death were 'Oh no, this character I know almost nothing about and has gotten less ten minutes of screen time is dying! I care because... reasons!' It sort of felt shoe-horned in. But that's just my opinion.

Don't know if you know but Netflix did not green light this show. This was a product of a deal between dreamworks and studio mir (the animation studio that did Korra) Netflix jumped on the bandwagon later.

I have phrased that wrong, I meant "edgy immaturity". sorry, I am not a native speaker. By saying that the show had angsty immaturity, I meant to say that Korra was in general less open to teachings than Aang, but more "badass", that the problems of morals and ethics were shoved to the background while the show focused on puching things. We were shown scenes of death and at one instance even torture. That's not mature, that's just edgy. We were introduced to the conflict between benders and non benders, but we never really focused on that issue? We never really saw Korra trying to make this right, instead of that she was just punching the people who make a ruse and maintaining status quo. Amon was a bender with a hidden plot, but all the people who followed him? They genuinely felt oppressed and we just skipped right past that. Punching was more important. We see earth kingdom in an awful state, but its not so that Korra can address this issue somehow, it's so that we don't feel sorry when Zahir kills the queen. That's the only reason. Instead of having Korra grow as a person, grow spiritually we see her grow after being physically tortured. Again, that's not mature, in the same way that Elfen Lied isn't mature with it's buckets of blood and animal cruelty.

+Pawel Dziedzic Yeah, and Korra developed as well. It far more ways than Zuko, but she was no where near as angst as him. The show hardly pushed morals and ethics into the background. They were a centre piece of Legend of Korra. Don't know where you get this from Also, Aang had to solve plenty of problems through punching, but I suppose you;ll just bring up the thing with Ozai as though it would negate this, but this is no different than when Korra managed to stop Kuvira by sympathising with her

I grew up with the original Voltron. Dreamworks Voltron is a disgrace. The DW Voltron Coran is so over the top, he is portrayed as stupid. The original series Coran was proper as a royal server should behave. Also change Padgett into a girl? Because the princess is not flying the blue lion? The adaption from Golion to Voltron was a lot better story arch then this new one.Even Voltron the third dimension was better than this new one. Dreamworld is making a sham of Voltron and what it stood for in the past.

Nah. You're not alone. Korra tries to be something it isn't. It tries to be dark, or complicated, then it remembers it's a kids show and it falls really short of the concepts it's aiming at. The result ends up being really construed - and makes you wish they hadn't even tried to attack those concepts instead of doing it half-way and so poorly. The simple yet profound essence of the original series is completely lost. The humor in Last Airbender was also a lot more up my alley. Korra had too much teen angst.

+sildeezy Uh, not really. It's pretty successful when its dark and complicated, like when Zaheer kills the Earth Queen or when Amon is giving his speeches. None of the concepts are done half way or poorly. Saying this because its a kids show is a pretty lame excuse, almost as lame as this persons excuse of not wanting to watch Voltron. Hell the fact that does such deep matter so well for a kids show just means it deserves more credit, which it got plenty of. And most of the comparisons that people make between Korra and the Last Airbender are pretty superficla and baseless half the time
